I had no intention of engraving on this gift when I purchased it. The thought never crossed my mind, not once.
After a night of sleep, I awoke thinking: "I can engrave his name on that wallet and make it better."
If successful, this would create another new product for the Etsy shop and help continue to build out my product list.
Let's see how the xTool D1 10w laser diode handled the task in this video!

Looks perfect. You were getting me stressed out by second guessing yourself so relax and enjoy the learning process with laser etching. I messed up plenty of times when I started but I learned from it and continued on. Keep up the good work!

Hi Dobermine, I love this machine and process without a doubt. The end result isn’t what I envisioned because I second guessed my initial framing and that’s what really bothered me was second guessing myself. Thanks for watching and for your encouragement, everything that I’m doing with this laser is just so much fun and creative it’s been a great addition to my life and not to mention a nice new albeit small income stream. All the best to you, Shane

I think the wallet came out great. I also have the same laser. I like it. I do keep scratch paper around & once I get the perfect settings I write them down in a permanent notebook that I use for reference. It’s all practice. You can definitely list that on Etsy.

Hi Jackie, Good call on some scratch paper with the perfect settings especially for once I have 100 things listed on Etsy that’ll be a huge time saver to know what settings were best without having to test all over again. Thank you for the positivity in addition to that suggestion. Bob really enjoyed the wallet so it will definitely be a new item that I’ll add to the online marketplaces for sure. All the very best to you, ~Shane

I love the optimism that leather could be as resilient to a laser as wood by thickness 😎 Always check that max power and passes first. Especially if you switch to a CO2 laser and want a good lifetime from it!

@@hobbylasermachine I've had a 10 watt blue laser and a 60 watt fibre laser galvo since Feburary and a 65 watt Gweike Storm 500 for the last month. Plenty of learning here too! the 10 watt blue laser is pretty tame but it will destroy leather easily. Vegetable cure leather fumes aren't as dangerous as regular chromium cure leather apparently. I'm in NZ too.

Thanks for the vids! I just ordered my laser engraver can’t wait to get into it. Are the fumes bad enough that you need to place the unit outside or will a garage suffice with its door open
@hobbylasermachine
@hobbylasermachine Жыл бұрын
Hi Christopher and welcome to the channel! I can only speak from my experience which has mainly been wood and I would feel confident engraving wood in a garage with the door open. The fumes are totally manageable. So long as the wood hasn’t been treated with some toxic chemical. Engraving metal or leather, I wouldn’t want to do that in the garage without being sure the air is safe. I’m still hesitant to start engraving glass until I’m sure it’s safe with my personal setup. Hope this helps and congrats on joining the laser community, there are some really good people you’ll meet here. ~Shane

Came here to say if your going to invest in “eye” protection. Get an enclosure. You’ll be protecting everyone then. And a good pair of goggles for when you have to open the lid while the machine is running. Also for general help I would look at Reddit. There are a few laser subreddits that have been extremely informative just reading through…if you haven’t done so already that is. Good luck!

I like to hit the ground running! I would go to Walmart or anywhere cheap with stable inventory. Buy coasters. Feel the pressure of framing an actual product. Make a nice graphic for a friend or family member in a relationship and keep testing, trying and learning until engraving one that looks good enough to take a picture of and use it to create a product for Etsy. But day 1, I used an old broken cutting board to learn the laser and to get over my fear of the laser. And don’t forget that you can always turn the machine off when it’s running. I did that on my first engraving as there was so much smoke and I was using it inside.
