Same, you aren't alone. I consider myself an unbelievably talented guitar player and music is my passion but i just can't see a career with it. Maybe i need to sit down, set some goals, and try it. The "trying" it is scary because it can amount to more time wasted. At 28 your'e afraid to make a wrong move because time feels like it's pulling against you.

@@PoundMountain I’m musically inclined myself. There are things you can do to get started in figuring things out. Volunteer to play in different venues, find connections through Facebook, network, create KZfaq videos talking about or instructing on a particular instrument, etc. Do it because you love it and get good and maybe one day you’ll be discovered. That’s what happened to my uncle who is now a multi-millionaire musician anyway. His name is Doug Seegers.

When you said you didn't waste your life with 2 years of school there must be something you got out of that I actually started to cry because that hit me. I went through 2 different programs and felt like I wasted so much time on it but you're right I did learn some valuable skills and made friends and learned what I didn't want to do. This is so true, I tell this to my sister too. After 3 years of Chemical Engineering I got academically excluded because on my 4th historical year I was still stuck on some 2nd and 3rd year subjects. And I have never once been mad that I wasted time, because that time I spent in Chemical Engineering really opened up the world to me. I felt way way more confident in my capabilities, I understood better how everything works and the world works. I learned so many valuable skills that I could use in my future career. I don't believe that I wasted time at all, no matter how many people tell me I did.

That could have been me calling in. Thirty years ago I was in the exact same situation. Associates degree, prerequisites, getting into the nursing program, and then realizing it wasn't for me the first time learning in the hospital. My mother was a nurse as well. Never found my passion just continued in my job since I was okay with it and settled with the stability of it all. Years later I'm working for the same company in a better position but now returning to the question of what passions do I have that I can tap into as I transition from work I have to do to work I want to do when I retire. This hit home for me. Good for her to call in! Happy she found a path to follow.

Hi Paul, a career is not a job it is a journey: think about the skills that are common to each job you have done rather than the job title. Think of your resume as a career portfolio rather than a job title. as long as you are working, you will take skills and knowledge to the next job. I am 60 and I am constantly wondering what is my best fit. I just finished 1.5 years of full time postgrad study while working and have decided it was interesting but I probably won’t work in that field but it shows I am open to change, committed to learning and exploring my abilities: employers value that. Something I studied will open a door. I wish I could talk more about this with you but I don’t want to steal Ken’s thunder so why don’t you contact him.

Depending on what avenue she pursues with kids, that nursing degree could really help. Special needs kids or those with phsical disabilities are likely gonna need more medical attention than their counterparts. It also lays a foundation if she follows any kind of physical or speech therapy with kids.

What I've seen in people that have made it is that nothing happened to be a waste. Everyone is guided by laws of attraction down the path they need to go down in order to aquire the skills and understanding they WILL use in their life's purpose. Working wth children, it would be a lifesaver to have the skills of a nurse to identify situations and signals in an emergency, especially when dealing wwith children that don't verbally express themselves in a way we would always understand. She might end up saving one of their lives someday. The point is appreciate everything that you do because it CAN be applied in something meaningful in the future.

My least favorite saying ever is "get a job doing something you love and you'll never work a day in your life." There is nothing I love so much that I want to do it 8 hours a day every day. For example, I like fishing, but if I had to mandatorily fish 8 hours a day every day, I would start to hate it very quickly.

I love that this lady thought she didn't have passion, but it sounded like she had a passion she just might have been afraid to go after it. Healthcare is so broad that you can jump pretty easy from one thing to another. I love my current job, but it doesn't make money. Knowing that there are so many entry-level jobs that make twice what I make makes me doubt my love for what I do. I consider going and doing the other job for a while, just to teach myself a lesson. Distance makes the heart grow fonder. I know I will miss my job, and I think I need that reminder. Also, I can make some money to feel comfortable and then settle down into the job that I love that doesn't make a lot.

I spent 4 years studying a high school teaching degree but decided in the fourth year of study that it wasn’t for me. Although I liked elements of teaching, I could never get comfortable with the public speaking and my anxiety couldn’t handle it, I’ve had a few other jobs since but it’s only to get paid and I live for the weekend. I feel like there’s heaps of thing I’m interested in but nothing I want to do for 40 hours a week. I don’t know if my lazy, depressed or just haven’t found my area yet. I was always someone who never knew what I wanted to do and change my mind constantly constantly, even as a kid. I’ve thought about this for so long that it’s exhausting. I’ve given up looking for my one thing that’ll make me happy. it doesn’t exist for me.

I've been going to college for several years, changing my major, because I have no clue what I want to do and what I'm good at. I'm more hands-on, so trades interest me a lot, but because of my injuries, I can't do anything physically labor-orientated. I feel like I'm wasting my time on a degree I'm not going to use. What is your career advice for people close to their 40s? What if you reached that age and you still dont know what is your 'thing'? Is it too late?

It’s never too late. Same as you’re never too old to be homeless

Dont complicate education. Theyre all profit companies. Just pick one thing that has demand. Example being engineeering, accounting, a trade And know which specific job you can get after yoire done and build those skills. Keep it short. Example choose 2 jobs max you can build your skills with. Be focused and have depth. Example for trades pick plumbing, heavy duty mechanic, truck driving more laid back, equipment operating, engineering. You get it. Dont complicate things. And save, and invest the rest, and build.up. and build a company on the side if you can and want but dont think this is easy its not. So take that in mind. So if youre young. Have direction at a young age. Choose a program, know what job you can get when youre done focused, save and invest. And dont waste your money. Dont think mbas are valuable theyre not. Unless you go to a top uni and have a netwrok connection beforehand. If u dont youd be wastine your time. If choosing a masters pick something narrow like structureal engineering, data analysis, construction management. Something technical.

Some people just aren’t built for work. I could be wrong, but every job sucks. Ask a surgeon, nurse, paramedic, electrician. They’d all rather not be working. That’s why she quit, she doesn’t like work. No one does. The only people I think that like work are entertainers

I get what this guy is saying, but what he’s not telling her is that even when you pick something that you feel passionate about it still won’t be very exciting on a daily basis because in the corporate business world you will be expected to do that task that you’re “passionate” about at usually an unreasonable productivity level that eventually becomes miserable. For example, many mechanics love all things cars and enjoy working on cars, but get a job at a local dealership and see how fast they likely push you to get so many cars fixed and done in a certain time frame. I’m not saying it’s wrong to work at a steady pace, but many times nowadays they put the work of 3 people on the shoulders of 1 person. That line of work you said you enjoyed eventually becomes exhausting everyday because of the stress of productivity and the company that’s only concern is that bottom dollar made at end of year.

I used to work retail, always loved animals and I became a dog groomer. I am a victim and survivor of domestic violence and my hand was broken and damaged and Im not the same. Physically I cant do what I was doing and emotionally I just dont want to do anything. 😢🫤 6 months later I need some kind of work and new career, mt dominant hand doesnt work the same and I am in pain consistently. I dont know what to do...
