I had this problem for a year. I was able to take the key out by disconnecting the wires under the dashboard. I was doing that every time i turn off my car... until today. This worked for me. 1 year of problems solved in literally 3 minutes. Thank you so much

Exactly what happened to me. Followed the instructions. Found a broken piece. Removed the plastic piece, and the key can now be removed. Thank you. Saved me lots of money not having to get a locksmith to come out. 2014 Elantra In Australia. Right hand drive.

Thank you sir for taking the time to video and post this. Our cover had broken off a a few weeks ago, but it must have taken time for the tiny pieces to fall into the clicker and thus prohibit it from properly closing as per your video. This saved us a lot of time and headache. I was going to follow another video removing the whole cover and remove the clicker. But a little more searching helped me to find the same problem as mine. It was the miniature pieces from the broken gear shift cover that created the problem. You sir, are a lifesaver.

Scott you are a scholar and gentleman. Same issue for i30. Wife had RAC assist out., who diagnosed a lock barrel issue, and disconnected battery to secure car - at our house. However I found that once battery disconnected the key could be removed. I reconnected the battery and had the same issue. Then found your video, applied the clean, as I remembered the gear cap coming off too. Job fixed. Wife had lined up locksmith so I cancelled him and saved a few hundred bucks. Cheers buddy By the way, follow any vehicle instructions for disconnecting the battery as some with computer systems require a specific order for disconnection.

I never post comments on social media but felt i had to this time. This same problem occurred with my 2014 Sonata to almost the same exact detail. Since the dealer's service area was closed I called Hyundai directly and they were of no hope, telling me that an "engineer"" would be back to me in 4 - 5 business days! Luckily while doing my own research I found this video and followed it step by step. The only difference was one of the pieces of plastic was a bit larger than the other but as soon as they were both removed, problem solved!!!!! THANK YOU SCOTT!!!!!

Thank you very much for sharing this! I had to sort this problem out tonight in the ‘17 i30 rental I found myself stranded in. Google suggested to gently wiggle the steering wheel while trying to remove the key- I had no joy with that advice. Listening out for the click near the steering column was a brilliant hint. Even though there was no blockage inside the shifter switchgear, it only took a couple of times holding the push button down and letting it flick out until that magic click happened and 40 minutes of struggle was immediately over.
