I would still take Martin as England manager. People talk about Gareth Southgate being tactically inept, and there's truth to that, but I believe the key ingredient that's missing from this talented England squad is a manger that can instil belief. The belief that they can beat the big nations in major tournaments and are good enough to win them. Southgate doesn't have the personality to do that. As Martin said about Brian Clough, it wasn't necessarily what he said, but how he said it. Martin could give us that belief, and I think with the level of talent we have available it could be enough to get us over the line.

You can be a great number 2, but that doesn't mean your going to be great number 1. Look at Steve McClaren & Pep Lijnders for examples two smart guys as assistant managers but awful managers.

To be fair Ireland at this time were awful and old players without any youth coming through setup since England took our two best ones of Declan Rice & Jack Grealish.
