My 2018 GTL made the same noise. My dealer had it in and were told by BMW to check the alternator drive gear area. All was found to be ok there so BMW told them to fit a new engine. I wasn’t too happy about that as the bike was virtually new. Cudos to the dealership though as they replaced the bike with another new 2019 model. I think BMW are aware of this issue. Mine was doing exactly the same as yours. Sounded like valve train to me as it seemed to be about half that of engine speed. Some people on K1600 forums reckon it’s the primary gear from the crankshaft. Let us know if you ever find the source. Greetings from the UK.

It's engine rpm dependent. Driveshaft would be constant. Watch the video again where you shift back and forth. On my bike the sound is on the right, not the left.

That sound reminds me of the catalytic converter heat shield rattling on my moms old Toyota, I jammed a rock in in and it never rattled again!

Reminds me of a throw out bearing or pressure plate in a manual trans in a 72’ Buick 3 speed. Now that’s back in the day.

A guess at best but egged out bushing comes to mind when i hear the metal rattle.

Ok the two shafts are balanced differently, louder with the other one, quieter with it's own. If there's something loose in the bevel gear assembly then any fault is going to be amplified with a different balanced shaft. You are going to have to pull that gearbox out and have a look. A weekend project at home :)

That rattling sound makes wanna pull over and turn on the hazard lights. It has been really hot in my area this summer, like you say "hotter than two hubs of heck". Good stuff Smoaks!

Sounds like a vibration in the front end I think it’s tied to the front suspension. Great video what a mystery .

When the catalytic converter fluid is low the muffler bearing will rattle for sure! 🤪🤣👍

When you were shifting between the 2 gears back and forth, it kind of sounded like the frequency changed. Maybe engine speed depends.

I would go to Harbor freight and buy that cheap stethoscope Probe and use it to find out where the noise is coming from. I woud tape it to the head first. I would take a holes and extend it to make it long . And ride and listen

Had a noise like that once in a Mazda ute, turned out to be a broken timing belt tensioner bolt. And boy was that broken bolt a mongrel to extract!

As a consumer, I know that sound! It's the sound of lots of $$$$$$ to fix. Riding that bike, I was afraid something metal was going to shoot out at your foot... not a good sound at all.

Curious to see what it turns out to be. It has a sound like a shaft wobbling in a bore that is too loose. When you do find it I would imagine there will be marks from the hammering.

Yea, you've got to find this, its not suitable to sell or ride like that, and we are wondering if this will be a common problem with k1600, but yea I think its in the drive line-engine coupling. After looking at the transmisson parts, I'm wondering if its a/the shift forks shaking and tapping, so my question would be have you tried pulling in the clutch while you have the rattling and what response do you get?

Hi Shawn, that noise is a mystery for sure, im no mechanic. so here is my two thoughts, first one you did touch on, something sounds unbalanced when put under pressure, second thought, heat when putting engine under pressure causing warping, maybe a fan blade ? goodluck and cheers for sharing your day

Mine has the same noise, in 3 th, 4 th and 5 gear, 1 and 2 and 6 gear no noise, and about 1700 to 2500 rpm it's at it's worse. Bmw Dealer road the bike and he could hear it, but he said it was normal!!! It's a 2020 model. Wondering why bmw did not solve the problem on a 2020 model...if you find out please tell about it🙏

The frequency of the rattle seemed to be in unison with the engine rpm when you briefly shifted up and down through a couple of gears under light throttle. Perhaps it could be related to the engine rather than the transmission or final drive. It sounds almost like a connecting rod or it’s bearing about to let go.

Okay, here's my guess. That bike looks like it has riser extensions on it. Whoever put those own dropped one of the stock bolts down in the bike and it is resting inside the panels somewhere and rattling around when the bike leans just right.

Not sure how BMW clutches work but could the rattle be related to the clutch,much like older Suzuki's?,I have faith in you Shawn to find the problem.Might be a good competition for us peeps,who can name the problem!

Perplexing for sure! But if the shaft wasn't true, wouldn't it be making contact all the time? Not just in a neutral throttle setting. Could it be valve related? You sure had a beautiful day for it. Peace and love.

sounds like the bevel gear isn't fully touching , might need to be shimmed out .

I have the same model and my reverse gear stop working and seems then I notice when slow down especially in the third gear with out to used the clutch it makes a little noise not us loud as the one you working what is your opinion

Sounds like a fan blade to me. I have no mechanical ability but I have owned my share of crap vehicles lol. Video rarely does sound justice though

I've got a 2022 K1600GTL having the same issue. What did it turn out to be?

This was back in July of 2020, and it was quite substantial..! I mention substantial, as all K1600's can make a similar sound when you play around looking for it. When found, simply avoid those RPM's, gear, etc... This one could be felt strongly through the bike as well. The camera mic didn't record just how loud this was, it really felt like it was about to come apart, it was bad! BMW ok'd us to pull the transmission down and we found a failed bearing that was not a replaceable part. Took months to get the replacement transmission assembly..! The customer wisely bailed out and traded it in for an R1250RT and couldn't be happier... 👌 Thanks for watching and commenting!! 👍

@Overall Film Let me know if you find out anything, my 2022 16B is making this noise at around 2800 rpms in 1-3 gears, probably in 4-6 as well but by the time I get in those gears the wind noise is too loud to hear it.

@@Quik22 Sorry to hear that. I've been working with the Dealer since I bought the bike at the end of April. I've taken it in six times to have the dealer look at it. It's been in the shop nonstop since August 16th (2 months). Filed a complaint with BMW on Sept 17th. Very disappointed that neither the dealer or BMW seem to care at all that I'm out $30k for something I can't use. I'll I've gotten out of the deal is frustration.

Mine was making the knocking sound pretty much since new, they said don’t worry about it at the break in service so I’m just gonna keep riding it and if it self implodes they can send a tow truck and give me a new motor. I’ve got 3k miles on it now and just got back from a 3 state trip, seems to be running top notch but that knocking sound remains around 2500-3000 rpms under light load.

@@TheSmoaksVlogs ..the rationale/justification for a hot new dyno, use it for the bikes that come in for a #stage 1,2 0r 3 upgrade, and charge a nominal fee. 1 - 2 year make-up cost.

Did you ever find a solution to this issue? I have a new 2022 K1600B GA with 600 miles on it and it is rattling :( I do plan on having my 600 mile service done at Pro Caliber, so it would be great if you already have a solution. You serviced my 2016 K1600GTL over the summer (I traded it in for the B). I purchased my 2022 1250GSA from Pro Caliber and you serviced that one as well :)
