South Africa’s ambassador to the US talks to Marc Lamont Hill about the implications of the ICJ case and its ruling.
Last week, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered provisional measures in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel. The ruling states that Israel must prevent and punish incitement of genocidal acts and allow civilians access to humanitarian aid.
The decision comes after nearly four months of war in Gaza, which has killed more than 26,000 people and caused a major humanitarian crisis.
While the interim ruling on South Africa's case has been hailed as a legal win for Palestinians and their supporters, many are questioning what practical implications this will have on the war and for the people of Gaza. Will South Africa’s case help change the course of the conflict?
This week on UpFront, Marc Lamont Hill talks to South Africa’s ambassador to the United States, Ndumiso Ntshinga.

Literally this court case means nothing, the US also is not a co-defendant, it can’t do anything to stop the events in Gaza, neither can any other nation really, especially the US, they went through Afghanistan and did the same thing Israel did and at that time they didn’t have an international court case calling their war a crime against humanity. Fighting terror groups is difficult and often times will result in a large portion of civilian casualties, it’s unavoidable when you are fighting terror fighters.

Had the Jewish population claimed antisemitism during apartheid, they would have been relegated to Indian areas under the Group Areas Act. Semitic people are Arab, not European. Basic rights were *never* denied to the people living under apartheid. They had housing, water, schooling, etc.. Palestinians are going through something so much worse. Look at how the ANC government's treating their people now- more poverty, moms are forcing their kids into prostitution, and then the more babies they have, the more money they get from the government- R350 per month= $18 per month. I fully back their case, because genocide is beyond reprehensible- South Africans were *never* subjected to that, although rightly argued, the black labour force was needed, and black people were treated as "less", but our country can't align ourselves with what's happening in Gaza. I'm very proud that ZA did that, but stop trying to pretend that our country's perfect. Mixed feelings from a South African who is so proud that my country stood up, but so angry at the corruption happening here.

I am South African/black and I lived under apartheid and my parents did too and their parents parents etc etc etc and clearly you never lived under apartheid as a black person. South Africa is looking in its own back yard in Africa. That's why they sent close to 3000 Soldiers to the DRC to assist them in their fight against rebels, just last week 2 of their soldiers died in this fight. They are also involved in many peace missions around the continent. Sometimes one just needs to educate themselves before making assumptions and uninformed blankets comments.

Didn't the International Court of Justice say that the Court is: "Gravely concerned about the fate of the hostages abducted during the attack on Israel, on 7 October, 2023, and held since then, by Hamas and other armed groups, and calls for their immediate, and unconditional release." Immediate and unconditional release. And that was a week ago. Things that make you go, "Hmmmmm."
