Fountain pen collector here, here's some insight for the pen you got: - That pen is a Mabie Todd & Bard (& Bard was dropped around 1908) Swan which was one of their highest tier pens. The pen you have is probably newer than you think - - early 1900s by the looks of things, but still old - The reason it's blotting around 3:20 is probably due to the heat from your hand warming up the ink inside the barrel. It's also probably a good idea to be writing on a slope so ink doesn't pour straight out. Also, feeds (the thingy under the nib) weren't sufficient enough yet to control ink flow. - The pen is made of black hard rubber - - I'd advise against submerging in water as that will oxidize the exterior to an brown/olive color - The pen you have is meant for general writing at the time, not calligraphy. Calligraphy nibs are often more flexible (depending on what script you are writing) so don't feel too bad about not doing the pen justice - That internal spring is meant to regulate ink flow under the nib, not exert pressure to the feed I'm glad you resonate with the history of the pen as that's how I got into vintage pens as well! They are a pain to deal with sometimes - - eyedropper fillers in particular. Have fun!

That illustration does feel very classic and almost rustic, like a relic of a bygone age, just like the pen. The pen almost seems to translate its character directly onto the page in which it is used upon; it is simply a wonder.

Well, fountain pens are tricky. Different brands of ink have different flow and you might need different inks OR adjust the nib to compensate overflow or underflow. Alsothat is a very soft flex gold nib, one needs to learn to use very little pressure with it.

The age of the objects we use is quite fascinating! It's such a gorgeous pen, I own and use a typewriter from the same era, 1895 (I am a professional typewriter repair tech). As I consider that, I'd love to see you attempt to use a typewriter to create art by using the printed letters, the can be layered and the strength of the impression can be controlled with the key press, not easy, but it could end up being cool!

Oh Jazza. I love how excited you get at the age of that pen and the things it would've seen. I really get what you mean. I collect old books (my oldest one having been printed in 1656) and it's always fascinating to think about all the people who owned an old book through the centuries. Everything people had no idea about when this book was printed. Everything people invented after someone bought a new book in 1656. Think about it. That book was already over 230 years old when your pen was manufactured. It was already an antique book when someone bought themselves a new pen which found its way to you 130 years later. And I also own a single page of a book from 1560, another ~100 years older than my oldest book. Things like these are just fascinating. Old books, coins, just everyday object.

Can you imagine showing people from the 1890s minus the phone this piece? I think its so co to think how they'd even approach the style it was drawn. How they'd perceive it 😮 Such a cool episode

Love foundation pens!!! So cool to have that piece of history. Funny to watch you try to fix an eye dropper pen. Those overfeed like the dickens if you're not careful 😄 under filling is a problem with them as your hand warms up the air and the air in the pen expands. And my goodness that's a wet pen.

Ha! Yeah, I am 100% positive that wire bit is not original. It was added by a previous owner who dropped the thing, damaging the way the feed and nib fit together. Your troubleshooting process probably exactly mirrors what somebody in like 1932 went through to arrive at the wire solution in the first place. You have PARTICIPATED in the history of this instrument! Also, as a bit of a connoisseur, I love the way that thing writes. Very nice flexible nib. ETA: I know exactly what you mean about technically being ABLE to do all the same things with a modern instrument, but something about THIS one makes holding it a special occasion. My neighbor as a kid was a fascinating and brilliant old man who mostly kept to himself, but it came out eventually that he had worked at Los Alamos on the atom bomb. In a minor role - I think he checked other people's math - but still. He gave me a mechanical pencil and slide rule that he used, however obliquely, to contribute to the dawning of the nuclear age. Holding something old in that way is a profound experience.

I grew up in a house that was built in 1890, so I think about the events it's been around for and the changes that have happened in and around it a lot.

I actually love fountain pens they feel much better and personally create a better writing experience over ball point and roller ball pens. What I would recommend is buying a Jin Hao 750 on amazon and buy some flex dip pen bibs and you can create a flex pen in order to learn calligraphy

The quick brown fox sentence is used to test every letter of the alphabet. Therefore it is "jumps" not "jumped", otherwise there wouldn't be an 's' in there. Not that it mattered in this case. EDIT: Nvm - I just noticed that Jazza did use "jumps" after ~8:40
