Colosseum: Road to Freedom (originally Gladiator: Road to Freedom in Japan) is a 2005 video game published by Koei for the PlayStation 2. It is a hybrid fighting role-playing video game loosely based on the Roman Empire around the time of the Emperor Commodus.
Colosseum: Road to Freedom has the player take on the role of a slave that must partake in gladiatorial games in order to earn enough money to purchase his freedom. The majority of the game is spent training the player's character and fighting in arena battles. The story in Colosseum takes a backseat in order to allow a higher degree of open-ended gameplay. Players have the freedom to tailor their game avatar to their liking depending on how they answer questions prior to gameplay. Before entering the arena, players can participate in training sessions, allowing them to improve their skills.
Depending on the player's performance, it is possible to pay off the character's debts and still remain a freeman gladiator. The game allows for multiple endings depending on the player's performance over its course.

3:27 Fun fact: you could actually go to the enemy's side and take his sword first. Then you can run back, grab YOUR sword and dual wield against a man fighting with his fists.

Another Gladiator game I grew up playing was called "Gladius." It came out in 2003 for the GameCube, PS2, and Xbox, but I had the game on Xbox. It's more of a turn-based RPG compared to the real-time combat of most of the games you play, but you might still be interested in checking it out.

@@Ice_Demon. It was a tough cookie for me. Cuz I literally didn't know English at all back then also the absence of guides made me suffer playing through the whole game. Still pretty much enjoyed the game thanks to setting, combat and even stealth (remember the text was gibberish for me so finding out new stuff myself gave me a big sense of accomplishment. Also I remember being in the funny situations forgetting which option do what. For example waking up unconscious legionaries right after putting them to sleep myself. So you can imagine what's the outcome was xD.) I also remember (I just check, for clarity) Barca boss fight in the coliseum. Like beating him in the 20th+ try with my older brother and mother cheering for me 🤣. Kinda was my first DS type boss. His kicking boulders fighting style was really effect against 6 y o me. What a game and what an experience the ps2 gave me... SoR, Tekken 5, Soul Calibur 3, Time Splitters 2? Crash Bandicoot tho I can't remember the exact game and many many more.

If you plan to continue this, a few notes to help out as this game really doesn't explain a lot. If you actually wanna win your freedom you have to do exceptionally well and do basiccally every available match, but no worries as the story is simple yet oh so fun! Getting to the high rank by day 50 or something is the only major thing to aim for (Can't recall exact, but so long as you do most of the high paying bouts you'll be good) At the end of any match you can press L1+X and you'll be able to place weapons/armour in your box. Skills are fairly awesome for style points, lvl them up and you can melt unarmoured slaves At the small arena there is a store to buy and upgrade equipment, it is the primary and basically only source to get major drip from, just go straight out from the carriage and look for the ARMA sign For a bit of extra content, there is an alternate way to win your freedom. Once you've got some legit gear and wanna slam your head against a wall for us viewers attention, try walking out of any of the staging rooms with your equipment on. Last long enough and you might become as cool as Spartacus

@gaelpellat1821 Gonna be some spoilers here so everyone else be forewarned. Just going off memory here so a few details might be off. You have go have fought and lost to Commodus and done the second fight with Narcissus. Sometime around day 45-48, if you are the highest rank, Marcia will approach saying that Commodus wants a private training session. Agree, then beat his ass with the wooden swords; if you pick up one of his metal ones I'm pretty sure he runs away so stick with the wooden ones.

Lol I remember when the original DBZ budokai came out and it was the hottest thing out there for a while. It got sold out of our gamestop immediately and the only way you could play it in my area was there were 3 copies to rent at blockbuster video that you could only rent for 1 week. So you had to constantly call blockbuster to check if one was there and then beg your mom to take you thier asap before it was taken out again haha

There was a bit of a cheat if you enable the option to cut out an enemy head, hand or feet, then sell it to the vendor to get a ton of gold to spend on weapons upgrades and healing. There was also a prequel called Gladiator Begins on the PSP that actually had more of a story, but wasn't as immersive
