1:32 What to do if you can't fall asleep without carbs
In this video, we're going to talk about what to do if you can't fall asleep without carbs.
Why can't I fall asleep without carbs?
It can take a long time to fix insulin resistance, even once you make the switch to a ketogenic diet. With insulin resistance, you have higher amounts of insulin. With keto, you consume lower amounts of carbohydrates. But, you're still going to have high insulin despite cutting out the carbs because of the resistance problem.
Higher amounts of insulin can push the blood sugars down too low in the middle of the night. With low blood sugars, you have counter hormones that keep your blood sugars from going down too low. The two main ones are cortisol and adrenaline. These two hormones are behind many sleeping problems.
What to do if you can't fall asleep without carbs:
1. Time (as you fix insulin resistance, this problem will get better)
2. Take electrolytes (potassium, magnesium, and calcium)
3. Take apple cider vinegar before bed
4. Adjust the amount of protein you consume as your last meal
5. Consume more vegetables
6. Take vitamin B1
7. Limit caffeine consumption
8. Take exogenous ketones before bed
9. Get more vitamin D by being in the sun or by taking vitamin D

I was a monk for two years in my youth. During that period I had to adapt to live all three eights. Eight hours of work, eight of prayer and eight of rest ... following the cycle of sunlight. from that experience it remained that time and patience are required to achieve objectives. I think the secret of this healthy diet is to understand that the body is a slow system. With your advice and thanks to this waterfall of information (based on facts) that you give us, both time and effort are shortened. Thank you.

Yes this is me. My adrenaline spikes huge when I cut carbs and sugar. I can’t sleep, I toss and turn and I have major jitters for first half of the day. I have that flight or fight feeling. It’s hard as I suffer from anxiety so this is very very hard for me. The energy I have is crazy. Normally I have a lot of energy but this is very hard to manage. It’s been over a week now and it’s not getting any better. I’ve lost 5 lbs which is great but I’m really struggling with the insomnia and jitters and fast heart rate. Gonna try the B1 to see if it helps. Thank you for all your information and hard work that you do it’s very much appreciated.

I am exactly in the same situation. I stopped sugar abruptly for a carnivorous diet. I am naturally anxious. So you are not alone. Let's do this experience together until the end. There's no point in stressing out. You're doing an experiment and even if sometimes you're stressed, don't worry, I've never found myself in a dramatic situation. We have been eating badly for years, giving our hard-working bodies time to readapt.

Wow, this answered my lifelong issue of having to eat before bed. Even on keto, I save a serving of cheese or nuts for bedtime. I try to always do keto and IF, but fall for holiday meals, vacations, etc and go on and off. Probably have to stay on it for a year to get the insulin resistance down. Thanks Dr Berg. I have never had that with Keto because of taking all those supplements and all my veggies... but did carnivore for 3 weeks as an elimination diet and week 3 I couldn't sleep more than 3hrs at a time and woke up feeling the cortisol surging through me! It was a tormenting experience and continued 5 nights in a row. It was the reason I reintroduced veggies a week sooner than planned! I felt like my body wanted me up hunting in the middle of the night! I'd be wide awake but getting more and more sleep deprived. It was torture. I would say the carnivore community really need to warn and educate of that and it's another point towards Keto being healthier for us.

IDK if the Chemo is connected, but I've spoken about this to my nurse and other support people and it seems to be unusual. So, if you're augmenting Chemo with Keto, and you have this issue, you may not get any help from them beyond sleeping pills. No thanks. We're on our own.

THANK YOU! I have watched many of your videos and learned so much and been armed with enough encouragement to continue keto when times were tough, but never felt so passionate to comment. So thank you for the others as well… But, for the last nearly 20 years I have had so many nights where I wake up having what I call nightmares. And unfortunately the only thing that will calm me down and put me back to sleep (without nightmares) is to go visit the kitchen and eat whatever. And then I noticed every time I would try to start a diet (including low-carb or keto) I would dread going to bed at night because I knew that I would be waking up around 1 AM and being desperate to eat, and yes a particular cravings for carbs. This is the first time I’ve heard not only somebody relating to me but giving a scientific explanation and a solution. And I can also say that I have been on this “round“ of keto (I’m trying to make it permanent) solidly for a couple weeks and I think I am over a hump. my sleeping has gotten better even though not 100% there yet, but now I have more hope that it will eventually fix itself completely as i am faithful to the keto. Yet again another incentive and motivation from you. Thank you.

You know nightmares and sleep apnea are linked. Monitor you blood oxygen level with a pulse oximeter at night. Any drops below 90 need to be looked at more closely to see what your problem is. Nightmares are meant to kick you out of deep sleep. If you are on psych meds, they can cause weird dreams too. Some medication will say a side effect is weird dreams but they fail to tell you that with weird dreams comes suppressed breathing and low blood oxygen.

When I cut carbs from my evening meals and only have fish/meat plus veggies without the pasta/rice my deep sleep improves significantly (nearly 2x). I'm still eating the same amount of carbs but just pushing them earlier in the day. Any idea why cutting the evening carbs is stopping multiple wakeups between 12-2am? My last meal each day is 6pm.

no idea, actually many people benefit from eating carbs at night to sleep way better when keto gives them insomnia. Not sure why it works the opposite for you

Hello Dr. Berg. I have a problem some days and it usually lasts for a week. My problem is, when I want to sleep, my body falls into a nap, my body shakes strongly and wakes up and stays like this. all night long. Please note that I do strength and cardio sports regularly. Very few carbohydrates and sugars diets. What do I do to get rid of this problem?

Thank you so much for this video Eric and all the time you invest in making them. I've always had an issue with sleep for the past 40 years (2-3 hrs a night average) and am extremely interested in your comment about taking B1 - I'm writing to you from Scotland and wondered if you could possibly advise on a brand and format for which to take this supplement - should I look for B1 in tablet or powder form and should it just be B1 if that makes sense - sorry, all very new to taking supplements :) Again, thank you so much for your time

I wake up in pain. It is around 2 am sometimes it's 3 am, but always in pain. If Cortisol is part of the system that controls pain and inflammation, and Cortisol is the lowest at 2 am, that would explain why I wake up around that time every single night. The misery and chronic pain associated with scoliosis and a bad bite is excruciating. I have no pain meds available to me. When I finally get one pill that someone offers and spares, I sleep like a baby.

Can you address a situation where a person has high sugars while fasting and the sugar goes back to normal when they eat?
@user-od7fv9up6t
@user-od7fv9up6t Жыл бұрын
When you fast, your liver produces glucose to keep you alive. Insulin helps reducing that glucose. When you fast there is very little insulin circulating, therefore, your glucose increase (specially with insulin resistance which makes the little insulin circulating, even more useless). Eating increases insulin and therefore, that blood sugar goes down

But now I have under active thyroid (Just watched all your episodes regarding that), severe gerd, and other issues. My question is someone coming from an eating disordered past would do well on this lifestyle If I stayed in a calorie surplus to continue to gain weight? Thank you

THC improves sleep onset, but disrupts deeper sleep. Hopefully, you are actually just using "a little" of that. CBD is totally fine - however, too *little* or too *much* of that can also keep you awake.
