The Sony LSPX Glass speaker is their most unique Bluetooth speaker with its candlelight shape appearance and glass tweeter. The sound is relatively decent, but it's probably one of the most aesthetically pleasing speakers we've seen so far.

Chemist here. Glass is typically composed of long chains of silica. Plastics are long chains of carbon. Organic, think organic chemistry, is just another way of referring to the chemistry of carbon. I bet they just came up with the fancy title of "organic glass" for marketing purposes. Shocking. I know.

They had a google search explanation. The organic part of the name comes from the reason you stated, and the "glass" part comes from the fact that it's more of an amorphous crystal of small organic chains of some particular plastic. It's still generous to name it glass to a layman, although glass in general is still a substance we kinda just shrug our shoulders at with regards to its material class.

A little explanation behind the "glass" tube: High frequencies are extremely directional, often times as low as a 30 degree dispersion angle. So for any tweeter, anyone just a little off to the side will clearly hear that the speaker is not pointed at them. The lower the frequencies go, the wider the natural dispersion of the frequencies, so a single bass driver firing down can disperse evenly around the speaker. With the glass tube, it will (theoretically) disperse the high frequencies in a 360 degree radius. Pretty neat idea if you want to evenly disperse sound into a room and have it sound pretty even in all directions. Judging by the performance. I have a feeling that the tube being basically plastic kinda absorbed a lot of the high frequencies instead of dispersing them. My guess would be that glass would perform better.
@YOEL_44
@YOEL_44 2 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't a cone pointing to the tweeter do the job just fine, without having to enclose the sound and preventing distortion?
@sabahaddinarslan2927

@@YOEL_44 Definitely. Like others have said the whole glass tube tweeter thing is just marketing
@johngogo17
@johngogo17 2 жыл бұрын
@@YOEL_44 Yes and no. You kind of describe a particular type of horn design used for high frequency drivers, by they are still very directional at shorter distances. Typically horns are used to allow for longer throws with decent dispersion. As far as not absorbing the sound like the tube here, you're correct. Now that you mentioned it, I'm curious as to what effect adding holes to the tube would have. Unless the phase cancellation would be a problem, it seems like that would act similar to a horn design and disperse in the way that they are trying to.
@blahorgaslisk7763
@blahorgaslisk7763 2 жыл бұрын
Making the tube out of glass would make it to heavy to propagate the high frequency sound. But made out of plastic it's not stiff enough instead. There is a reason that tweeters are small and made of extremely light materials. So damned if you do and damned if you don't. The use of a cone held above a tweeter element to spread the sound is a better design. The angled baffles in front of the tweeter is some times called an acoustic lens and have often been used to control the spread of the sound, usually to make it spread horizontally but not as much vertically.

Sony made a big (1.85 meter) version of this in 2009. It was called "Sountina" model number NSA-PF1. All the "sound-object"-type speakers like the glass panels/paintings work on the bending wave principal. Speakers like that have been around for a long time like the Manger transducer from 1980.
@TrioLOLGamers
@TrioLOLGamers 2 жыл бұрын
Probably but for TVs the idea is not wrong: You put an exciter (that is only a magnet) in an exactly position to move a big surface and you use it like a magneplanar speaker. With this thing you have a cilinder so... If they use the exciter horizontally you wil probably have bad/poor performances and if you use it vertically you have only the top part creating the high frequencies so a waste of energy/space...

Important thing about LDAC devices on Android. Especially Sony's earbuds and headphones where some people complain about the sound being "boomy" Go into dev settings on your android phone. Scroll down to the LDAC Bluetooth settings and make sure the sample rate and bits per sample match your source. Otherwise your phone or the headphones will try to upsample resulting in worse sound. My XM3's are much tighter and balanced when these settings match my source (deezer hifi so it's 44.1/16)

I think the "mid speaker" he pointed to is just the porting for bass speaker. I gather there's a max SPL difference between the tweeter and woofer and a poor crossover, causing the weak performance of highs when loud. Not surprised with this silly design. It's odd that you stopped the sweep before the top, the most interesting range for a bizarre tweeter design.

@@Joe-cm5kl What? Apple is an extremely conservative company. They famously say that they wait for tech to be perfected before they implement it, remember how long it took them to implement OLED screens or customizable home screens on their phones? The iPod is a derivative of the walkman. The Ipad is a tablet PC, they've been around for years. The Iphone is a fancy PDA, they've been around for years. The Iwatch is a smart watch, they've been around for years. Th mac is a laptop, the Earpod is a pair of wireless earphones; hardly revolutionary. Just because they popularize a product class doesn't mean that they take risks, especially when they have a fan base that consumes much of what they put out uncritically. Oh wait, they have taken some genuine risks like: Removing the headphone jack (and forcing the industry as a whole to copy them, except Sony). Not having expandable storage; like ever (and forcing the industry as a whole to copy them, except Sony). Not including a charger, for obvious reasons. @@Ehh..... don't get me wrong, I love Sony audio devices (got the XM3's, link buds and my blueray/hifi system) and each of them has their own place and usage. I'm, luckily, able to understand enough to mush together my own Bluetooth receiver and a good set of bookshelves that I'd never need the use for 300$+ speakers (even made a few different types of homemade battery packs to make them "portable") But I am aware that people just like things to work, and I know that I could never make good wireless earbuds myself Could be cool if LMG did a video on creating your own great audio, in any form, as I don't think that putting some copper wire in a receiver is that hard (but then they might not get as many sponsors if they show us how to do what *they* do but better

I have one of the Walmart lavalamp speakers and it's nice looking, serves a purpose, and is decently loud with good sound quality...but it only cost me about $30. So this is definitely something for someone who wants that particular aesthetic or the novelty of a glass? tweeter.

something to note about youtube sine sweep videos, there'll always be a hard cut around16kHz because audio compression algorithms that youtube (and most places) use get rid of everything above to help with compression, since a vast majority of people can't tell the difference in normal usage anyway

This was a great share by Dan. Sine sweep was a very nice touch. He may have been too lenient on the pricing though-$250+ has had some real nice and portable options like Bang and Olufsen’s offerings for a good while already. And while I was as excited as he was at the prospect of the tweeter design, as soon as he found out it was plastic it was like a prelude into what a let down the speaker was going to be pending pricing.

Oh, thank god! I love LMG, but it is always so high energy and the sound quality always favors the upper frequencies. This was so relaxing. I put it on, had a glass of red wine, and played with my dog. Great experience. More of this.
