As a good musician you have to listen to all genres because you learn a bit from each one. So, when it's comes to judge a different genre than you play, in your head isn't the image of the best power metal guitarist because pop music doesn't require same level of virtuosity (if it is a high virtuosity it will be a plus) You judge that person feeling for music. And Li did it extremely professional. Except the part where he was ''agree'' with MGK haters (it is plenty of space, under the sun, for everyone)

It's kept me practicing alone in my room for almost 20 years hoping to one day be good enough and I've never released a single until this year because every time I record something "it could be better". I decided to live in my car and play around the country on street corners to get practice performing and holy shit did that make me realize how bad I still was and how little I cared since the next person to throw a 10 in the case would keep me from having to ask for help getting food for me and my dog. I learned a lot, like when I mess up I just try to get the crowd booing along with me and have some laughs before jumping back in; fits the vibe and turns the energy right around. Much love to Herman Li for having such a positive outlook, it's inspiring to say the least and we really should all just have fun and stop reaching for unattainable levels of perfection. I can look in the mirror if I wanna be disappointed, but when I play who cares if you like my music or even if I have an off-performance cause at this point my whole life has gone into it so at least it's true to me and other like-minded people.

I'm 52, been playing since I was 12. My best advice is put the electric guitar down for 3 or 6 months. Practice on an acoustic steel string. Anyone can sound decent on an electric with distortion. In 2016, I worked on a tv show, Roadies, with MGK, and at that point, Colson had been playing guitar for about a year, and I know this, because Colson told me himself. These scenes on that show with Halsey under the bleachers, and in the tour bus, singing Simple Man, were among the very first times he played guitar in front of a camera. He was very nervous for Simple Man, as it was the very first time he sang and played guitar at the same time, and had it recorded for everyone to judge for all time. He practiced a lot, and worked hard because he respects his audience, and the song too. It is six years later now, and I guarantee that he has put a ton of time to get better and learn the craft, which is especially difficult with the eyes of the world on you. Colson was a good guy to work with, and there is no doubt that he has a long way to go with his playing, but so does almost everyone else reading this comment. Colson is the real deal, not a phony, and he has earned my respect and appreciation.

As a fan of MGK I truly appreciated the OBJECTIVE & UNBIASED pov. As a fan of his that's ALL I wanted. Didn't want smoke being blown up u know where, or blind hate with zero constructive criticism. You were extremely fair and accurate in your assessment I'd say. As a fan I think one of MGK's biggest strengths how versatile the guy is. He may not have mastered one particular thing but he's also talented in a wide variety of ways. " A Jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one." I'll say, if you've ever been to a show he's really good live.. You can tell he really enjoys what he does and puts his ALL into every show. The guy has a crazy work ethic too and NEVER stops working. He's constantly writing, making, releasing new music, acting, touring, performing a late shows, doing interviews, phototshoots, making appearances, ect. He reallh doesn't stop. Only thing I completely disagreed with was him getting murdered by Eminem. Yes, Rap Devil doesn't even compare to Killshot (lyrically.) But for me I still enjoyed Rap Devil much more. First off, Eminem dissed MGK and for me I respect the fact that he had the nuts to not be too afraid to fire back, and actually stood up for himself. THAT my friend is what Hip-hop is all about. It's always Much better to swing back, and even miss, than to not swing back at all. Didn't see any other rappers fire back at Em when Em was dissing them. And I LOVE Eminem. Rap Devil was objectively really good and even most of the main popular hip-hop heads seem to all agree and come that consensus. Which brings me to my last point, MGK's next album is a hip-hop album.

I found the part where you talk about people having to look at the fret-board to play really interesting... I'm still learning to play a guitar at only about 2 Years & 2 Months into that... I've never had lessons though except for 2 lessons on an acoustic guitar when I was 12 years old... Acoustic wasn't my style... The point is that 2 years ago I started with Rocksmith 2014 and no experience or training... From the bottom up I've learned from trying to play songs on there... That has meant that I spend far more of my time looking up at the screen to see what I need to hit next than I have at the fret-board... Maybe it's slowed my progress in some ways but I think it's helped me in a lot more... I can now play a great deal of music while barely having actually look at where I'm going with my fret hand because that's all I've ever been able to do... Most of what I play is too fast to keep up and see both so I've had to learn to play without looking that much... I never really did know what was normal, my way or the other way but I assumed most don't learn to play guitar like I did... I don't think I could have learned a different way nearly so quickly... That part of your video really interested me though.

Talk bad about him and he doesn't withdraw and wreck himself on drugs like a lot of so called "stars" do. Ive been playing guitar for 20 years and can honestly say he knows enough to do some great things. He has the tools and knows what he doing and its only a matter of time before the two become one to enable something special to happen. Good for you MGK. As a guitar player, he plays decently. He's like Kurt in this aspect. He can play well enough to write his own songs and connect with people. His vocal range isn't that great, just like Kurt's vocal range was. I am with Herman on this one. I hope he does inspire people to pick up the guitar and expand their interests. The whole reason I picked up the guitar was a mixture of my father's playing and Linkin Park and Lenny Kravits being my introduction to rock music. I then expanded my musical tastes and I can say now that I have an appreciation for all types of music, even those styles I'm not a fan of. I don't care for the guy's attitude towards others, but it helps solidify his image. He is the villain that we need because he is bringing attention to rock music to an audience of people who probably thought rock music was just senseless noise. So for that alone, I am thankful he's out here doing his thing.

It's all about feel. Gary Moore springs to mind. Music like art should move you and be felt in your soul.

I've listened to dragonforce for years, but this is the first time I've actually heard Herman Li talk. Never watched any videos of his where he's talking until now though. Really interesting accent, I like it.

I love the idea of finding the spot in the song that allows for smoother transitions because I never actually thought of it that way. When I was coming up, I treated huge position shifts just like learning position and shifting on the violin: I would repeat the same shift over and over again until I got it right. While that did get the job done it wasn’t near as much fun as starting with something musical and adding just enough technical prowess to get the job done. There is a line in Victor Wooten‘s book where a character says that they cannot play a particular instrument and the response is good then play music. I hope that Machine Gun Kelly can teach the current generation who have all been exposed to over processed auto tune/beat detective beleaguered music how to have their own unique voice. I don’t think that it’s an accident how nirvana had already hit the scene when jewel was able to write music when she literally only knew four chords in that order exclusively.
