Howdy Vancouver, I appreciate the shout outs with your video. You did a brilliant job, especially for swimming upstream, for example your moister barrier is Tyvek, Tyvek is a lot harder to plaster over than two-ply paper. Why? Excellent question glad you asked, there is no suction with Tyvek like there is with jumbo tex. No offense to Tyvek as it's one of the strongest moister barriers sold on the planet. When jumbo tex is used this paper sucks or absorbs the moister out of the stucco faster, with the cement plaster you were using it would set almost immediately, another thing you did was wet the moister barrier and 3.4 mesh wire this would make the patch almost impossible to adhere, but you did it and had fun while doing it. Mesh stucco netting should be attached horizontally with the outer lip to hold the mud, one would have to look closely as it's one out of thirty who realize this fact. And one of thirty who cares.🤔 So now I'm interested, thinking he has almost everything against his ability to make the stucco adhere, the fact is you did it means you are a natural and have advance skills in handling mud, obviously learned from drywalling. Also, your Hod-Carrier made your life easier as he had a cool curled mustache, kidding, 😏that man mixed the cement plaster as perfect as It can be made. People often think I'm talented not realizing that plastering is like a team sport. It takes at least two people, without good mud, we can't apply as effortless as it appears. Have I applied soupy mud, yes, have I applied mud so stiff each hawk full burns my arm, you betcha, but is sho-nuff nice to have mud mixed the way your was in this video. Your ability to improvise while still having fun and not panicking is surely why you will prosper in any direction you choose to go in. Hears how your finish coat is applied kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e86ap8ljqN-mYWQ.html BTW, the 3.4 mesh does come preferred or dimpled so the nails are not necessary, excellent again, improvising with adding nails to keep it off the wall. Lastly, I dont use a full radius trowel as they are for concrete, the trowel I do use is below kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jsWDhdyFrryxkok.html Bringing peace, love, and harmony back to the world of plastering. Here's my take on your job first step any clean cut Edge on the original plaster needs to be broke back so you can mend your wire if not then it will crack where the new wall and old wall meet we usually call those cold joints Next I would scratch and brown it regardless because when you try to put too much on at one time you get cracks and separation from the mud shrinkage when drying Unless you use some kind of cement containing eisenwall which is fast drying but for more the advanced plaster And since you're using Tyvek paper you don't need to wet it you only wet your paperback because it will suck up the water Tyrek don't suck up water now you increased your chances of mud sliding down the wall Next as for your mud mixing it looks like you used premix sand and cement so you could have just mix the material in a couple of buckets or small plastic barrel using a paddle drill you would have got a better fluff out of your mix that way And lastly you don't need that big pool trowel there is time and place for that all you needed was a regular 12 x5 hand trowel or one that you usually used on your drywall patches The big trowel makes you have to used too much pressure because of the long edges

Mad respect. One thing most people don't understand is that a repair is significantly more difficult than an initial new construction / whole house installation. The fact that u knew where to stop shows both experience and talent. That last little gap would have mindf@$%ed so many beginners in screwing with it for another hour and wasting another mix chasing 4 sq inches. I live in the new England where 1 in every 10,000 homes have stucco but I learned to install it in California on a youthful sabbatical from the real world and now those jobs pull a premium. Start to finish the job u just showed would fetch an average weeks salary for a highly skilled tradesman in my area. Labor and materials, no paint, texture match within reason.

We mixed our own stucco with lime, Portland and sifted sand. It lets you make it a bit more sticky. Noting the sun on the lower have will make it dry too quick. Might want to think about shading ur work area evenly next time. Love the videos. I look back on ur drywall vids every time I end of having to do that kinda work. Great reference.

kind of makes you wish they made a thing called furring nails. also the lathe should be hung horizontally so that the stucco can grab the pockets. a thinner scratch coat and then a 2nd layer is also the better way to go. you should have broken out more of the edges and tied into the original stucco and lath to prevent a giant crack forming between the old and new work.

Tie in your lath to the old stucco. Take it hammer drill and knock out the old stucco 3" from cut. Western blend sanded will make you a champ with a good bit of bonding agent (you work fast but a helper is required to clean and mix). 101 and mesh to blend. Texture, paint. Solid

I’m from the UK where stucco (render as we call it) is very common. The only tip i would give you for this stage is to not trowel down. You already have gravity working against you so just trowel up (at this stage) 👍 Oh, and fill the top edge in very first job on a bit of a chamfer (push it in firm) to help the sagging when trying to fill in one go 👍👍

For patching around windows or small areas, I use RapidSet but usually put 2 coats plus the finish coat because as this video shows it falls off it you put on too much. RapidSet cures very fast so I do a coat a day. The first coat looks a lot like a scratch coat. A medium size window might take me 3 bags of this stuff. I use more water than the bag calls for because I don't know how anyone can work it otherwise. I mix about 1/2 bag at a time because I work slow and it sets fast. I've used both chicken wire and the mesh. For the mesh I don't care about it being off the paper but for the chicken wire I use those nails with the cardboard offsets that hold it out. It's important to tie the whatever you are using together with the existing wire so try to preserve whatever is there when you are busting out the old stucco. You are asking for cracks if you have clean edges. Do not cut straight lines with a saw--leave the edges very irregular by busting it out, about 6" around the opening. The hardest part for me is the finish coat since you have to try to match what's around it. This is where a professional shines. I'm a not a professional but this is how I do it.
@cpad007
@cpad007 4 жыл бұрын
There is a time and place for clean, sharp edges but in this case, your edges need a "tooth" to grab onto in the same guise as the chicken wire or mesh gives for the field. Sage advice here.

If you're going to do a small patch then rapid set is great but if you're going to scratch and brown in a two-day amount of time then you could just use regular cement Rapid set is too expensive to be used in a 2-day method and really does not give you any advantage again in a two-day method
@FlyingSolo77
@FlyingSolo77 4 жыл бұрын

@edmundfrausto7588
@edmundfrausto7588 4 жыл бұрын
@@FlyingSolo77 rapid set I'm sure it refers to the product you get from either Home Depot or Lowe's one of the two and it usually has eisenwall cement in it which gets hard very quick and with that being said it is used to do two coats in one day They usually come in a 50 or 60 pound sack something like that and has sand already in it now regular plastic cement does not have that properties so that's why you scratch it one day and brown it the next day or so and comes in a 94 pound sack what you have to add sand to On an average a brown coat is let to sit 7 days before color coating at least in our area if you're doing a small patch it could be less than that if need be Again all depending on weather if the weather is damp then curing it's going to be slower if the weather is 80s to the 90s curing is going to be faster and if the climate is really hot then you better water down your walls or else your cement will bake on the wall before it has time to dry right which will make it brittle Also stucco refers to the method you're using wire lath cement and color coat are all labeled under stucco

Couple years late but I didn't see it mentioned in the comments. That wire lath has an orientation. It should go horizontal, with the angled expanded parts of the mesh pointed in and down towards the wall. This allows it to "hold" the stucco. when you put it sideways (vertical) like you did, it is not holding the stucco and can fall out much more easily. Aside for that, yeah, I've never managed to figure out how to make the stucco (or just mortar) "stick". I think kirk traded his soul to the devil for a magical trowel. :)

When installing paper backed lathe the wording should be facing up and readable. The lathe cups should be facing up and to the wall side. When applying the scratch coat. The mud is pushed into the lathe. The mud will bend over the lathe and down into the cups. This is called keying. Imagine pulling yourself up a chainlink fence. Your fingers bend over the wire and grab on. The little cups in the wire hold a little bit if additional mud making it hold better. The scratch or raking part should be side to side so the next coat keys to the first coat.

If you don't demo the existing and overlap the existing wire, and new wire, you will have cracking all along the patch. Never plaster to a smooth existing plaster joint....Fun to watch 👍

I have a question. I live in the States so my products are different. I have a home that I am remodeling and all my walls are either concrete or plaster (there are no wooden lathes behind them just some sort or metal wire, so I’m not sure) But every single one, ceilings as well. No drywall. They look as if they have a coating on them. Some sort of skim coat or mud. My question is, what product would I use to mud the walls and ceilings? Thank you for your time. Great videos btw.

Indo remodels as well in Ca. And I run into this all the time (plaster with a skin coat over it). I am by no means a pro but I've used regular drywall techniques and materials (drywall, setting compound and a too coat) to patch in with no issues.

Buy the brown boxes at home depot, they are premixed. Use the red lettering for taping/filling and the green lettering for your finish coat.

C Bass No worries, lemme know if you have any other questions. Main thing is to keep it simple. Nice thing about drywall/mud is that you can scrape it off if you don’t like it and start again.

So this was produced after the 2018 BC Building Code was put in effect? Interesting.
@zandemen
@zandemen 3 жыл бұрын
Just had to review it (BCBC) and it confirms what I was thinking, there are minimum of two base coats required, minimum 6mm each, the first base coat roughly scored to provide keyed fitting to second base coat, and second base coat roughened to provide keyed fit to top coat. probably all good you're able to get such a thick coat on in one go, and makes the double base layer irrelevant, but leaving a rough surface is still required.

Not bad. Where's your green float though. Kirk is shaking his head. Of yeah the old and new paper and wire should lap and you might consider using bonder around those edges to prevent cracking. that mud needs a bit of water

VC develops new stucco method of "hawking" it! hahahaha it actually worked tho! u should try to develop a new tool. maybe it is the the bigger surface of the hawk that helps apply it better by giving more blade area to push stucco into wall. then can use smaller floats to fine tune. similar to mudding... the bigger tool for application and smaller for fine tune.
