India's huge election produced a weaken Modi government: many wonder if this will lead to a weakened India globally. This doesnt seem the case, with numerous Western leaders, notably US President Biden, being quick to congratulate and express support the BJP, showing how in-demand India is in geopolitics.
In this Part 2 conversation, I am rejoined by Abhijit Iyer-Mitra - a leading and influential voice on India's foreign policy. We debate the history of India's current approach, why so many leaders are keen to show support to India, the countries posing the biggest opportunities, and those with the biggest risks to India's interests.

One of the hallmarks of a real superpower is a very efficient and impartial judicial system that is impartial and timely in solving and delivering judgements on cases. India is so far behind with outdated laws and I believe 50 million cases pending for decades. Just having a great military without the people having good jobs is only half a superpower. All the Law Ministers over the years of both parties have done little to clear the backlog of cases. This backlog and outdated laws will create turmoil in the populace in the years to come.
@user-fm4hd3zw3q
@user-fm4hd3zw3q 4 күн бұрын
I totally agree that an efficient and impartial judiciary will enhance any state. It provides genuine stability and security for the citizens. That applies to all countries, superpower or not. Superpowers can have dreadful judicial systems that are just organs of state repression (ussr/prc) but massive military and economy may make them superpowers anyway. I’m nitpicking here of course. I would hypothesise that : 1) for whatever inefficiencies it suffers, India’s judiciary has enough independence from the government to put it way ahead of any non-democratic country AND 2) contestable elections and a vigorous press are effective mechanisms to (perhaps painfully) improve the situation. Wishing good luck to India.

Get him to explain this dilemna @risingsun2995 aryan and swastika, sounds like nazi idealogy. But germans are far away from india and they don't claim to be hindu. Their skin tone are white. North east or north indians are not exactly white. If germans are pure, then you are not exactly pure. Where did the impureness comes from? The big problem is you claim to be hindu. If hindu deities are pure, you are not exactly pure because you are not black enough, unless you are south indians.

Yup. Qatar kept bullying India even in Modi's 2nd term. In Modi's 3rd term, we are seeing more attacks on Indians in Qatar. More attacks have happened in J&K (4 attacks in a week). So, foreign policy and even the internal policies are appearing to be weaker than 2nd term. Let's see how situations are in the next 1-2 months.

from China's perspective, the Indian viewpoints expressed would likely be seen as emblematic of an outdated, zero-sum mentality aimed at containing China's rise through great power rivalry and territorial revisionism. Beijing would reject claims of actively undermining China-Russia ties, downplaying of border tensions, and assertions that the Pakistan-Kashmir issue is resolved, while pushing back against efforts to decouple economic and strategic relations. Ultimately, China would portray such a stance as a Cold War mindset fundamentally at odds with its vision of a "new model" of major power relations based on mutual respect, win-win cooperation, and acceptance of China's legitimate interests as an emerging superpower.

Assuming you have a good amount of audience in the UK and Europe, it would be good to get AIM talk about British rule in India vs Mughal/Islamic rule in India. Leftist anti-colonial historians in India and likes of Tariq Ali have presented an acerbic view on British rule in Indian subcontinent and glorified Mughal/all previous Islamic rulers in India. It's about time to hear an alternative viewpoint from AIM which in my opinion is a lot more realistic.

I beg to differ. Nehru was never that committed to India's strategic interests. He must have complained to Soviets about chinese at some point in time especially after the flare up between India and China but there is no evidence to remotely suggest that his government acted with intent to drive wedge between China and the Soviet by filling chinese ears with aspersions on Soviet. Sino soviet rapport had their own conflicting dynamic on policies of development through communist revolution (classical conflict over agricultural or industrial debate) that they both aspired to portray as their contribution to path of "success" they believed small minion states would idolise them over with spread of communism that would help them asset soft power and on top of that soviet had an alibi of reaping strategic dividends from the possibility of a large populated neighboring country of China that with growth in military might could pose threat to their sustenance and strategic interests remaining comfined as a second rate power with overarching focus on agricultural growth. Both being expansionist and both having contiguous land borders added fuel to the fire and given this bilateral dynamic, a tipping point was anyway set to be overflown which eventually happened. Nehru was just confused about how to procced in bilateral relations with either of them as he was too drawn towards clinging onto power in his country and in his party (in desperation of securing a future for his next generation) and having no clue on foreign policy, played safe by placating and appeasing both big powers separately just to be in their good books, unsure which way the water would flow as going with the US being a no-go for him due to ideological inclinations, indictrination, family background and training. Abhijit's comclusion ascribing the sino-soviet rift to Nehru's socalled deliberate divisive policies premised upon eventual outcomes of a different dynamic is a revisionist guesswork. His monumental mistakes in not starting to play a balancing powergame between the US and the soviet, rescinding UNSC seat on filmsy ground, not blostering his any "divide China and soviet" kind of divisive policy with robust military policy on ground of defending Indian territories in the contingency of a chinese attack resulting in kneejerk but weak-kneed reaction during chinese invasion of 1962 can not be described as poor second and third order implementation of a brilliant first order policy, but rather the sheer lack of the first order in the first place. He was just another brown sahib elite fabian socialist trained to be enamored with intellectual superiority of his colonial overlords who loved to rub shoulders with and be used as doormat if the need be, by the british royalty and their extensions and just happened to be at the right place at the opportune time- there were numerous others like him and somebody had to be to fill in the void and do their overlords' bidding- I doubt if he thought of himself as highly as the extension of the british royalty (may be as a "suzerain" puppet king under the british royalty).

@@biggpicture2930 Nehru did not expand India and sovereign Indian state did not practise any imperial expansionism of sorts. At the cusp of India's independence from british colonial rule, Congress under leaders like him remained so lobotomised of a sovereign independent India's long term strategic interests in order to portray themselves before the british as the most benign entity fit for transfer of political power that they could not resist India's partition on religious grounds and loss of fertile and mineral rich land (British obviously feared of an independent India indignant with colonial past siding with the soviet so they needed a vassal in the region in the form of Pakistan to pull plugs on India and also to anchor in the region to be in fray in the great game played from the time of tsarist russia and the british empire). It was Sardar Ballav Bhai Patel, the then home minister under Nehru, who had to play hardball with Nehru to annex several erstwhile suzerain princely Indian states under the british Indian empire (that Britain declared sovereign when they left to render India divided and weak) and recognise Indian people's prolonged yearning for a united sovereign nationstate in those regions (India ofcourse did not expand into Arab or China or south east asia or Africa unlike the european colonialists so your use of the word "expand" is utter baloney) and Nehru had thrown spanners into this man's work in his personal greed of coming across as a pacifist statesman and true forebear of Gandhi's nonviolent ideals before the new world order at the expense of India's strategic interests. He also feared coup from Indian armed forces despite his party having full majority in the parliament and instead indulged in populist doleouts to reap short term electoral dividends and cling onto echelons of power which is how Indian arned forces were kept illprepared, their demands of modernisation was neglected ultimately leading to defeat in war against an equally poor China despite India possessing certain terrain related natural advantages. We understand back then fledgling nascent Indian state was weak and its vast population were impoverished and nobody expects of India with that limitation to fight and win against the US or the soviet union. The very fact that India lost to an equally poor China smarting under similar issues thanks to Nehru's lack of geopolotical providence does not let you distract by dragging India's ground realities back then.

 @knightatdawndonbynight8432 Nehru wanted to invade china, taking advantage of the famine of 59-61 that had weakened china but was so shocked that the emaciated china army managed to overcome the strong well fed 'British trained ' legacy Indian forces, that he gave up his conquering ambition. and left Myanmar and other neighboring nations to his successor. No Indians did any better.
