A few pronounciation tips: In many languages in the world, words are pronounced exactly how they are written, every letter makes the same sound and it's kind of similar in most languages when written in the latin alphabet. English and French are the most notoriours outliers. Spanish is very phonetic, and since I know that you learned some German, you will be pretty close to correct when you read the Spanish names like you would read German words (works for most languages or is at least better than pronouncing them like English). In Spanish, the accent ´ indicates the stress of the word, so Bogota is pronounced "boh - goh - TA" and not "boh - GOH - ta". Quito is pronounced "KEE - toh", which is because of a peculiar pronounciation rule in Spanish (No shame in not knowing that).

You mean most Indo-European languages, not most languages overall. If we go to the Orient, especially Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Vietnam and some of China, pronouncing them the way it is in English is surprisingly accurate.

Spanish is such an easy language to pronounce, because it basically has only four rules an english-speaker needs to remember: 1. the accent thing you mentioned 2. A is pronounced Ah, not Ay 3. Lisp a lot 4. Speak as if you're reciting overly dramatic soap opera dialogue!

Also, keep in mind something these quizzes often overlook is that a small number of countries have more than one capital. Bolivia is one of them. La Paz is one, but there's a second one: Sucre.

I've failed a few because I couldn't tell which one of the capitals it wants. 🇿🇦 is the worst because it is the only one with not just two, but three capitals : Cape Town, Bloemfontein, and Pretoria. Remembering is not tough, but trying to guess which the quiz wants is annoying.

These were definitely the easiest for me. I learnt them in late 2021, before learning Europe. I then learnt the rest in mid 2022, but I often speedrun naming all of the South American capitals, countries, flags + finding them (PS I have a geography channel, and I'm gonna learn all of the states, regions, dependencies and so on, so wish me luck Also I learnt them this way: Brasilia sounds like Brazil, Buenos Aires I already know, Santiago I already know, Lima is like a lemur, which live in (rain)forests, Quito is unique, Bogota: my dad taught me, Caracas: idek, La Paz: there is 2 capitals, Montevideo: KZfaq videos, Georgetown is like the Caribbean capitals that I did one quiz on, Asuncion is like Ascension (Island), which definitely messes me up sometimes, Paramaribo was: I burnt it into my brain lmao

Brasil in the brazillian language is also writen with an S, that is why Brasilia is writen like that, and Brazil's capital was Rio de Janeiro, but that was a long time ago

As someone who speaks Spanish, this video is incredibly painful to watch. Edit: I also love how Jack found the Spanish pronunciation of Asuncion (with the lisp on the C), which probably isn't how many people from Paraguay actually would pronounce it.

Here you have some mnemotecnics for obscure North America Capital Cities: -St Lucia (Castries): Lucia had an accident and she put a cast on. -Antigua and Barbuda (Saint John): John liked so much Antigua and Barbuda that they named the capital city after him. -St Vincent and the Grenadines (Kingstown): Jamaica's capital city (Kingston) but with a W.

My mnemonic for Saint Lucia is: "it's the only country in the world named after a woman and its Capital is therefore, obviously, somehow castrated ("kastriert" in my native tongue). Thanks for the others. I always struggle with all the carribean (and oceanic) countries on WORLDLE and GLOBLE and FLAGLE but it's getting better. St. Johns/George/James and whatever uuugh :')

Hi Jack, Great Job!! I suggest that you learn all the Capital Cities of North America next, as there aren't too many (23) but they are one of the harder Capital Cities to remember! This is so you can prepare for the harder ones in Africa and Asia as there are quite a lot of countries in each of these continents. Of course, you don't have to do this continent next and I wish you the best of luck on your journey!

I found that Asia was the hardest, so personally I would go for North America next Tips Nicaraguas capital is Managua and they sound similar St Lucia capital is Castries, pasties taste good and St Lucia flag looks good, Trinidad and Tobagos capital is Port of Spain Imagine there’s a lot of tobacco in the Port of Spain

Jack, I’ve been watching your videos go a wile now, and I’m impressed with your goals to learn country names, capital cities, and flags. However, when you’re learning place names, I recommend also learning how to pronounce them. I do recognize, that some place names are harder to learn than others. I too have struggled with how to pronounce some place names myself, and had to look up their correct pronunciation. In addition, just like you, I enjoy the challenge of learning place names, capital cities, national flags, and other geography related things. Again, I really enjoy your videos and find them engaging, thoughtful, fun, and educational. Keep up the good work.

Something that could help with pronunciation is that the letters with the little line above it/tilde, means that that letter has a stronger pronunciation (if that makes sense) so for Bogotá, what you said would be Bogóta (If you speak spanish I know there are rules and Bogóta is not allowed in those rules but I have to put it more simply so that it is easier to understand)

Quito is pronounced more like the words KEY+toe together. As for Bogotá, put stress on the final syllable: bo-go-TAA (hence why there's an acute (á) over the a at the end). Aside from those, you did quite well pronouncing them.

(0:25) It's spellt with an S because Brasil is spellt with an S in Portuguese. Brasília is just the Portuguese name for the city. The English name, if there would be one, would be Brazilia. But since there isn't one, it's just Brasília in English. (Also, I noticed the syllables in English is Bra-zi-li-a, and in Portuguese it's Bra-síl-ia)

Jack, the best thing about Spanish is that the vowels almost always sound the same regardless of the word, unlike in English (where, for example, the A in father, apple, and pale are all different). The Spanish vowel sounds are AH, EH, EE, OH, OO. You also accent the next to last syllable unless there's an accent on another syllable. So it's SAHN-tee-AH-goh (Chile), ah-soon-see-OHN (Paraguay; note the final accent), boh-goh-TAH (Colombia; note the final accent). KEE-toh (Ecuador) and BWooEH-nohs AHee-rehs (Argentina) get a little more complicated because of the double vowels (ui, ue/ai) but still are gettable with practice. Best of luck!

Jack, one small note on the pronunciation of Asunción: the way you learned to pronounce it (with the 'th' for the 'c') is a perfectly correct way of pronouncing it, however, it is not how they pronounce it in Paraguay. There, they pronounce the 'c' as an 's'. The way you learned is how they speak in Spain, who colonized Paraguay and much of South American, so in my opinion it is better to pronounce it with the 's' sound. Hope this helps!

theres a song i learned in spanish class called "rock the countries" its very catchy and helps me to remember the capitals, theres a central america version too if it helps?
