Additionally, the University of Helsinki surveyed 16,475 households of raw feeders from 81 countries in 2019. 99.6% of the raw feeding households did not report any pathogens being transmitted from raw food to humans. Whenever someone asks me "but what about bacteria?" I just say "your cat licks his butt after he poops" lol. And in addition to bacteria recalls on kibble, you also have to worry about harmful drugs, toxic/deficient levels of nutrients, plastic choking hazards, deadly mold, and the list goes on.

My dog got sick (vomiting/soft stools) recently and the vet was quick to blame his food, esp the fact he’d had a raw meaty bone. But as it turned out it was most likely something at the local park that had made him sick; he and another dog both ate dirt from the same hole and were both throwing up. If I hadn’t contacted the other owner to confirm her poor dog was sick too, I’d have been left thinking it was his dinner that made him sick.

I fed my pup raw for a few years and unfortunately she DID come down with salmonellosis. The infection even attacked her joints to the point that at first, they thought she had lyme or anaplasmosis. This occurred after I picked her up from a boarding kennel. I believe they did not handle her food appropriately (leaving it out, thawing it too soon, etc.). Watching her unable/unwilling to move was gut wrenching. As a result, her primary meals are gently cooked for now. However, I give her a raw sardine, chicken wing, or turkey neck a couple times a week still. I love this channel, and hope it takes off. I am sure with its support I'll come back around to fully raw meals :)

Thanks! Considering feeding my cat at least a raw meal a day. Gave her once a raw chicken heart and she took it from her plate and hide to eat it if as she had catched her pray.

If your dog does gets sick, don’t freak out. One of mine got sick from fish oil that turned rancid (my fault). Puked 🤮 all over the place. I simply had her fast for 24 hours and the gave her some of her veggie mix (probiotics) afterwards. Farts smelled like crazy. The other dogs were farting up a storm as well, but did better. Taught me a lesson. I can only keep fish oil around for a couple months even if it is refrigerated. Fasting does a lot for dogs (24-48 hours). Just make sure they have access to water. Point is, we may make a mistake when feeding a fresh diet, but I don’t think there are the dangers like aflatoxin, mycotoxin, Vitamin D overdose, melamine being snuck into the synthetic vitamin mix....all of these have led to serious animal deaths and sickness with kibble.

Hi! thank you sooo much for sharing all this info and helping us all better educate ourselves! Im wondering if its possible to mix raw and kibble feeding? Im thinking of transitioning as i already add lots of whole food toppers to their meals and as treats daily. I am really interested in diving deeper into BARF feeding. Do you think it would be okay to do half and half? or feed kibble some days? Mostly so that if they ever have to eat kibble for occasional convenience with traveling or pet sitting, it wont be so drastic to a full raw diet. Ive found contradicting info online (like with everything lol) and im wondering if mixed feeding is a thing, or at least occasional mixed feeding. (1 lab, 2 weims and 1 rottie!!!)

Regarding your advice to not leave the raw meat in room temperature for too long, preferably less than 30 mins, I would like to ask, most of the fresh meat sold in markets are mostly cuts and put in room temperature/ not in freezing storage for few hours or more. Isn’t that post a risk of high salmonella contamination? Would it be safe to still feed in raw to pet? Noted from google that subsequent freezing in freezer doesn’t really kill salmonella but just to put it into hibernation. Can you please advise on this?

I am getting a puppy soon and the recipe im using for when he goes fully raw is 2.75 oz of ground beef, 1 oz chicken wings, .5 oz beef heart, .5 oz pork kidney, .75 oz beef liver, 1.75 oz canned sardines, .5 oz canned oysters, 1 oz kale, 1 oz spinach, one organic egg, 1 drop of maxxiomega(vitaim oil and fish oil) and 1/2 scoop solid gold (kelp). He is a cockapoo and should be about 25 pounds as an adult, do you think this is good or should I add more or less?

Thanks for the content! i got 2 dogs a 5yo female jack russell and a GSD (also fostering a frenchie for few months to help a family member) all of which have been eating high quality kibble like Acana/Naturea etc and some raw (beef veggies bones etc) but never Chicken because even though everyone says its 'kinda' safe im still stuck in my ways and fears! i mean i see the facts about them being able to handle raw chicken and salmonella but im always worried about their saliva afterwards.. their paws and stuff. i mean if for example they eat Raw chicken and then fetch,, is that tennis ball ok to be at home? or if she licks/touches stuff is there a chance of getting it exposed to salmo? I already know the answer without needing to watch - ALL types of predatory carnivores are necessarily immune to salmonella, e-coli, and all other intestinal microflora inhabiting their natural prey ... if they werent, then eating their prey would kill them, which is utterly absurd if you think about it. Bottom line: salmonella is only an issue for us humans, NOT for cats or dogs, or any obligate carnivore for that matter.

Do you have a video specific to puppies? Can I feed a puppy a balanced NRC guideline diet with all the nutrients/vitamins needed. I want to go by the body weight calculation so feeding 3% of his ideal body weight in 2-3 meals a day.

My dog finally ate a whole ptey and it wasnt from me. It rained hard for a day and gophers drowned and where laying in the field and before i noticed my dog was munching on one and swallowed. :0 at least they were fresh so i wasn't too worried but i was surprised.

I have looked in to raw food for my dogs, but, how the hell can people afford to feed them that way? I feed my dogs a high quality no grain dry dog food with a little bit of wet food mixed in to it. All of my dogs have been over 13 years of age and never been seriously sick. Beautiful shiny coats and great teeth. I’m not against raw food, but....it’s not easy on the wallet to say it like that.

Generally love your channel and really appreciate your time and energy given to this subject. However I found your chart on pounds of food recalled to be misleading in that it did not provide enough context to allow real comparison. I am sure the numbers are valid - however it is just poundage recalled without the context of total poundage sold. We all know that less people feed raw - so I would expect the poundage of raw food recalled to be much lower. The question is "Was raw food recalled at a higher or lower rate than kibble when adjusted to show percentage recalled of to the amount sold?" For instance for every 1000 lbs. sold how many pounds were recalled? While I am sure that you did not intend to be biased, stats that lack enough context to be understood just come across as propaganda. Your videos are so thoughtfully done and watcher friendly. I would just hate to have someone show this to their vet and have the vet correctly point our the missing context.

We went from grain-free kibble to regular kibble and now raw. I feel like it’s a healthy increase train.

So, I started my 10 month old cat on partially raw when he was about 6 months. He is thriving; healthy shiny coat, muscles, all of it. I've been giving him chicken breast cubes and am very cautious about handling it. I recently bought him some breast and choppped it up in his dinner. He had mucusy poop and threw up almost 10 hrs later, all the food intact. He threw up again in the morning, was weak and not intrested in his favorite canned food which is verry unlike him. I have no doubt it's salmonella. I know you're are not a vet, but how could this happen to him? I feel so guilty for giving him the chicken, it was freshly bout, smelled and looked perfect, and I washed everything.
