Hello everyone - it's time for an in depth look at Jupiter, my Dennis RS 130. We have an idea of what has been causing all it's issues, and now I've got a plan of action.
Can my team and I restore her to life, or will she remain a novelty paperweight?
A video featuring:
Lawrie - Optimistic owner of a Large Red Paperweight & Presenter

As a child i used to live about 400 yds down the road from a fire station I used to peer in the doors on the way to school and always anticipated the appliances leaving the station! In fact I used to have an invisible friend that lived in the station! I cannot remember the exact type of appliances they kept but my father said they had Rolls Royce Engines in them, they used to shoot out flame from a side exhaust whilst ringing a real bell, to me this was the ultimate. They looked a bit like a more like a modern Green Goddess. Always wanted a fire engine of my own and I am still waiting to afford one! Thing is I need the space to put it but I suppose there is the drive after all.

Nice one Lawrie, I love those particular Dennis appliances and it's nice to see it's working now, cannot wait to hear that beast of an engine chugging with the glorious sound of the two tones and seeing the lights flashing just like in her glory days. I used to volunteer for a first aid charity and we had a rather beaten up Vauxhall Frontera 4x4 ambulance that I adored, whenever I was asked which vehicle I would like to use on the event I always said "Frontera" I broke down in it several times but I still adored it and I do wish I'd of brought it off them when I left to restore to former glory and exhibit at shows etc but I never got round to it my loss on that one. Sorry for long winded comment, keep up the good work and I shall look forward to future videos.

Thank you, I'm overjoyed to have the thing working again. I love the thing so much, and it makes such a glorious noise. Oh that sounds cool - some people don't understand that a machine doesn't have to be perfect to fall head over tails with it. It's one of the reasons why I have so many vehicles - I'd rather keep them safe so at least they're around, and so someone could come along in the future and sort them, even if I don't. No worries for the long comment, just takes me a bit longer to read and respond to it all - I'm very intrested to know peoples similar vehicle stories! We'll try to keep up the good work, got a little team of people to help now, so hopefully things will keep progressing.

What year was this particular truck of yours built? I remember when I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria in the mid 1970s that the Federal Nigerian Fire Service fire station behind our house had a non-running, disaffected and parked late ‘40s or 1950’s vintage Merryweather Marquis pump-escape with the original fire escape ladder mounted on artillery wheels still mounted on the rear of the truck. I was fascinated by that old vehicle with its fading red paint and neat London bus appearance. It never moved the whole time we were there, almost three years. It is apparently not there anymore, as it does not show up in the Google Earth street view of the now fairly dilapidated station. The runners they had back at that time were some Bedford TK based vehicles. Those are all gone now too apparently, and they must have been retired back in the eighties to be replaced with Brazilian or locally built Mercedes Benz L911 series vehicles.

Well done, that's going to be a major burden off your bank account with it being the cheap(er-ish) compressor head and not engine woes. As well as the lights you noticed being out it looks like some of the little corner lights in the rear clusters that come one with the taillights, or as taillights might be out too, though that's less significant than the headlight or reversing lights as it looks like three of them on each side are still working. The bus preservationists can probably tell you where to find the rear bulbs for Jupiter, and maybe the dodgy Dodge, as a lot of buses from the '70s and into the '80s, and some coaches too, used those taillight units. Finding a replacement compressor head, or having the old one from Jupiter rebuilt, if that's possible, as a surprising amount can be achieved by specialist welding processes on specialist parts. Probably the guiding factor will be how easy it is to find the necessary parts as that often effects how expensive they are...
@lmm
@lmm 5 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, thanks I'll add that to the list to be sorted too. Yeah, it's certainly cheaper than trying to find a new one - and the dodge isn't going anywhere for some time. I bought the last of stock at my local place of headlights, so I have one spare to go in For the rear I've not a clue. The rears work I think - I'm sure it's the switch as it engages reverse. It's most likely a crack in the casting. I'll send it away to be tested and see if it's an easy fix or not. Failing that try and find an alternative I suppose?
@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 5 жыл бұрын
@@lmm Yes, having the compressor head repaired, if possible, will be a good option, both in price and because you know that before the crack developed it worked well so there aren't any issues with warping or corrosion in the cooling passages. As you say the Dodge won't be going anywhere for a while, so if the current unit can't be repaired it gives you time to source a used item, though that could be potentially troublesome due to the unknown condition, a used part could turn out to be one that has been removed from a vehicle due to faults rather than one that's come off an operating vehicle that has been broken for parts due to lack of interest or unsuitability for further use. What I meant about the rear lights is that they have four small bulbs, one in each corner of the light cluster which, I think, act as clearance lights, the red marker lights that show the width of the vehicle at night, which come on with the rear lights and it looked like one or two in each rear light were out, though it could be that they were just being hidden from the camera by the shape of the back with it being a fire engine...
@lmm
@lmm 5 жыл бұрын
This is of course the problem with buying second hand used parts. We'll find out when it goes away I suppose. Not rush though. Yeah, I know the lights you mean, I'll have a look when I'm next going up into the shed. Thanks!
@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 5 жыл бұрын
@@lmm Yes, very much so, especially on so critical a part as a compressor head where there are a lot of potential possible faults/failures. As you say, though, no rush. A bit of research may reveal a more commonly available part that will fit if the existing part gets the thumbs down. No problems with the lights, I could be wrong but it's not uncommon to see some of those out on vehicles that use those light units. I suppose technically only the outermost ones need to work to meet legal requirements though I'm sure the MoT regulations state that if a vehicle is fitted with certain types of light, even if they weren't a legal requirement at the time of manufacture, they must work if they are testable items...
@lmm
@lmm 5 жыл бұрын
It might just be a simple weld job - depends where it's broken I suppose. I suppose once it's been pressure tested we can work out the next step. Then research everything 😂 I'll have a look at the cluster - likely a connection more than anything else 😂

I liaise to the fear after a repair.... as very moderate hobby mechanic when you repair a car and go out for the first time you know that if something fails it is your own fault. Specific if you have worked on brakes and other items which give you security. An other thing indeed is you always feel the "working against you" although lately I have to say even if I have been swearing on my Unimog a lot I am now working on a Range Rover P38 which learns me that it can even be worse and now looking back I have forgiven the Unimog in struggling back at me as mechanical items are difficult to solve but afterwards easy to explain where computer electronics..... grrrrrr.
@lmm
@lmm 5 жыл бұрын
I've thought it's been fixed so many times too, for it to just fail again. It's such a massive pain if it does fail too - not like a car you can roll out of the way if it stops. And yes - that sensation of "do you actually want to be fixed?" Please make it a little easier. Are you winning with the unimog? I tend to hate anything electrical because it makes it all so much more complex. Good luck!!
@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 5 жыл бұрын
Jan-Pieter Gerritsen Yes, the P38 Range-Rover is deservedly rather renowned as more than a bit of an electrical/electronic disaster area. The good news is that, as you seem to have more than acceptable English, there is a lot of help out there. Pretty much every electrical/electronic gremlin with them is well-known and well-recorded and there is quite an industry around supplying rebuilt and upgraded replacements for the common failure parts, or having your own parts rebuilt and upgraded. It can be a long and tedious process making one electrically reliable but it's worth it in the end, the P38 is a remarkably comfortable vehicle to drive and, on the original air suspension, they handle a hell of a lot better than anyone would ever expect for such a big and heavy off-roader, though they do like a drink, even the diesel isn't exactly economical or fast...

@@lmm I got my "Mog" as an almost driver used in "De Zwarte Cross" there is some KZfaq footage of it. It took me many MOT failures to get it rough but when it finally got trough MOT it felt (almost) like -- BEEP ---. I used to love driving the Dennis RS130. It handled like dream but I wasn't a fan of the auto gearbox after driving the manual Forfeit replaced. If you let the gearbox do it's think it used and you approached a corner in a lower gear when you lifted your foot off the accelerator pedal the damned gearbox changed up a year causing you to brake hard going into the corner. Under normal driving conditions that wouldn't happen but being a fire appliance driving a little more aggressively on blues and twos it always happened. Dennis claimed it had a 'modulated lock-up' to prevent that happening but no-one told the gearbox. We, as drivers, always changed gears manually due to that problem. Otherwise it was a fine machine if subject to a bit of rusting of the cab floor. As for the Dodges they were horrible appliances. Cabs were too small, they didn't handle at well either.

Jupiter came about because she's big and red, it just seemed like the right name. Guess it makes sense. Based on the dates of construction, that makes mine Jupiter the second?

you only have to cover the blue lights if taking it abroad, you can have them uncovered if in the UK. You cant have them on while on the road, but you can on private land.
