Many of us photographers complain that Instagram is all about reels and girls. So, how can photographers still use Instagram? Here's what I do.

“Come together” on social media … perfect! So far I’ve resisted all social media platforms except for my YT sailing channel but have always thought Insta might be interesting for my photography and this has given me some food for thought … many thanks! 📷🙂

That is an interesting way to see Instagram of helping you edit and critique your own photographs. And only following accounts that do photography. Going to go and try it and thanks for another great video!

This was a good overview of Instagram. I don't use it although I do follow some people. I never knew how to post anything until I followed what you did. Very helpful. I may start to engage it more. I like your take on it.

Once again Arri great content and thankyou . Sadly given the dire times we find ourselves in YT and IG are a good source of news that mainstream media overlook. To just limit myself to photography (which I'd dearly love to do) leaves me in a difficult situation because I need to know what our government is doing and offer support where I can to others. Currently ashamed to be British is all I'm going to say here. That said I seek refuge in all matters photography and get pleasure , learning and enjoyment from engaging with people like yourself.

But hey, you can have multiple accounts. Make yourself an Insta account for photography only, and do not let anything else in it. And then, another account for your other activities ....

Very vise words about instagram, the best thing about photography is the interaction between photographsers on or offline AND there's always something new to learn or draw inspiration from.

A gallery manager where I was showing suggested I try Instagram to share my work (as she does), so I thought, why not? Although it's not without compromise (the images don't that great, especially compared to prints), it's better than nothing (and free). So far, it's my only social media outlet and I use it exclusively to post photos. As you suggest, it may be helpful to expand my usage to communicate with other photographers, so i'll have to look into that. I should probably follow more photographers as well (although only shooting film doesn't necessarily mean better quality images, so I wouldn't limit myself in that regard), but thanks for the tips to refine what you see--so much clutter out there! I also downloaded an app called Vero, but have yet to really explore that. p.s., nice theme and variations on Come Together--after viewing this I went to my studio to play for a couple of hours last night.

Very accurate analysis. It is not only on Instagram that we ' photographers ' loose out to ' Russian Super Models ' but it is also true of Y.T. Some of the channels involving ' photography ' with high viewing figures, likes and subscribers are channels that lets say have very little photographic content of merit but are full of attractive scantily dressed young ladies being photographed, and when the photographer itself is a young attractive scantily dressed one, then the figures go through the roof. Sadly my landscape, or meloncholy cityscape photography stands no chance. Thank you.

Good. I hope you like it! To me, it didn't provide anything that Instagram would not. So, I stopped posting ... but if it works for you, why not.

Totally on the same page. As a 'not for profit' B+W film photographer I only post my good images and I try to collate the gallery in threes so with every three postings there is a balance with the images. I don't post similar images together and interesting posting better images less often seems to be better for me. Yes IG does stimulate me to create. Cheers!

You have a good point: we should think about Instagram as a gallery -- not as individual images. Like you, posting groups of pictures!

This reminds me, do you have the option on your Threads acount to share to the fediverse yet? There's a decent analogue photography community brewing over there. From what I know it's just one setting on your side, then those of us over there can follow you (and interact with your posts I think).
@ShootOnFilm2 ай бұрын
I’m on Threads but have not yet found a proper use for it. Also, you really need to work hard blocking people for it not to become a garbage bin.

You confirm my intuition. But I separated my use of social media a bit: Instagram is only for photography, previously there was Flickr, but it set an economic barrier for me. I use Facebook in general, i.e. to maintain contact with friends, including photography, sailing and shipbuilding groups, but I have not avoided politics, especially over the last 8 years, when populists were in power in Poland. And my KZfaq is for sailing and photography. Regards 😀

Oh, I still have an account on Lomography, but I don't find it convenient to post photos there, so I've stopped my activity there for now - if Instagram messes up something, I'll run to Lomography. And also, Facebook, or rather its algorithm, gives me a lot of good photographs and photographers, and recently also Treads.

very nice point of view, I heard that Insta doesn't like it when you cut and paste the same hashtags as you did in the video, any comments regarding that?
@ShootOnFilm2 ай бұрын
Thanks thanks --- yeah, I would not know what they like or not like. It's not that important. Somebody also said to me that hashtags won't work anymore. But with my three goals: cadence, learn from others, talk to others -- it really doesn't matter! :-)

You may be right. But, my claim was that it is not at all about getting exposure. You don't need exposure. You need to post: that forces you to improve your game. You need to follow good photographers. You don't need exposure for that. And finally, you can reach out to people whose work inspires you -- and once again, you don't need exposure. Forget Instagram as an exposure. It's not going to work!

Hey Yuri, sorry if this is off-topic for your video. With Photoshop’s new AI image generator set to outshine digital cameras, I think we’re heading towards a world where photos fall into two camps: real and digital. Film, with its tangible proof, is like the hipster of photography. Personally, I’m all about analog because a photo’s worth isn’t just in the now but in decades after. Plus, when Martians eventually crash our party on Earth, film will be the ultimate “we were here” postcard they can hold with their 2x3 fingers.

I also filter the posts on my Instagram just to other photographers and I agree that it becomes like an "art gallery" for me. However, I dislike Instagram's restrictions on aspect ratio and image size. Getting used to a few picture formats and 1080p might be detrimental for our true appreciation of photography. Nothing replaces a big, rich and detailed image on a 34" screen or on paper. Just my two cents... Cheers!
@ShootOnFilm2 ай бұрын
I totally agree with low resolution. But aspect ratio -- that I don't let Instagram change and affect. I post only what I choose and ensure Instagram cannot change my aspect ratios.

I tried to like IG…twice…but couldn’t get there so I deleted my account. My issues?1) That it is smartphone centric. I don’t use my iPhone for the socials, I use my iPad. Upsized iPhone apps don’t cut it on an iPad. 2) The way photos are displayed…can’t stand it. The forced 4:5 crop on portrait orientation photos. The tiny view of landscape orientation photos. The lack of an easy to use zoom functionality.

These are all true. That is one reason I push all my photos through Snapseed and make them squares leaving enough white around.

Never understood the follower desire or they just can't enjoy Instagram thing. Instagram is a wonderful journal of my day, my week, and my weekends. It is a random mess of photography 😂. The followers who choose to follow me and like my random photos are just a plus. Despite that mess it has still gotten me a few portrait side jobs without even trying or caring.

If you are trying to sell stuff via IG, there are professionals uploading several hundred posts every day. So it's already a lost game as saturated it has become. Upload photos just as your catalogue to potential customers and fans, an easy access showcase book. Nothing else. Full stop. There's too much you don't have control over with this kind of SOME channel. save your energy I would say. Keep it simple.
@ShootOnFilm2 ай бұрын
Sure. But that's not at all what I want to do with Instagram.
