I definitely needed to see this video. I’m a 42 yo male who wanted to go to law school straight out of college, took the LSAT, bombed it, then went to work. 20 years later I find myself back in the same spot with that same desire of wanting to go to law school. This time I’m making it happen

Same here. At 42 I went back to get my paralegal associates degree, got straight A's and at 56 studying for my LSAT! She's right that we should know ourselves by now and getting my associates helped me to know myself intellectually and be well prepared for the rigors of law school. If you have the drive, you can do it!

I was 31 when I started law school and 34 when I finished. I enjoyed my time in law school immensely. I had been a practicing acccountant for ten years prior to law school. I went to law school as an academic pursuit and I had no desire to practice law and sacrifice my life on the altar of partnership track billable hours. Instead, I was blessed to get a job as a college professor teaching tax and business law, and getting a JD gave me instant credibility in academia. And last year, at age 57, I was blessed to get an LL.M. in tax. So for me, law school put me on the career path I enjoy to this day. That's my $0.03.

You are 100 percent right about older students not being intimidated by their professors. For me, my time in corporate was non-stop pressure, with endless deadlines and sometimes unreasonable supervisors. So when I started law school, for all the horror stories I've heard about law school, I already knew that law school was not going to be nearly as pressure-packed as the corporate world. Because of that dynamic, I found law school to be both fun, and therapeutic, and happily, none of my professors were the openly cruel Professor Perini from the classic book, One L; they were all genuinely decent people . By the Grace of God, I was able to balance my law student life with my everyday life and ended up doing well. I treated law school as a 10am to 7pm full-time job, and the rest of the time was mine, guilt free. And as you said, the more life experience one has, the less intimidating law school is going to be, and you can deal with your professors accordingly.

Finished my BA last year at 45. I had no idea so many people had an interest and desire to go to law school. The idea of graduate school floated through my mind when I earned my degree. I guess I am not alone, very inspiring.

I wrote the LSAT the second to last semester of undergrad. After I got my results, I then looked at my finances I realized I couldn’t afford to go. 20 yrs later after graduation, and 20yrs working my way up in the same company, my desire to go to law school hasn’t left. Watching videos such as this give me the confidence to know that as a person over 40 that I am not too old to start.

I m a 42 husband and farther and I am seriously considering taking JD, as it is the essential path to a higher degree like JSD. I have always been interested in constitutional law of the US. My past exp were mainly focused on entrepreneurship. I got two degrees in Economics from QS50 universities. I build successful business in both China and the US, in finance and real estate. I was a founder, board member, and principal of an international school in China. This year, I decide to pursuit my life long objective and that is to get a phd in law. My past exp gave me a comment sense, judgement, and analytical skill that are critical to successfully complete a law degree. While my savings and passive incomes enable me to devote 100% in academia without worrying the expenditures before and after graduation. Plus, I do speak good English and Chinese. With a credible law degree, I may find a career in think tanks and political research institutions which focus on analyzing the Sino-US international relation, trade policies, and the dispute of intellectual property protections, etc. Anyway, I am going to law school, who cares what they say...

I appreciate this video so much it gives me hope iamb 61 I never had a chance to really go to college. But I’ve been in the medical field. I know what a stress can be about I dealt with that. At the third tier schools, especially if they have a part time evening program, you will be looked at much favorably by everyone. That’s a guaranteed.

As someone who just turned 55 I appreciate your honesty about what the requirements and expectations are for the more mature students or those thinking about going back to school. I'm a writer, so explaining the need to be good at writing gave me a bit of confidence, but I do still have to brush up on that. Thank you very much!

I am really glad you made this video and I was lucky to have found it. Hi I'm from Guyana and I'm 45 year old male with a passion to wanting to pursue law. Here in the Caribbean , one enrolls in the three years LLB programme at university after which and having a good GPA and an entrance test is eligible to apply for one three law schools, based on one's geographic region. For Guyana our law school is the premiere Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad. One studies to achieve the CLE Certificate for two two years. Why at this age I've gotten interested in law? Its a long story for another time. Keep up making these informative and highly motivational videos.

Law school, sure, but how about getting into a law firm? Would they look down at that? I'm not 40, but I'm 27. I'm almost into my middle-aged era.. and I don't want to go throughout law school just to realize law firms aren't going to want me because of my age.

I wouldn’t consider 27 (30ish by graduation) old for a law firm at all! Most of the students that we work with are in their late 20s starting law school. It likely means that you have more experience under your belt, which a law firm will be happy to see.

@breakintolawschool well, technically, I still have community college.. My odds are a little dettering because I got my ged (I have to retake that so I can get at least a 700 score) and frankly being out of school since I was 16 I need to freshen up on my essay writting skills. Thankfully, I always loved writing.. I still need to take my SAT test.. or would you recommend the ACT?

@@brittneystaples7493 We have a ton of videos on writing your essays, so I suggest checking that out! We have worked with applicants over 60 before, so I promise you you're not alone in feeling a bit "behind" in the academic process. Regarding SAT/ACT, I suggest taking a practice test of each and seeing which you do better on! It doesn't matter which test you take as much as how well you do on it.

I will be 50 next year and always want to go to law school. The thing that is problematic for me is the LSAT, I don't quite seem to get it no matter how much (self) studying I do (Khan Academy, YT, etc).

It may be worth it to look into an LSAT prep course! The payoff in terms of getting into schools with scholarships can be worth the up front cost.

This is definitely a possibility! More people are starting to take the time to get work experience (and money!) and think about what they really want out of life before starting law school. It'll be interesting to see how this shifts!

Back in June, an incarcerated student was accepted into Mitchell Hamline School of Law! There is definitely possibility out there for students of all backgrounds.

@@breakintolawschool A felon should do a serious investigation as to whether they can be admitted to the bar before they go to law school. If the felony was related to dishonesty it might be impossible thus going to law school would be a waste of resources. Hopefully you provided this advice to them.

Swim got caught up in a very heated violent altercation in 2005 she was charged and convicted of 3 felonies by 2012 and after her 5 year prison term was complete she felt like she had experienced some major flaws in the Justice system from both the inside and outside. The cases she learned about and how she worked on her own appeal and filed her own legal paperwork with the courts made her feel at times compelled to go to law school as she struggled to find her place in the world, not knowing what she should do about her calling to study law she let every doubt hold her back so instead she wasted 4 years of her life changing major after major and moved across country and had a baby only to look in the mirror every morning and wish she knew what to do with herself that would make her feel a sense of pride, a sense of accomplishment and most importantly she wanted to make a difference in her community and so she started thinking about her passion how she wanted to help the wrongfully convicted people in this world find their way to freedom, she wanted to hold those people who were responsible for social injustice accountable, she had a gift to gab for topics of discussion in which she believed in regardless of how controversial they were despite her distaste for the law she also knew using the law to fight the law was her calling. Only thing holding her back from pursuing her dream of someday applying to, attending, and graduating law school was her insecurity about her age and her rocky past not with the felony’s she was convicted of over one and two decades ago but also having never even completed one good year in community college let alone having earned a degree at all…..what would you say to swim who feels so stuck and limited being a single mom with next to zero support at 39?

@@breakintolawschool I stumbled across a story about an attorney Sarah R. Gad who after seven felony convictions went to the University of Chicago Law School and is now a member of the Minnesota Bar and practicing as a criminal defense attorney. It does happen, but her offenses were non-violent drug offenses. If she had stolen credit cards or someone's identity I doubt she would have made it through character and fitness.
