Tablets have come a really long way from the early days of the iPad and today’s powerful chips, compact batteries, and incredible screen technology, the line between laptop and tablet has really blurred. There are laptops with removable keyboards, tablets with attached keyboards, and even laptops with two screens where one acts like a digital keyboard. So this got me wondering. Are they actually interchangeable? Can I actually replace my laptop with a tablet? So I set out on a mission to answer this question and for the past 7 days used a tablet instead of my laptop. I still had to do all my usual tasks like managing emails, online shopping, budgeting, everything I would normally have done on my laptop, but I was forced to do it on my tablet.

ADDITIONAL REVIEW NOTES:
Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra
14.6” OLED display
Flagship Snapdragon Gen 2 for Samsung
Extremely slim with great screen to body ratio
1.6lb
In screen fingerprint sensor
Ultra low latency S-Pen
New keyboard cover design
Stacked specs
It’s the best android tablet on the market
This has Samsung Dex which feels like a cheat code.
So in the beginning, things were off to a rough start. It took time
Chrome and Brave are ok, Samsung Internet is ideal. Just make sure you switch to desktop mode
I found alternate apps to make things work and are optimized for tablets.
Hotkeys work! (takes a beat to learn the differences, but most are 1:1 with Windows
You can use Dex on the tablet or on a monitor
Wireless Dex
You can use dex on a monitor while using the tablet as a tablet, but not both
But you can flow pointer to tablet screen
Ports. USB-C plus You can technically insert an SD card (from a camera, etc) but you need a tool to do so
Still good for expanding storage though
But no HDMI, headphone, or USB-A
The Hub from Anker. (Anker 551)
Then things started to pick up and it felt more like a laptop but even better in some ways.
*Cameras on rear for scanning
Has a flash on the rear cameras
*Accurate pen with low latency for natural writing
No laptop pen even comes close
Probably better webcam quality
Two lenses to choose from - standard and ultrawide angle - 4K
Auto framing
Quicker startup
Biometric sign in
Biometrics to unlock lots of things
Smooth and intuitive touch gestures just like a phone
So I was really digging this
But once I really got in the zone, I was able to be productive in apps like
Until I ran into a few issues
My wired printer didn’t work
Strangely only the Tab S9+ offers cellular 5G
Dex is great but many apps are not optimized - Samsung forces though and it sort of works
Tons of apps are not optimized for tablets at all
Can use mobile apps (great!)
You can also get lots of Android widgets on your homescreen
Cannot use work horse apps like Adobe Permiere Pro, Creo, etc.
ALSO BETTER FOR WORKING ON THE GO
Has GPS
Sort of has 5G
Pretty solid battery life
Lighter and thinner than most laptops
This has IP68 Water Resistance!!!
Durable Gorilla Glass Victus+ display
If you are traveling, you could always run remote desktop via the tablet and use a big machine back home
Keyboard case is nice but has no trackpad. Also feels more sturdy on my lap
Daily Board = a better version of screen saver (when charging)
Two different UIs - one dedicated to tablet use, which is easier
COMPARE TO Yoga 9i
Dex feels like a linux OS but with more limitations
A watered down Windows 11
Limited to one external display
If you mostly just browse the web, review PDFs, take handwritten notes, and work with common programs like google docs, excel, powerpoint, or email, this is ideal
If you need any heavy lifting or high output productivity
The device seems capable but the software is not
SUVs analogy

Are there any downsides to getting an international 5G model in the states? For example, will they allow you to insure it and truely follow through on claims? I only ask because side I had an international model of a canon eos r, and canon wouldn’t honor warranties, insurance or anything. I had to pay out of pocket because it wasn’t intended for US market. I guess their excuse was if something wasn’t working right it’s because it was for an international market.

I am currently looking into this now. I answer emails, and teach online via video chats, create lesson plans, etc. I don't do all the crazy stuff I'd use a laptop for. Just simple use and easy to get from home, work, and traveling. This vídeo actually helped me decide to just go with the tablet

I have a Galaxy Tab S8+ with the slim keyboard case and have fully replaced my laptop with it. I used to have both a laptop and a Galaxy Tab S6 but I barely used the laptop and I wanted to reduce down to just one mobile computing solution and this is the perfect one for me. I remote into a desktop PC when I need Windows features, but otherwise can fully get away with the tablet. Browsing the web, studying, checking emails, video calls, media consumption, finance management, etc, are all really solid. I do bring a mouse with me everywhere, but I would do that with a laptop anyway, so that's not an issue. I also only need it when I got into Dex mode or remote into my Windows machine. I know it's not for everyone, but it can work very well if you know what you're trying to accomplish, and more importantly, what your limitations will be.

@6:20 I have multiple PC laptops. Some a few years old and others that i purchased just recently. and if you're waiting too long to switch it on and wait to sign in so you can begin your work - then you need to either upgrade your laptop components or upgrade the laptop itself. All my PC laptops switch on from shut down and are ready to use under 25 seconds at the very most, average wait time is 15 seconds from shut down.

Great video. One, pretty niche, point to add is that the Samsung tablet comes with a SIM card holder, meaning that if you work in remote areas you can still be connected; I don't think the Lenovo has this feature? Also, Samsung does make a keyboard with a track pad for the S9.

Superb observations here. Love all Samsung products. I got Fold 4 and Tab S8+. I was thinking same that I would replace my most work from Laptop to Tab, but TBH it doesn't work that way. Dex is good mode, but not sufficient. Common image editing in Samsung native app is huge load. Most application need optimization for tablet specific otherwise it wont able to use super high configurations it has.

I switched to ipad pro (keyboard and pencil) and it helped me to surpass my college days… it is just a 3 and 1 machine to get things done video editing, photo editing, working documents etc… at first their is a learning curve on how to have a good workflow but when you get the flow of it is very easy to do what you need to do… i considered anything when i decided to switch to ipad ecosystem but if you will ask to choose android tablet or ipad i will choose the ipad in terms of availability of apps like editing documenting pdf writing almost everything… but in the end it depends on the user on how will you use it for…

So what you are saying is that you are not a white collar professional or STEM person, correct. Also, iPads don't have: -free pen -gesture capabilities on its pencil -OLED screens -microSD slots -no file management system -no customizabilty -900,000 fewer apps -tens of thousands more apps you have to buy -more than 2 app multi-tasking -no dex I'll stop here as you get the point

Not quite as fanby, been using a Tab S7 for a few years for my remote work. Dex is great for the days I'm in another office to connect with another monitor. Best feature is the connectivity for presenting and ability to move around and highlight portions of presentation without having to sit and use a mouse. Plus it's big enough to watch movies and read while flying without taking up a lot of room.

I tried using my iPad as a laptop while travelling. The portability side of things worked well. However I needed an adapter and dongle to have access to an SD card reader, usb ports and HDMI port. The main limitations centred around file handling. With three cameras in tow transferring files and editing photos and videos was more difficult than using a dedicated laptop. I had previously used a 15” laptop, tried using 10.2” iPad with keyboard case then settled on a Microsoft Surface Pro.

Great review, very thoughtful. I have a slightly different set of requirements. I want to be able to boot android or linux, or even better, run them side by side. I have a large body of programs that I use on Linux Mint, but there are some things I prefer to run on android because I already run them on my RaZR+, and they're not available on Linux. Emulators just don't cut it, for performance and compatibility reasons. For a while there Linux on Dex was the answer to all my requirements, but then Samsung ended that program. Too bad.

I believe that Signal itself would work on the tablet, but being bound to a phone number, unless you have your SIM into the tablet, you cannot have the same experience. I know that a Windows and Apple client apps exist, so that they synchronize with your main Signal, but yes, I see the point of not having it for Android.

I am two weeks in on the S9 Ultra. Use it for Word, PowerPoint , Gmail, etc so I find it to be perfect because I get mostly what I need w out the drama of opening up my speedy Lenovo, the long boot, the updates, the restarts….that crap exhausts me. Re PowerPoint. I do think the MS versions n the Lenovo is that much more powerful, but for editing, adding images , shuffling slides and tidying up, the pad is perfect

All this comparison is valid if you are going to use it as a everyday device i.e. browsing, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, PDF reader, Video calls etc tasks ! The moment you think about anything more like Programming/App development/Photo/Video Editing etc, even a moderate laptop blows Tablets (Android, iPad or even Windows tablets) out of water !! I have recently tried comparing a top of the line Windows 2 in 1 Dell tablet with a Dell laptop (theoretically same specs like RAM and CPU) and got really frustrated with the tablet while using for Visual Studio, SSMS, OBS Studio and similar apps plus Edge browser with 20 or so tabs open at a time, so finally had to swap it with a laptop (similar specs and also of same Dell brand). My guess is tablets are not really designed to be used with dual 4K monitors through Thunderbotl Docks and for a lot of parallel processing but more for portability and touch-screen operations in mind ! If you compare Android tablets then the pain for high-end computing is even more than that for Windows tablets !!! Even the top of the line iPad is not good for high-end computing purpose, you'll want to switch to MacBook Pro in that case.

I've been using DEX on an S8plus for 7 months now and I agree with your conclusion. DEX is great if you mostly use a browser and compatible apps. You have to be willing to adapt and change some habits coming from a windows enviornment, but for me the pluses outweigh the negatives. Instant on, no annoying windows updates when you least expect them, quiet operation. I use a UGreen dongle that gives me HDMI, USB, SD ports and I can connect everything that I need. One thing I learned is to be aware of HDMI cables as lower version cables can cause mouse delay that is annoying. Addtionally USB3 hard drive interferred with my mouse signal so I had to add a USB extension cord to my mouse/keyboard reciever to move it far enough away from the dongle.

As things stand now, it comes to use case. If you are not a power user and do not need to do complex tasks, a Galaxy Tab S9 can suffice, even in Dex Mode. But otherwise, there's nothing like having a desktop OS and the options/features it gives you. I personally would like it a lot if Android tablets like the Galaxy Tab S9 allowed you to run Windows or Linux in a virtual machine (with hardware acceleration)-that would be super awesome.

I love using my Tab S9 for work, it is compact a messenger bag is enough to carry it along with the hub, buds and mouse. The only issues for me is printing, wired and wireless. No drivers for wired, and wireless printing is unreliable. We use hp p1100w at my office, it is wireless but somehow inconsistent with android. Hope Samsung and Google will solve the printing problem via software.

I was editing my website, pdfs, running xero, and first day up had a document I had to fill in and sign. Just used the pen to do it manually and the bank was happy. I went + as that fits in my handbags along with the mouse. I have absolutely no regrets and this will be my travel mode for future. I have a wifi printer and printing was a breeze.

My Windows laptop has been in depot repair so I've tried a similar forced experiment trying to get work done with my Galaxy Tab S6. It's a hell of a good tablet, but has so many minor inconveniences that I wound up getting a cheap open box Windows tablet to work on until my laptop comes back. A few examples of minor problems which add up: -Couldn't upload a file to a website in order to process it - the file management wasn't up to the task -Two finger trackpad scroll doesn't work on GDocs (but mouse wheel does) -Zoom mobile doesn't allow mic selection -Can't switch profiles in browsers like you can on desktop -Exoporting a video in LumaFusion led to out of sync audio that I couldn't fix for the life of me. Borrowed a laptop and had no problem on export -Couldn't attach an external webcam None of these are deal breakers on their own, but these and other annoyances all add up to one. Little of this is Samsung's fault - they're mostly limitations of specific apps or Android. Samsung's tablets are great - amazing build quality, top notch multitasking, and nice screen, sound, and peripherals. But it wasn't quite good enough for me to get my work done well.

In order to replace my laptop, a tablet needs to be able to run VSCode. I know there are some ways to do it by a web app view into an instance run on another device, but I am weary that it will lag or be too slow. I really like the idea of a tablet with even more portability than my laptop, but it won't be worth it if I can't code when I'm out and about.

Thanks for the video. I´m actually going through this exact decision. I own an older Mac Book Pro and I´m thinking of replacing it for a new one or buying the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra. The investment is similar, however I realized I don´t really take advantage of all the features the Mac Book Pro offers. My time is spent writing, talking to groups of people, explaining things on a tv screen, and some content creation. Mac books are amazing products, iphones are excellent phones, but overpriced. So I´d guess the only thing that could make it an easy decision is how I manage my information. Can tablets can replace laptops? Only if: - I can save information on my tablet? - I can create or import folders of information that I manage on a daily basis? - I can use Office (Word, PPT, PDF´s, Adobe) regularly and at a top level - I can upload videos, do some editing for social platforms

Hey there. Love your reviews - I came in on your Watch videos, and appreciate the depth you go to. But, I have to ask: how relevant is this video in the context of iPadOS 17 and Stage Maanager. A lot of the things you were saying are limits on the Samsung are basically no problem on the iPad. Connect a USB-Hub and you have all the ports you need. I'm not saying the iPad is better - but I found it odd to hear that Apps in Windows/External Monitor was the one feature that the iPad was lacking.

I love the flexibility that Dex provides - I really hope they improve upon it and the apps that it supports

Short answer from me, yes. While not at all latest, I used a tab s6 with Dex for about two years duration of the COVID pandemic. With a bluetooth mouse and keyboard (and screen when at home), she ate, she werked. Got what i needed done and some artwork here and there.

thank you for the anker suggestion. I don't want to have to bring my laptop on the train, but I need to be able to transfer my gopro footage from my SD card to my external drive so needed ports that the FE doesn't provide. I'm going to search for a usb-c docking station, but without the rigidity of your anker suggestion. I still want the tablet to sit up, but perhaps something easier to pack in my gear. any suggestions are appreciated 😊

I'm in the same boat as a lot of people here, I imagine. I have a pretty beefy 17in laptop that I use as my workstation, but I don't always want to haul it around everywhere, especially if I'm just doing basic stuff like basic media consumption. There are a lot of good options, but all of them feel like I have to compromise on one thing or another. Samsung dex and their tablets are great, but it's not 100% the same as a Windows experience (can't install extensions on my web browser for example). Windows 2-in-1's give you the classic Windows experience but it sounds like battery life isn't as good as tablets are and there are just some apps that I prefer on android when it comes to (downloading shows/movies before a flight or reading books on the kindle app). I'm really leaning towards the lenovo yoga 9i but also hoping that the next generation of Surface tablets will address some issues but I'm still on the fence about what I want.

Lenovo tab extreme is the comparison that's needed. Same size as s9 ultra, works better as a laptop, has a dex like mode. Also mentioned lack of trackpad, but the book cover for s9 ultra does have this and makes it far more of a legitimate laptop replacement.

Great vid! I think a windows partition on an android device is a dream that won't come true, but 2 screens dex should! I have a work laptop and a personal rablet and I can't really use my entire setup with my tablet because of this...

Yeah, the dream device I want is an Android/Windows dual boot system with the efficiency and power (and great battery life) of M2 or similar ARM chips (but without losing compatibility of older programs on Windows!)

Back in the day there were some smaller 8" tablets that dual boot windows 8 and Android. Sadly they were basically junk. But I wish someone would try again. I'd love to be able to run windows on my tab s8+

great video but i think its worth mentioning that the price of tablets are cheaper than labtops or 2 in1 labtops so its kind of you get what you pay think and tablets are doing good enough for their price and ı dont think that companies would change the balance between products because of ecenomic reasons obviously

I still like laptops as typing on tablets is really frustrating. The screens are small and the keyboard is flimsy. That doesn't really matter if you have a desk, but I often have to type on a couch or in a chair, which gives the laptop a clear win. I also enjoy having a Windows OS rather than dealing with mobile apps on a tablet.
