Ahhh, thanks so much for the kind words, I greatly appreciate that, and yes, our instincts are everything at the end of the day. No matter the lens, no matter the camera, no matter any of it, once you learn the fundamentals, it's all about your heart. But the fundamentals are pretty important too. :-) thanks so much for coming through, I don't take that for granted.

That’s funny. I gotta do something to stay productive in between films. 😉🙏 Glad it helped. These APSC lenses are awesome. I haven’t had the chance to play with the full frame versions, but I can’t imagine they’re any better other than not having to deal with the focal length equivalency. But the crop doesn’t bother me at all. I know that the full frame versions are lighter, so that would be nice, and these are heavy compared to most of my lenses, but they’re not crazy heavy, so it’s not really part of the equation at all in my opinion. Thanks so much for coming through, I really appreciate that.

Nicely shot video! I just received my S5 2x yesterday.... was thinking to avoid shooting in cropped 35 mode because of the higher noise level... but you've convinced me it is absolutely viable. Now I'm searching for a used copy of the Sirui 35mm anamorphic lens. Just to comment on Disheh's post on Roger Deakin on why he prefers documentary/reality style to Hollywood 3 point lighting which does not exist in real life... well... I go to the movies to escape real life!
@RockWILK
@RockWILK 8 ай бұрын
Here's to escaping real life in your art. ;) but honestly I can see both points of view. I think the magic is in combining them. Once I finish this film that I'm working on now, I'm about to work on a documentary where I will be using the Sirui 35mm and the 75mm exclusively. All anamorphic. I think you'll love the lens when you get it. And as far as aps-c mode on the S5, I find there to be no difference in image quality at all from full-frame mode. No added noise. Here is a great video going in depth about aps-c mode on the S5. If you haven't seen it, I found it of great value. And thank you so much for coming through, I greatly appreciate that. Best of luck with all of your work, and here's the video I was talking about... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jbqPbLCGz9-Yk2Q.htmlsi=xnVjL7s4wy0dDUrb

I really enjoy your videos and your reflections. I bought the GH5II. You say you don't use luts. I'm not crazy about it either. How did you get the beautiful color in this video? I suspect that the cloud cover is your "color gradation" in this case (?)
@RockWILK
@RockWILK 20 күн бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, I greatly appreciate that. This video was shot with my S5, but whether I use the S5 or the GH5, I always shoot in Log, and then when I bring the footage into da Vinci resolve, I set the input color space to the proper setting, Panasonic gamut, and then I just start working with curves and wheels until I get exactly what I want. But most importantly, I try to get my exposure right in-camera, which makes it a lot easier for me. I think setting your white balance properly is probably the most important part of all. Thanks again for coming through, I don’t take that for granted. Have a beautiful day.

I love the look of anamorphic lenses. I planning in buying the S5 ii x as i want to get more into the professional world, after filming with a camcorder since 2012😅. A zoom lens would be a better choice for the beginning I guess? Or do you think I could go with the anamorphic lenses from Sirui?
@RockWILK
@RockWILK 7 ай бұрын
It really depends upon how you shoot. Personally, I generally only shoot with two focal lengths, so two primes are fine for me. Meaning I can make a movie just using a 35mm and a 75mm when I shoot anamorphic, or a 28mm and a 50mm when I use my vintage lenses. But there is certainly a lot of sense behind using a zoom lens as well. It just depends upon your taste I guess. Zoom lenses are definitely more convenient. But then again it really doesn't take a lot of time to switch one lens. :-) I think it just depends. Sometimes you do find yourself in situations where you just can't change lenses, and if you know you absolutely need to change focal lengths, then a zoom lens would be the way to go. But if you're not going to situation like that, there's no problem at all shooting with Primes. Even one prime. I could shoot an entire movie with just the Sirui 35mm f 1.8, without question. Is that confusing enough for you?. :-)
@Jake_203
@Jake_203 7 ай бұрын
@@RockWILKthanks for the answer :-) maybe a bit confusing ;) Have you used the full frame anamorphic lens from Sirui or the one for apsc? I saw a video where someone used the anamorphic lens for apsc on a s5 ii, but does it give you any advantage ?
@RockWILK
@RockWILK 7 ай бұрын
@@Jake_203 Well, if you're using these lenses on a Panasonic S5, S5ii or S5iix, then bear in mind that 35mm is two different focal lengths between full frame and apsc, because of the crop factor. And so using the aps-c lens it's equivalent to 52 and 77ish, but the full frame lens is simply 35 and 52. Obviously I'm saying this because you can switch into a PSC mode on any of those cameras. So that's like giving yourself another lens. Then the squeeze ratio is different. And so the Distortion and the Bokeh will look slightly different I guess. Also the anamorphic lens flares are slightly different from a PSC to full frame, and of course that's just a matter of taste. But then again, the aps-c lenses are so much less expensive, and there is absolutely no loss of image quality using aps-c mode in these cameras, and the aps-c lenses do have their own look, so for me personally, I like the way my lenses look, but I guess when I originally bought them, part of my decision was based on price. Having said that, I don't regret my decision at all. I love both my 35mm and my 75mm. Also, I think the full frame lenses are lighter. And so you just have to make a choice given all that information. I haven't tried the full frame lenses, but I'm sure they're amazing as well. They better be, because they're a lot more money :-)

@@RockWILK again thanks for the answer. :) do you know if the autofocus still works with the Sirui lenses? I’m planning on buying the s5 ii x. It will be my first mirrorless camera. I really like Panasonic, my first camcorder that I still have is also from Panasonic, I just really like the brand ^^. The only draw back from Panasonic was always their auto focus, because beside that it seems that Panasonic offers the most video functions in hybrid cameras in comparison to other brands.

But I am certain that 50 mm would work really well too. Thanks so much!

The Last Supper, Anamorphic. Monalisa, Spherical. It depends on the subject and the size of the canvas. In cinema, Anamorphic was a commercial decision as they wanted to fit more and more people in front of that extra wide screen. Roger Deakins doesn't like Anamorphic as only the center is in sharp focus. The edges are not only softer but also pinched. He says he doesn't shoot anamorphic because of his documentary background as he cannot stand something which is not 'real'. For that matter Deakins abhors Hollywood's 3 point lighting system with a backlight creating separation. 'Who looks like that that in real life,' he says.
@RockWILK
@RockWILK Жыл бұрын
Yes, Deacons shoots with spherical lenses, but puts them in a wide aspect ratio at the same time. I love everything that that man does, so it’s hard to argue with him, but I have to say, I love the way this lens looks. Perhaps that’s because it’s only a 1.33, so it’s not truly getting that anamorphic look, but it is a great lens. I’m always gonna have everything with me, and do what’s best for the story, that’s the bottom line. You can always shoot with spherical lenses and output, the project to scope, so there are so many options, and most people would never notice what lenses you’re using. I believe that’s more of a cinematographer thing, that the average person has no idea. They are simply immersed in the story. Thanks so much for coming by, and for the constant great energy, I really appreciate it. Means a lot.
