I’ve dislocated my shoulder 11 times now, done the 11th time today at mma. Always done strengthening exercises to try and help it. In my experience, once it goes, it goes.

Evan Hudson you are definitely more susceptible to re-injury when it happens. Are you changing up training strategies? Is there a specific situation in training that has caused the recurrent dislocations?

The Jiu-Jitsu Therapist I’ve always just done the standard resistance bands training to help strengthen it, then when it feels ok it pops out. It’s whenever I get it in an Americana position, this time, I had an undertook with the affected arm, and I went to grab a single leg but my partner squeezed my arm with all his strength and it came out.

@@nave94 After the second time, it is recommended to see an orthopedic surgeon, because after surgery the chance of dislocating again is 5%, but without surgery it is 100%. But I know how it is, I've already dislocated 2 times and ended up getting used to the pain.

I just dislocated my shoulder on my first day of bjj class, was supposed to be some easy sparring at the end of class to review what we learned and my opponent went way to rough and yanked on my arm from behind. Currently in a sling and have to have follow up doctor appointments. Always been super interested in bjj and the dislocation didn't discourage me, definitely wanna get back into it once I'm healthy. But it is a pretty scary thought that my shoulder may never be the same.

Excellent content, I have had a humerus break at the shoulder Joint end from a severe impact injury, after lots of strengthening and 18 months post injury decided to have chat with a mate who is very experienced in jujitsu who i trust to put me into some positions which I will be in during any class, the key being that he was able to roll it on in a safe manner and knew that I carried an untested injury, this helped massively for confidence and was done in the safest manner possible IMO, I strongly suggest doing the same either if you know an EXPERIENCED person in juijitsu or shell out to do this with an instructor in a private session as he mentions in this video, it will either give you confidence to go on or steer you back into the gym to further strengthen if there is doubt, i was not interested in finding out my limits by a white belt/ inexperienced person if they did not fully understand the limits etc, it may have been fine but if you are anything like me and hated every minute of being at a sub par state in the rehab, I didn't want to take any chances, I hope my experience can steer someone in the right direction or help give some perspective, always keep strengthening the joint too 👍

My shoulders have both dislocated multiple times, but I spent the last 2 years doing tons of strength training, and since then they are much more stable than they’ve ever been. Still more of a risk for me than someone who’s never had a dislocation, but workable. Yesterday while training bjj, my partner very quickly went for an arm bar, and I felt my shoulder strain. I’m a little sore today, but I did not have a new dislocation. I plan to continue training, but I’ll be letting my training partners know that my right shoulder is sore right now and to just assume the tap. Last night I instantly verbally tapped when he grabbed my arm because the angle was weird and it hurt right away. Is it smart for me to do this? Probably not, but I enjoy bjj enough to take the risk. That’s the math we have to do. My advice to anyone with bad shoulders is to do a ton of strengthening of the shoulders. I added some visible mass to my deltoids and I can absolutely tell the difference now days.

Hey Eugene, Ive been doing bjj for 2 years now, and I have chronic subluxations in my right shoulder which makes me hesitant to make some moves when rolling because it sometimes pops out. What should I do to have a more stable shoulder that won’t give out on me every once in a while? Thank you love your content
@TheJiuJitsuTherapist

Mark Dusso I think adjusting your training is smart and a good idea to try and protect your shoulder. Possibly looking at using only one side when getting under hooks for example. I know that may limit your game but being able to train with the least risk of injury is the most important thing in my opinion. Then strengthening the shoulder and surrounding area is crucial as well. That may include rotator cuff strengthening and shoulder blade musculature strengthening. Controlled drilling as well to see what your shoulder will also tolerate well in a safe training environment. Recovery and adequate rest are pieces to pay attention to as well. It’s a combined approach and listening to your body is again important.

You probably have a torn labrum man. Beyond rehab and strengthening you might need surgery. I'm in the same position and sadly I have to just not do Jiu jitsu until after surgery. Just be careful you don't turn a little labrum tear into a completely destroyed shoulder!
@dsrider185
@dsrider185 4 жыл бұрын
@@VaaliD93 +1 on the labrum. See an orthopedist or good PT, get an MRI, and take it from there. You can strengthen the cuff and get it pretty stable when you're within controlled ranges of motion, but the labrum is cartilage (no blood supply) and cannot really heal on its own. Problem with BJJ is always getting pushed/pulled outside your range of control (head/arm choke, kimura), and quick movements (arm drag, planting a hand to avoid a sweep). The surgery carries a lengthy recovery process but might be the best option depending on the extent of your injury and what you're looking for in the long run. FWIW, I'm 6 months out from a 5 anchor posterior labrum repair, and still don't feel ready to roll. Best of luck!

@King David mine was so bad that it dislocated holding Thai pads one day lol. My partner hooked the pad and my arm just went flying, shoulder completely out. I literally popped it back in like it was nothing because this was now the 3rd time, and also the lowest impact as the first 2 times were pretty big impacts/falls. Haven't done any martial arts since and that was a year ago now. Shame!

I’ve had it dislocate in the past about 50 times no joke. Couldn’t do basic day to day movements without it popping it. Originally had a guy in a rugby game during a scramble yank my shoulder upside down cause of the awkward positioning and it all started from there. 2 surgeries later and screws put in shoulder. Always feeling tightness with awkward positions. Is it good to train?

I have a genetic shoulder problem, so it regularly dislocates. Once it recovers enough to be stable its alright, but its all about knowing your shoulder movement restrictions. Some movements increase the chance of it dislocating. When it dislocates the risk of it happening again is high. The best way to fix this imho is rehab excersises and avoiding certain movements. For example in boxing i avoid overhand hooks because my shoulder dislocates 99% of the times i try it. focus on mastering other techniques instead of learning the once that most likely injures you.

Mind you I'm nearly 40 been grappling since I was a child in wrestling did mma decided after I stopped doing mma to join a group of gi people and from that point on I was always in pain. I won some tourneys pretty easily I'll say because i was a white belt been grappling for years but had to be white belt with a bunch of spazes who skills are pretty lacking against my experiance. So yeah I got messed up pretty quick I quit and returned back to an mma gym a old training partner owns I go in an help teach mma grappling which is way different anyways a lot of bjj now days doesnt address getting punched in the face. So I'm better off now but shoulder is still messed up have to get cortisone shots every 6 months doctor wont even do an xray idk maybe I need a new doctor.
