This series documents my attempt to ride a unicycle 674km across the entire width of Latvia. I’m alone and unsupported, wild camping along the way. If this wasn't challenging enough I'm also sticking exclusively to an off-road hiking route, named the Baltic Forest Trail! In this instalment I learn a more about a popular Latvia pastime; mushroom foraging!

Strange thing about the world is how as groups, people can be so awful, but if you travel, you'll surely notice that most folks you run into individually are super kind and helpful. Sure, there are certainly a few stinkers out there, but in general, people are kind. Latvia does look dope tho.

You have to be careful of "false chanterelles" in the UK. Not sure they're poisonous but not good to eat?
@medievalladybird394
@medievalladybird394 4 ай бұрын
@@laughoutmacleod that's right, the false chanterelle can be recognized as such ( I remember being told how when I was a child), is only slightly poisonous and seldom harmful. The deathcap on the other hand looks rather like the edible Amanita Caesarea but is highly toxic and even in tiny amounts usually deadly.

Your knee story reminds me of that time, where you got insane cramps somewhere on your world trip. I am now 38, and I don't know if it's a matter of age or malnutrition, but these days, I almost always have cramp issues when being finished with a bike trip over 100 kilometers. A month ago I went 170k in a day, and those cramps were evil. Though honestly, I am so used to them by now, that they are very painful, but I can handle them. It's just so awful when one cramp is finally ending, to then make a single wrong move and your leg is instantly back to feeling like it's gonna rip at any moment. And yes, I do have magnesium vitamins, where I usually take one pill before a trip. Sometimes after. They certainly lower the cramp issue somewhat, but don't prevent them. So I wonder if there is anything else I'd need to do differently. Maybe having more breaks on such a trip for letting the legs relax? Sometimes I keep cycling for 2 or 3 hours without a single time getting a foot on the ground. One thing certainly coming down to age are the joints, which do sometimes feel exhausted. They don't hurt, but you feel them complaining. Cycling is supposed to go easy on the joints - but I have been cycling so much over the years, that it's wearing them out nonetheless I suppose....... Gotta enjoy cycling for as long as I can. Hopefully I can still cycle in 30 years, though probably not for over 100k a day anymore.

@@marcinkwiatkowski9926 Not quite true, giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) has become a major problem in some areas of Europe - that stuff is quite possibly nastier than poison oak and the like, just more obvious due to its size. Any contact with the sap reduces the resilience to UV damage in the affected area of the skin for several days, basically causing severe sunburn from very little exposure. It's also highly invasive.

Why would they? People in general are not out to "get" random people they meet, and since they were picking mushrooms for themselves they would give him mushrooms they themselves would eat. All mushrooms they showed are very common and well known.

@@jeffknott1975 I guess I was a bit unclear in my first post. Where I come from foraging for mushrooms is common. It is well known that one only picks mushrooms that one knows is safe to eat. Only novices without any prior knowledge at all, either of mushrooms, foraging in general, or that there are resources for learning, picks mushrooms they are uncertain about. (This is extremely uncommon by the way, almost never happens) Lithuania is not far away from where I am (Sweden) and they seem to have a similar foraging culture. This is emphasised by them showing the ways one can distinguish an edible mushroom fom an unedible one. These guys were local, out in the forest for the specific purpose of foraging mushrooms for their own consumption (as others were at the same time, Ed has shown them i previous videos). With this in mind, the only reasonable explanation for them giving him a poisonous mushroom would be with the explicit purpose of poisoning him. This is why I said the part about them picking mushrooms for themselves, so they obviously would not poison Ed.
