Many years ago I interviewed at GW for a job as a mould maker for Forge World. For the majority of the interview I was not asked about my mould making experience or what the procedure was when planning a mould. Nope, every few minutes the two interviewers would proceed to repeat the line "We have to stress that you are not an artist". Cheers guys I've been making moulds professionally for over a decade (at that time), I don't need reminding "I'm not an artist". I began to ask questions about their procedures and practices, just to get an idea of what moulds I would be making day to day. I never got an answer. Near the end I was asked how I would go about making a mould of one of their tanks, without being given an image of the tank in question. I asked if I could see an image so I could think of a working plan, I was denied and told "You won't always get to see the model before it's sent to you for moulding" then one of them dropped the clanger "We run our shop like a film studio".......The fuck you do. In the end I drew up a rough plan using a production standard to conserving silicone and making sure moulds are defect free. I was told that this went against company standard and wouldn't be cleared. I "had to follow their rules". I admittedly got annoyed and said "well if you'd tell me your rules instead of having me walk in blind, then the mistake would not be made". They protested, proclaimed that "all I had to do was ask". This really pissed me off as I'd asked several times and been denied information every step of the way. They then asked where I learnt to make moulds, I told them of my training, where I'd worked and who has trained me. They dismissed the 40 year industry veteran who took me under his wing back when I started with a nonchalant "Oh yea we know him. He worked here for a time, couldn't cut it. Wasn't dedicated to the company". This was the final nail for me, in the end, after two hours of dealing with them I excused myself from the interview. On my way out of the building I was approached by someone on the GW staff who I knew from my local store, he had actually helped get me the interview in the first place through some work I'd done for his store at the time. He was pissed, but not surprised. I reached out to my old mentor a while later and he explained that FW use cheap silicone and don't maintain moulds beyond basic checks for heavy degradation. Mould makers are not allowed to modify how sculptures are broken down for moulding or even have any input on aspects of the design to ease mould making. They are forever reminded that they are not "the artist" and denied any information until the last minute. It's all about speed and cost cutting and not about getting good quality moulded parts to the customer. It's annoying as the FW kits are some of the best GW produce....sad their attitude is a detriment to that.s
@user-gh3dc7zh5y
@user-gh3dc7zh5y 2 ай бұрын
That explains why FW always felt low quality and cheap even though it was meant to be the high quality premium version of warhammer
@DrFeelGoodHelpDesk
@DrFeelGoodHelpDesk 2 ай бұрын
@@user-gh3dc7zh5y that's the really annoying thing. The resin itself isn't low quality. It's loaded with filler powder don't get me wrong, but not the level of the "Finecast" resin which was so heavily loaded it was like chalk. It's their treatment of moulds that have led to the "low quality" feel. That's why if you're lucky enough to get a model that's an early pull from the moulds then you're going to be having a great time with it. Worst kit I ever had on my desk was a warhound titan that must have been a casting from a 14th generation remould as so many parts were misaligned in areas that were not along the mould seams. Took forever to clean up to make it usable. It's the major reason I have refused to do more than one Thunderhawk over the years.

I've always found the best way to make armor read as black again after highlighitng is to put a filter over it. Either by oil washing over a satin varnish or airbrushing something transparent like basilicanum grey or a very thinned ink. You still retain most of the contrast, but it punches it down a bit and tricks the eye into reading it as black.

Years ago when I first came across the Deredeo, I really thought it was hideous. Mainly due to the “uni-boob” bikini front- it kind of looks like the bow of a boat. Even though I know that the heads on Dreadnoughts aren’t the actual Marine’s heads, the illusion of the Deredeo always makes me think of a shallow iron lung type tank with just the patient’s head sticking out of a hole in the top. Luckily, over time the Deredeo has grown on me, and I can appreciate the different design knowing that it’s purpose isn’t the same as a Contemptor or Leviathan. And it’s about two weeks from being available in plastic, so I’ll be able to afford one without going broke. Great job on yours- I love the conversion and paintwork!

Love the conversion here. I too love dreadnoughts or any other big stompy robots, and I think the point about them being able to withstand the recoil and motion of the massive torsos is probably what throws me off the most. I really couldn't explain why it bugged me, but I think this video hits the nail on the head. I love the legs and think they solve the visual issues I had with it. Now to figure out how to replicate the same effect on my Leviathans too.
