Can It Go 270? | 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Range Test

When Ford released the range figures on the Mach-E, some started scratching their head. How is it that the Mach E, with 88kWh of energy on tap got a lower rating than a Model Y? This begs the question: How far can it really go? In my last test of the Model Y I managed 225 miles of range, can Ford best that?

Love your channel. One suggestion for your range test is to do a constant 70 mph test on a two way loop. Your range test has to many variables that you can otherwise eliminate such as traffic, red lights, how you accelerate and brake, hills etc.

@@dchow007 Tesla gets better range lmao? It is also faster, larger interior, and there is no dedicated charging network for the mache lmao, Tesla can use both Superchargers and the chargers everyone else use. @megaroeny

@@EpicLemonMusic Tesla can only use Chademo only if you have an adapter. Even then it's slow. Plus Super Chargers are getting crowded and you only get the fast speeds of you're not sharing a power line with someone next to you. Personally I rather not deal with Superchargers at this point. Not everyone wants a faster car, or harder suspension, less comfort, and the quality is much less than the Mach E. You mostly pay for performance and some tech in a Tesla. So I'll pass.

I find it really impressive that at mostly 70mph driving the Mach E gets more than its EPA range. I typically assume EPA is more accurate if you assume you're driving 55MPH with no HVAC, because that's what it seems to mean for most cars. This is a good thing for Ford: I think most people would rather be pleasantly surprised by their range than disappointed when they wanted to drive 70 for the full 270 miles.

Under similar condition, my Chinese made 60kwh can do 180-200 miles per charge with a little bit of safety buffer on the bottom. It seems that 88kwh with a heavier frame does not bump the range that much, 240 miles per charge is reasonable. But the price is double. So im waiting for the second gen ford ev with 100kwh package. That will worth the upgrade!

This Mustang Mach E looks better and better. I was considering a Toyota Rav4 Prime, but now I might just pull the plug and go completely EV because of cars like this one and the upcoming Ioniq 5. BTW, you've had a lot to do with that change of mind. I've watched many of your videos over the last year and you've slowly changed my mind to go full EV. I'm currently driving a 2004 Prius (with 275,000 miles), which when I bought it brand new and fully loaded, was considered the most technically advanced highest MPG mass produced car in the world. One aspect of where you live and are able to test electric cars is the much greater proliferation of charging stations. Probably 90% of US does not have this concentration of charging outlets, meaning not only locations but total number of electric "pumps". It will be very interesting to view this video in 20 years when charging locations are as common as fuel pumps. For now you are in EV paradise and most of the country is in EV desert. In much of US people commute in F150s, CUVs and SUVs, and it is rare to see an EV. But the change will come. It will be interesting to see how many Mach E and ID.4 are sold in my EV desert this year. And yep, the folks going 80+ mph in Texas are not going to get 270 miles from their Mach E. 🙂🤠

Great. This is a much better looking car than the boring Tesla Model Y. Bet it is of higher build quality too.

Some EV's are designed to only use the middle range of the battery to extend it's life. My Volt would read 100% on the display, but it really is only at 90% of the battery's capacity. When it reads zero, there is 10% left in it. This kind of scheme is how you get around people's behaviors that damage batteries.

For all the tech and the 340 kw charging available the Mach E will still be hampered by the often horrible charging network of EA and EVGo. It’s a beautiful vehicle and looks like it’s well made. Take a long trip, see what it’s like to have to move from plug to the next repeatedly and most times have to contact the customer support to try and diagnose the issue. Often it’s taken care of by a fairly quick reset of the station. But as I experienced in BFE Oklahoma at a Loves Country Store on a cross country trip, none of the 4 units there would work. I had to limp down the road at 35mph hoping to get to a station that would work. Cool looking car.

Man great video! So I live in NJ so in the colder months this vehicle will get significantly less real world range (due to lack of heat pump) I am thinking somewhere around 200-220 miles? Which is around the same as a Model Y in the cold with a heat pump. And this is due to the fact it has a much larger battery. Have you had any issues with the tech? Android auto? Apple carplay? Backup camera quality and smoothness?

As far as avoiding full charge, discharge or staying at max too long, isn't Ford's buffering on both ends of battery capacity (full and empty) going to avoid (or at least reduce) that issue?

Sorry I didn't see the Model Y test. What Model Y (other than the single motor rear wheel drive) can do so little as 225 miles? I have a performance Model Y and I usually get 280 and almost 290. What gives?

So, 280-290 miles based on your standard test loop, and 270-280 when you run the battery completely down. Not too different. Alex, do you think the test loop is good enough for future range tests with other vehicles?

In a gasoline hybrid sedan you pollute less and you can have a range of over 400 miles. Then, with a 5 minute fill up at a gas station, you can go another 400 miles provided you drink enough coffee. I once drove from Willits, California, to Tajuana Mexico in one day, so I know it is possible.
