Anyone can learn to double or triple tongue but there's something you gotta do first. For 20 years I thought I'd never be a multiple tonguer. This was the key to unlocking it. Not claiming to be a guru or a brilliant player but sharing in the hopes that this will help someone else unlock their multiple tonguing. All thoughts my own, feel free to argue, disagree or share what works for you in the comments.

I make all my own backing tracks and arrange, record and mix all the parts. I just like making music. Learning the trombone is the thing that got me through 2020, it's so nice to share some of things I'm working on with you.
I'm an acrobatic musician/musical acrobat and I love making videos, practicing trombone and having a laugh. Feel free to leave a question, comment or request in the comments.

My problem is that when I say "Da ga da ga" or "Ta ka ta ka" even remotely quickly, I get tongued tied very quickly and it just comes out as "Ta ta ta ta" or "Da da da da"

I felt the way you do and this still happens to me. Something that works for me is to practice multiple tonguing VERY slowly to the point where it's almost unbearable. This starts to strengthen your tongue and the muscles that facilitate your tonguing so that when you finally speed it up you have it fully under control.

Pick a tune that would require double tonguing and treat the syllables like lyrics.

I think it might be about the dreaded ‘p’ word (practice!). I’ve been told by a teacher that the tongue is a muscle and you need to build it up the same way as any other muscle.

Hurrah I got it. Your awesome!! I played drums my whole life now at 65 years old took up trombone three months later I’m double and triple tonguing!!! Not super fast but slow and smooth. My dad played for the symphony in Europe so I was brought up with that sound and I think it’s the greatest sounding instrument on earth!!! Thanks

Thank you so so so so much I have been playing for about 5-6 years and I just got to highschool with my new director and I realized that I didn't know how to tongue and I've been going puh instead of Ta or Ka for like 5-6 years and this really helped me learn how to use my tongue to play instead of using my throat to play because I've been playing using a puh sound and this really helped thank you so much you are wonderful.

HI Kyle, I've just started playing my trombone again, and wanted to improve some of my technique, such as double tonguing. I was taught doing "tu-ku-tu-ku", but that never sounded correct. I tried your suggestion of using "da-ga" instead today (and of course kept in mind that the air flow is constant), and voila, I was able to double-tongue 16th notes cleanly! Hooray! Thanks.

It's like muscle training. You just have to keep doing it at a slow tempo until it feels like your tongue it going to fall off. But you also have to know how to single tongue properly. You need to have a consistent air flow, not stopping it hard when you tongue, and not let your tongue hit your teeth. If you can't single tongue, you won't be able to double tongue. I've spent a whole year now learning double and triple tonguing. I had practiced it about an hour a day. Now I'm pretty confident at both. I can even triple tongue scales. Now I'm working on arpeggios and large intervals. At the moment I can comfortably triple tongue the chromatic scale at a tempo of 90.
