I've had Ts lose their fangs in a bad molt and it was a nightmare feeding them. I'd have to wear gloves, hold the tarantula on its back, and basically shove pre-mushed up bugs into their tiny little mouth. It was stressful for both me and the poor spider. The thought that some people might INTENTIONALLY defang their Ts really upsets me :(

see Marks Tarantula for better ways. he cuts the pray so it cant get away and T can just suck on the cut area. It been working very well as his T named Fang has been growing steady every since.

Lizard Teeth excuse me for being a dummy on this subject I'm not a spider fan but I don't kill them on purpose, and I've just newly became fascinated by this hobby that some of the youtubers have, so question, would the t be able to grow new fangs back at the next molting? I know really dumb question but I really do want to know! Cheers!

Mhairie Lee They do / can grow back with moulting, however I am not sure of the length of time, or of the number of shedding it would take for one completely missing fang to regrow. I am not sure if it's 100% guaranteed, either, to disclaimer my own comment.

I love how your rosehair was so cooperative throughout the video. Usually in your videos there's a bit of bolting, attacking, "You can't see it because it's hiding," and the occasional "Oh no it escaped." But in this video, your tarantula went above and beyond in terms of behavior; it even crawled to the top of the tank and held the super worm for a minute instead of doing a crazy tackle, almost like it knew it was part of an educational demonstration. How cute!

Your Rose-hair is always a delight to see. She's climbs up and is all "oh hello there, would you like some tea?" The gentleness of the feeding is such a strong contrast compared to your other species who are all varying degrees of "EHRMEGERD FOOD ALERT" and/or furious-threat-mode

It is weird and isn't right unless those teeth are in unsaveable condition. You can throw all the excuses out there, but that doesn't justify taking something they use on the daily for no *good* reason. No reason is good enough.

Dustin Hoornaert You can still feed them so they won't starve. Mark on Marks Tarantulas has one that a friend gave him. I believe it broke it's fangs on the tongs he was using to feed it. It seems to be doing quite well last I heard. He's waiting for her to molt. She's an a geniculata he's named Fang :). But yea, I agree, it's animal abuse..

I think when it comes to removing parts of animals the general rule of thumb is to just leave it alone, if you can keep it as a pet then it is probably harmless or at least docile towards humans it bonds with, no need to take away teeth, fangs, claws etc.

Harleydaplayer I'm not sure how you would remove a tarantula's hair, but if you did I imagine it wouldn't be beneficial. So yes, it's definitely possible to remove hair from a tarantula but then again it's also possible to commit murder and skin kittens. Don't try it.

INTPguy11 Pulling a blade across a tarantula isn't wise. Even before you pull out the razor you'd have to consider the shaving cream, most chemicals are nothing but toxic for creatures that small, both to inhale and directly ingest.

As far as im aware, they dont only need to inject their venom to subdue the prey, the venom also digest the prey outside their bodies. So defanging a tarantula would kind of be equivalent to removing all of a humans teeth and their stomach. That doesnt sound nice.

I think you get these questions because it is possible to remove the fangs and/or venom glands of snakes. Unfortunately, people aren't usually aware of the massive anatomical differences between vertebrates and arthropods. In venomous snakes, the fangs and venom aren't too important to their ability to eat if they're being fed pre-killed prey. With spiders, their fangs are HOW they eat, so removing them would be like removing a vertebrate's lower jaw.

Exactly! Their venom not only paralyzes their prey, but also dissolve then, without it they would not only be defenseless, but would also die from starvation.

Question: Why are some tarantulas so colorful and others very well camouflaged? Is it like bugs where the bright colors are a warning to stop them being eaten or is it for something else like attracting a mate etc? (I'm guessing the camo colors are just to help them hide and hunt prey etc)

i3su _ Its hard to say, science still isnt quite sure about the answer to that question yet. At first they thought the bright colors were for reproductive purposes but as we all know tarantulas have poor eye sight. On further study scientists found that in some tarantula the bright blue colors on the spiders arent that of which you'd see on say a green leaf or pink flamingo. They are "precisely arranged nanocrystals" that apartly act as a mirror to reflect all incoming light except a certain wavelength that just so happens to be blue. As to why the spiders are colorful we dont know yet

ELITE SAIYAN lol its fine its all just speculation, although i pulled my information from national geographic. Some tarantulas generate a different hue of blue then others based on the arrangment of those nano crystals. I think the blue is generated BECAUSE they have poor eyesight. Think about it, its probably hard to find a camouflaged mate with poor eyesight. The vibrant colors could be used for that?

If you own an animal and consider any kind of mutilation that isn't for a medical reason (this includes tail docking, declawing/fanging and ear cutting!). You should not be owning that animal. Humans are the worst. I love your videos by the way dude!

I have a Kelpie he was born as a short tail puppy. I had some idiot accuse me of docking him which id never do she tried to tell me I was lying and that I probably did it myself with a rubber band, I almost broke her nose at that comment.

Myuutsuu85 it only takes some rudimentary knowledge of spiders in general to know that they use thier fangs and venom for digesting thier food so someone would literally have to know basically 0 about spiders to think defanging wouldn't be an entirely terrible idea.

You can handle them without tongs, just not recommended especially with old worlds.

As far as I know he doesn't handle his T's. It's a bit risky, T's are not really predictable, even if one is usually docile. Some have potent venom, so a bite could be very painful . It's also dangerous for the T if one shook them off for example. They can die from falling more than a few feet.

Ts are rather predictable though. If you know the habits of the specie then you if it can be handled just fine. As long as you are calm and pick up a docile specie you could.

Rom Kin true, I meant you cant read them as easy as a cat or dog . They have no facial expressions or body language we are well used to . And though some species are known to be usually docile there is no guarantee, even if a T is calm one minute she could feel threatened the next. For example the conmon rose hair is often said to be very docile, then people explain how theirs is the opposite and others in the other hand feel the need to proove how their T. is the sweetest, calmest T ever....And no one is completely wrong..But with so many variables I would not want to risk it not only for my health but also for the T.

I've got a question. Can an enclosure be too big for a tarantula?

AMAZING HOTPOCKET in my experience, yes. For example a 1 inch tarantula is given an enclosure that is lets say to wide. Not much height just very spacious. Usually a tarantula's movements is patterned, your tarantula may like that certain space in the enclosure and may choose to stay their most of the time so the extra space bcomes useless. In short a t enclo is too big if there is too much space for movement and too small if too little space for movement

Yes he has answered this in another video. If an enclosure is too big for a tarantula then the tarantula can become stressed. I cannot pinpoint the exact video he mentioned that in but I do remember him saying that.

I haven't been in the hobby too long but I feel like it don't really matter the enclosure size as long as they have some cork bark they can comfortably hide in they should be fine. There are no boundaries in the wild. Also I feel a little extra space in the enclosure helps when you need to water or maintenance your enclosure. That gives them room to move away from the area you need to service. I have 2 poecilotheria with bigger enclosures and they have yet to threat posture or bolt. I actually handled them a few times. Not saying bigger enclosures are better than small. Just saying that with proper setup it should not be the end of the world

Dude, I can answer the gloves question. If you're talking about thin latex gloves then no, the tarantulas would get straight through them. But a thick leather glove/ winter glove, then almost no tarantula could get through that.

Some Tarantulas can be very, very fast so they could run up your head in no time if they get spooked, this should at lest be considered, especially with Old world T's which also have more potent venom. Most venom won't do major damage but some T's have potent venom which not only hurts pretty bad and can require medical attention. So it's best to do a lot of research when someone wants to get one and always handle them with care.

You don't have to do much if you're bitten. See if you can press some of the venom out and run the wound under some warm water. Sometimes it can get very uncomfortable, cause muscle twitches, or joint stiffness near the area that does require a trip to the doctor. It depends on how much venom is injected and how potent the venom of that species is. Many commonly kept tarantula bites are compared to having a bee sting, as far as venom goes. If a person is allergic to insects such as bees, it is possible they are also allergic to tarantula venom. Most of the serious reactions to tarantula bites are allergy related.

I'm always excited to learn as much as you can teach on the old world Ts Here in Aus my selection is pretty limited, but I've decided perhaps the Phlogious Goliath would be the best T to start with... but still looking to learn as much as i can about them, or old worlds like them, that i can before i take the plunge and get one

Hi Exotics! I'm new to the channel and really love it! watch the dark den on his foolproof rehousing method, if the tarantula is big just scale it up. if you can, simply put the old enclosure in the new enclosure, open the lid, and let it come out on its own

I checked this video because a guy i work with said he had a Cobalt blue that was defanged n I called bullshit - this video really cleared it up for me, i knew it would be mental, cruel and life threatening to defang anything - thank you for making the video, there are people out there stupid enough to think about defanging things so I hope they all see this video too

There aren't any tarantulas that are lethal to an adult human. Some will make you very ill and can put you in the hospital though.

Do you have any T's that eat everyday? My P.ornata won't stop eating lol after he molted, I gave him 1male and 1female b.lateralis. then 1male everyday since then. He hasn't denied a roach since it molted

Have you tried taking a brush (that is used for painting on paper) and "brushing" or "petting" your tarantulas? I have seen some keepers do it, and I wonder if tarantulas actually enjoy it or not.

Is keeping tarentulas illegal in some countries ? Does a cobalt blue, a pumpkin (idk the exact name) or a spider all red with black legs (i don't remember either) are good for beginners ?

Agreed with everything you said, and in my opinion I think if anyone has a tarantula and had it defanged then you don't deserve to have them. It's cruel to remove them as it's crucial they obviously need them!!!! As every keeper should have insight on a tarantulas care, am sure they know to be careful and know how to look after them properly.
