샘. 레고 하는데 5살 아들에게 '한칸 뒤에 꽂아'라고 하고 싶은데 '한칸'이라는 말을 어떻게 하면 될까요? Put it on One bump backwards? Move back one bump? 아 모르겠어요. ㅋㅋㅋ Anybody who can help me?

@@user-xn4mj1wl5r 칸 하면 bin이 먼저 떠오르는데 그것은 좀 어색하고, space 나 row/column 이 무난하겠습니다. Why don't you move it back by one space? Snap it in one row farther back toward you. Move it over by two columns to the right of you.

저는 이렇게 이해했습니다. 화자가 말하려고 하는 주제( 한 번에 할 수 있는 일의 갯수 , 아이와 보내는 시간의 양) 에 대해 다른 사람들이 부정적인 생각을 가질 수 있습니다. 하지만 화자는 이를 부정적으로 생각하지 않거나 옹호/변명하려고 합니다. 그래서 긍정문을 써서 표현하는 거죠. 다만 그게 절대적으로 최선이 아닌 것은 아니까 이 표현을 써서 가능한 범위에서의 최선이라는 의미를 전달하는 거죠. 지금 할 수 있는 것은 can only (do) 그 정도야 so many/much. 이렇게요. 부정문이 아니라 긍정문을 사용한 의미를 한 번 살려봤습니다 ^^

예전에 빨모샘께서 이 표현 첨 가르쳐주셨을 때 굉장히 기억에 남았었는데, 그새 또 까먹었었네요 ㅠㅠ 30년째 영어공부중이지만, 풍부한 예문과 실제 내 입으로 내뱉는 연습의 중요성은 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않다는 걸 다시 한 번 느낍니다. 선생님, 감사합니다!

정말 새로운 표현이네요 그냥 봤으면 반대로 해석하고 뭐지??했을 것 같은데 선생님 덕분에 배워갑니다 여기서 so가 “그렇게, 그 정도로”의 의미로 쓰이고 only와 함께니까 ”그 정도밖에”가 된다고 생각하니까 전 좀 와닿네요 정말 감사해요! 저도 예문 하나 만들어볼게요^^ Since they are still immature they can only show so much patience. 처음에 채널 보고 우와 완전 신세계!!! 감동했다가 요즘엔 자주 못왔는데 매일 와야겠어요. Thank you so much again! :)

1. 연습 - You can only understand so much about my feeling. -> you can understand little about my feeling. - They had only so much time to do it. -> They had little time to do it. - They are only so kind to explain that. -> They are not so kind to explain it. 2. 개인정리 - only + so much, long... : only 한계가 있음 so much 많아봤자 -> 결과적으로 조금만/약간만/little, not much - so를 little로 생각? - only를 not으로 생각?

"A man can only take so much." so much 가 영 감이 안왔는데, 제가 요즘 꽂혀서 보고있는 티비쇼 "Castle" 시즌 4 15화에서 이 so much 가 나오는데 단박에 이해되더군요. CIA와 우연히 협업하게 되어 동료들에게 비밀에 부칠 일이 많아진 형사 Beckett이 "I'm sorry. I can't tell." 하고 입을 다물자 부하인 Esposito가 째려보면서 "A man can only take so much." 라고 내뱉습니다. 와! 단박에 느낌 옵니다. 우리가 "사람이 참는데도 한계가 있어!" 라고 할때랑 똑같은 분위기 말투예요. 그래서 샘 영상으로 다시 돌아와 공부를 하고 나니 이제 이해가 잘 됩니다. 샘 최고예요!

So much, so many, so long 을 아주 많은.. 보다는 어느 특정한 정도의 ‘양’, ‘시간’..? 으로 의역해 보니까 이해가 잘 되네요. 오직 어느 정도의 양만 .. 할 수 있다. 결국 한계가 있다.. 그런 식으로요.. 항상 좋은 표현 감사합니다!

CAN ONLY + SO MANY/MUCH 1. I can only stand so many things 2. I tasted your coffee and most of the time it was good. But I think I can only taste so many flavors in your coffee these days. 3. I've been practicing how to play soccer these days and one of my friends is teaching me now. But sometimesI I feel he can only teach me so many soccer skills at a time. 4. We've been under quarantine period these days, so it's kind of hard for us to wake up early in the morning as usual. And sometimes I think officers can only watch so many of us during a schedule. 5. What I learned from my life was that we can only love so many girls at the same time. 6. Don't eat too much even if you're plannig to bulk up. You can only take so much nutrients at a time. 7. I think it's not a good idea to pull an all-nighter to study for your midterm. You can only remember so many things. (There's a limit to how many you can remember.) 8. From what I understand, what he's saying is that he can only do so much loads of work when he's working in our office. 9. OK. She's the one who's looked down on us from all the way up there? But I bet that she can only do handle so many things without our cooperation. 10. We're running out of battery, and what's worse is we only got so much time now. 11. I'm afraid we can only provide you with so many services at once. 12. Imagine this guy just popped of the a box that looks like an ice cream. There's so little you can do about that. (You can only do much about that if it was you.) 13. Jazz is completely different from all the other music genres. It's all about those improvisations, call-and-response, and notes that resonate each other in an unexpected way. As for other genres, you can only pay attention to much of its notes.

좋은 강의 감사합니다~~ 어감에 익숙해지려고 한참 듣다 보니, 저희 말에서 떠오르는 비슷한 문형이 “~해봤자 ~ 정도다/~밖에 안 된다” 인데 영어로도 같은 어감이 맞을까요? There is only so many hours in a day 하루에 시간이 많아 봐야 얼마 안 된다

As far as I know, this expression was the very first one that you mentioned in the quiz for members. Since I was using this expression a lot in Korean, I thought this was one of the very good expressions for me. But, I found it difficult to perfectly understand the structure. I'd say, this was one of the top 3 expressions in your lectures I couldn't get used to. So, I had looked it up online and watched several different lectures. It took me over 2 years to start being able to use this expression when I talk. But today, I realized there can be much more applications in daily life than I'd thought.

도움이 될까 하여 이것도 올려 봅니다. can only do 의 와 같은 용법으로 쓰인 다음과 같은 예문을 보면 좀 더 도움이 될지도 모르겠습니다. If you as whisper the name, you will be condemned for life. 이 문장에서도 의 so는 이란 말이 아니고 라는 뜻의 단어이며, "whisper the name"을 가리키는 so입니다. 그래서 '라는 한계 (limit)을 가리키고 있는 것이지요. 그래서 ' 당신은 죽을 때까지 저주를 받을 것이다.'라는 말이지요.

Kevin 님의 댓글을 읽고 작문 연습 겸 다음과 같이 의역하여 옮겨 보았습니다. If I remember correctly, this expression was the first in the quiz given to members. I often used a Korean phrase that means the same thing, so I worked very hard to understand this expression and its construction. I would say this expression was one of the three most difficult expressions I've had a lot of trouble understanding. So, to understand it better, I searched the web and watched numerous videos linked to this expression. It took me over two years before I could use this expression in my conversations. Today, I learned that there is so much more to this expression than I had previously realized.

저는 “only 동사” 를 “제한적으로 동사하다” 이렇게 접수해서 이해하니 좀더 가깝게 다가오더라구요 예를들어 I can only spend so much time with my son. 나는 제한적으로 보낼수 있다/ 그렇게 많은 시간을 / 아들과 함께. 즉, 아들과 그정도로 많은 시간을 보내는 내 행동에 제한을 두는거죠. 이걸 부정으로 바꾼달지 혹은 문장에는 없는 limit을 넣고 같이 생각하려니 저는 아득해져서.. 그래도 가장 중요한건 선생님께서 말씀하시는 반복하고 반복, 그대로 흡수될때까지 시간을 들이는 방법이 완성이겠죠. 감사합니다.

If you just watch a lot of youtube videos regarding programming, you can only use so many real programming skills for your job. The IT industry is changing so fast so if you just study with some books about programming, you can only get so much brand-new information about it. 좀 어렵지만 제 나름대로 다음과 같이 생각해봤어요! can only … so much (그저) 할 수 있다 … (딱) 그 정도만치 You can only expect so much from someone who has never done it before 한 번도 해 보지 않은 사람으로부터는 단지 그 만큼까지만 기대해 볼 수 있다.

i can only be so picky on food. i should definitely work on it. i have noticed that people at work find it uncomfortable when deciding what to eat. i can only be so understanding about how people in different countries live. i can only look on the positive side so long. it can only be so bad. i have no idea what i should do with this all. i hope you know a person can only put up with so much. i can only understand so much about what you are going through, but i can tell how bad it seems.

[연습] I love my kids and I want to look out for them, but they have grown a lot and they are growing. I can only be so involved in their life. 나는 우리 아이들은 사랑하고 그들을 지켜주고 싶어요. 하지만 그들은 많이 컸고 계속 더 클 거예요. 내가 그들의 삶에 끝없이 관여할 수는 없는 거예요. Sometimes I feel my family thinks I look like a wonder woman. I try to do my best, but I can only do so many things at the same time. 간혹 우리 가족들은 나를 원더우먼인줄 아는 것 같아요. 최선을 다해보고 있긴 하지만, 동시에 할 수 있는 일에는 한계가 있는데 말이지요. I have a strong mentality but my body can only handle so much stress. 나는 정신력이 강해요. 하지만 내몸이 견딜 수 있는 스트레스에는 한계가 있어요. I had a full-time job. I could only spend so much time with my kids. Recently, I changed my job to a part-time job. Now I can spend enough time with my kids. 저는 풀타임 직업이 있었어요. 아이들과 함께 보낼 수 있는 시간에는 한계가 있었어요. 최근에 파트타임 직업으로 옮겼어요. 이제 나는 아이들과 충분한 시간을 보낼 수 있어요. My family really loves the food I cook. So we hardly eat out, and I usually enjoy cooking for my family. The only bad thing for me is each of my family members has a different taste. I try to do my best to keep everyone happy. But I can only make so many kinds of foods to keep everyone happy. 가족들은 제가 만든 음식을 정말 좋아해요. 그래서 우리는 외식을 잘 하지 않아요. 그리고 나는 보통 가족을 위해 요리하는 것을 즐기고요. 단 하나 나쁜 점은 우리 가족은 모두 각자 다른 입맛을 가졌다는 것이에요. 내가 모두를 만족시킬 음식을 만드는데는 한계가 있잖아요.

여기서 so는 그러한의 뜻으로 문맥에 한계를 보여주는 connotation이 앞뒤로 보통 존재하는 것 같아요. '단지 그런 정도밖에' 로 해석하면 이해가 빠를듯도 하네요. 감사합니다.

1.보는것만으로는 배우는데 한계가 있다. I can only learn so much by watching. 2.식이요법으로만으로는 살을 빼는데 한계가 있다. I can only lose so musch weight by dieting.

I viewed myself as a dedicated student in my teens. I signed up for(enrolled in) several private cram schools and cut down on my sleep hours. However, there's only so much sleep. I think I failed to maintain the intense life because I also wanted to keep a good relationship with my partner. At the same time, I realized I can only focus on so many things. Eventually I ended up missing the two values, studies and love,which is a shame.

I just started this server job a week ago. I can only handle so many orders at the same time. 새로운 표현이라 문장이 바로바로 만들어지지 않네욥. 연습을 많이 해야겠어요!

이 구문에서 “only” 가 “hardly or rarely” 처럼 부정의 “not” 의 대체물로 쓰인다고 이해해도 될까요? 그럼 왠지 더 쉽게 이해될 거 같아요 there’s a limit to 로 대체하는 것 보다.

저도 이거 처음에는 받아 들이기 어려웠는데, only를 제한된다라는 의미로 받아 들이면 뒤에 so much, so long 같은 것들이 그렇게 많이 ~ 하는 것이 제한된다.=>한계가 있다. 이렇게 연결되어서 좀 더 쉽게 받아들여졌어요. 어쨌든 원어민이 저렇게 많이 쓰는 구나 생각하고 계속 말하는 연습을 하니까 좀 더 쉽게 다가가게 되는 것 같아요.

진짜 입에 안붙어서 남기고 가요 😂 you can only 동사/ 에서 한번 끊고 이해하니까 좀 와닿는것같아요 The human is not God. As a doctor, you can only save so many lives. During the final exam period, you can only have so many hours to study. That's your job, not for us. we can only do so many things.

I can only wear mask for so long time. ( = I need some fresh air. There is a limit to wearing mask for so long time.) 3) I think it is time to slowly seize growing physically and to try to be mature. I can only grow physically for so long time since I have entered 30s. ( = I think it is time for me to focus on maturing rather than growing physically because I am now thirty years old.)

한국말의 반어법 같기도하고, only가 문장을 한정하는것같기도하고, 정말 와 닿지는 않지만~ 많은 예문들을 보도록해야겠어요. 물론 입으론 중얼거리면서요.ㅎㅎ 😊

You are a new hire this month. You can only do so many things perfectly from the beginning. So You don't need to worry so much about mistakes you made. You are going to get a little better each time you try it. 너는 이번 달에 온 신입사원이야. 처음부터 많은 걸 완벽하게 하기에는 한계가 있지. 그래서 실수했던 거에 너무 걱정하지 않아도 돼. 하면 할수록 조금 더 나아질거야. I prefer donuts. But that doesn't neccessarily mean I eat them every meal. I can only eat so many them in a day. 나는 도넛을 좋아한다. 근데 꼭 그렇다고 해서 매 끼니에 먹는 것은 아니다. 하루에 먹을 수 있는 도넛에는 한계가 있다. She has a hard time breathing. 저도 처음에 only so much/many 알았을땐 좀 충격받고 에이 설마 이렇게 쓰겠어? 했는데 한번 알고나니까 원어민들이 진짜 많이 쓰는게 들리더라구요ㅋㅋㅋ

제가 느끼기엔 여기서 so much의 의미는 ’ 그렇게 많이‘의 의미보다는 ‘그정도, 그렇게~ 그만큼의 (양, 갯수, 정도)의 의미인것 처럼 보여요. 직역은 ‘오직~ 그렇게 많이’ 이건데 이걸 의역해서 ’~하는데 한계가 있다‘로 연결시키라고 하면 일반적인 한국인 입장에선 더 어렵고 정말 무리일거예요ㅎㅎ only~ so much를 ‘그만큼만 할수 있다’로 이해하면 훨씬 쉬운것 같아요. so=그렇게, much=만큼으로 이해하는거죠. They can only be so understanding=그들은 그만큼만 이해할수 있다. 즉, 그들이 이해하는데는 한계가 있다. so much에서 so를 보통 ’너무‘ 정도로 해석하지만 이 경우엔 약간 that much 같은 맥락으로 이해하면 쉬운것 같아요. ㅎㅎ
