The NFL is the unquestioned king of American Sports. The NBA however, while definitely still a distant second place, is seen by some to be closing the gap. Concerns regarding the safety of Football as well as the NFL's dodgy reputation has some questioning the Sport's long term future. So could the NBA ever be as popular as the NFL?

That's not even true though. Germany and the UK have already established a strong NFL presence and those are 2 of the 3 biggest economies in Europe....lo and behold they are also 2 of the 3 biggest populaces. But as it stands the NBA has been stagnating severely for about a decade in the US, they are in danger of falling away. Btw, did you know that the World Series is still more popular than the NBA Finals? Basketball might not even be more popular than baseball still.

@Scott B the problem with "football" is simple: their father rugby 🏉 exists. I probably underestimate the impact of the NFL, but i believe that, internationally, basketball will always be more popular than American football 🏈 (that is another thing: for American football to succeed, I believe the need to seriously rebrand its name: after all, internationally, another sport is called football ⚽️

@@ulisesvilasanchez1996 That's probably true that basketball as a sport will remain more popular (it is safer, cheaper to get into, etc) but that doesn't guarantee the NBA will be over the NFL. Europe has a lot of competitive popular leagues that overshadow the NBA there. NFL doesn't have that. You're probably likely to see the NFL try something like "NFL Europe" again (which is why the NFL is big in Germany where many NFL Europe teams were from when it existed) with a rebranded name for the sport more than the NFL rebranding its name. But you might be right that a rebrand would do them better internationally.

@@scottb3034 That's a crazy fact that I did not know. I love baseball, but the monotony is excruciating at times, and it's the kind of sport I definitely love to play more than watch. Football is opposite though, and there's a large appeal with the variety in it, the action, the intensity, and the stakes. Those aspects make the game seem surreal, which is why it's so useful to keep people at bay and not questioning the severe corruption of the government. Anyways, that fact you gave is wild. I imagine it can't be by an insane margin, but definitely not to "close either".

@@hihunter7 it's a couple billion between MLB and NBA. the gap between football and MLB is 5. Baseball is also the 2nd most attended sport in the US. Baseball has the 2nd most valuable teams although the average value of an NBA team is more (this means the NBA is more consistent across the league but teams like the Yankees and red sox rival some NFL teams in value but also have some very unvaluable teams). Average salary of the MLB is higher than all leagues but the NBA. Baseball has the most successful minor league in sports. And yeah, as mentioned the World Series outdraws the Finals almost annually (jordan's tenure flipped that on its head a few times). Also saw some data that says New York, LA, Chicago, Houston and Philly local markets (the 5 biggest in the US) are massively skewed toward baseball viewership too. Baseball just does a poor job marketing itself and its stars to make it seem like they are falling behind. Plus as you said they have some issues with excitement. But they are working on it.

The thing with NBA is that even if a player makes the most incredible play in the 3rd quarter, it still doesn’t effect the game. Like they can still lose. Unlike NFL, where a players play or even a mistake no matter which quarter deeply impacts the game. NFL is much more intense, plays are much more important and strategies are much more effective which produces a edge of your seat game. Unlike basketball where you can legitimately go straight to the 4th quarter and watch from there

As someone who watches both sports so intensely, it may seem that way because NFL Football is a lot slower than NBA basketball, so it's easier to make out those game changing plays , but that's definitely not the case, basketball is a game of runs, and is way more momentum based, so it doesn't stop, however 1 play can change the entire landscape of the game, nba plays are way more climactic, where as NFL plays a lot of things have to go right for u to win a game, your quarterback can have an excellent passing game or your receiver can be cooking the defense, but if the defense falls short it can cause a loss of the entire team despite the quarterback having nothing to with that If you stop to think about it some of the biggest most impactful players in sport are in basketball, Lebron's block on Iguadola, Kobe's lob to Shaq, Ray Allen's 3, Jordan's push shot in the finals, magics baby hook, and so many more. You can even hear it with all of the emotions in the commentators

I live in Serbia. Most people here play and watch basketball. We didnt start watching the NBA because of basketball, it was the other way around (in other words when we have good Serbian players in the NBA such as Jokić or Divac and Stojaković back in the day, we watch the NBA, otherwise most of us don't watch the NBA). Basketball is only trailing soccer in popularity here. Also, we have the same clubs in soccer and basketball. Red Star Belgrade club exists both in soccer and in basketball. This is how European clubs work in general, this is not specific to Serbia. This means that fans of Real Madrid soccer club are also kind of pushed into cheering for Real Madrid basketball club as well. When it comes to American football, nobody plays nor watches that sport here. That sport is regarded as a dangerous, violent, foreign, American sport.

I mean we just talking in the US nfl is the more popular sport in the US than the nba. The NBA is more superstar driven with mid rivalries no dedicated fanbase we see fans be fans of teams because there favorite player plays there. Also long regular season in today's league you don't know if the superstars are playing or not and the lack of important regular season games also no matter how big of a nba fan you are you can name the division where teams play for. Shorter season with December football being important for teams who can't win there division. Rivalries are still hot like cowboys vs eagles or steelers vs ravens tons more. Also it won't be long for the nfl to become popular outside US.

One reason I could guess why football is still king in America is that all of the Sunday games and a few Monday and Thursday games are on network tv for everyone to watch. NBA games might get shown in Sunday afternoons and Friday nights, otherwise the rest are pretty much on cable and more people don't have cable subscriptions in general. Unless you follow the league none of the playoffs are on regular tv until the Finals, so you're not getting casuals seeing that level of intense play until then

The NFL will always be king for 3 reasons: 1. It’s an easy sport for any fan to follow. It’s 17 games, once a week, mostly on Sunday. Every other sport you have to follow your team multiple games every week for 6 months. An NFL fan needs to watch 1 game per week from September to February. 2. Fantasy Football: This keeps young kids invested in watching channels like Red Zone and other games to track all their players. 3. Gambling: Gambling is a HUGE reason why the NFL gets crazy TV ratings. Don’t underestimate the amount of degenerate gamblers who will watch a Thursday night game between the Jets and Jaguars.

You're more or less correct on that. The NBA has a massive worldwide following, with tons of international players making strides in the league. Guys like Yao Ming and Dirk Nowitzki definitely helped spread basketball's popularity across the world. The NFL, meanwhile, is extremely popular here in the US, with niche followings in the UK and Germany. As far as I know, Gridiron football in general is only really popular in the US, Canada, and Australia, with each country playing its own version of it. That said, NFL revenue numbers far outstrip any other sports league in the world because of how much it's commercialized. Games have something like 16 ad breaks per match. I grew up in the uk and automatically was a football or soccer fan for as long as I can remember. I became a basketball fan in 2016 with the warriors cavs finals and I think I’m more a basketball fan now than soccer. I watch all types of sports especially big events. One sport I can’t watch in the regular season is nfl simply because of the breaks in action. I get that soccer feels extremely slow paced as it looks like not much is happening especially to fans who don’t understand what’s happening (same can be said about the nfl). But watching the nfl for me and most people I know is such a painful experience. It’s a 5 second play then a break after EVERY play. It might be an attention span issue but whenever I try watch a regular season nfl game I switch to a different sport when I see 3 5 second plays with breaks in between them then a commercial break. There are a lot of comments about how slow paced a soccer match is but at any point someone could kick the ball long for a goal and the importance of one goal is significantly higher than any other sport since it’s not that rare to see a game end 1-0. I get that in the nfl there can be an interception that leads to a touchdown, I don’t know how often this happens, but I can’t imagine it’s as common as soccer so the anticipation just isn’t there. Yes basketball moves at breakneck speed but for new fans they’d rather watch constant action than 5 second plays that are followed by breaks in action to call the following play. This is why I don’t think the nfl can ever be more popular than basketball globally. I would still prefer to watch the Super Bowl than a single nba finals game though due to the significance of that one game

They follow the record because it only changes once a week. I have had this explained to me by many different casual fans. You bring up other sports and they say "Ptsh I can't keep up with all that". Look at fantasy football vs hockey. You need to quit a day job to be active in fantasy hockey. Same with the NBA. Every game has the importance of one 6th of a 17 game season.

@@scottb3034 ratings are misleading. most of nba viewership come from youtube. so yea ratings are down but viewership and revenue is up. so I'd say lebron was part of growing nbas younger demographic. especially during cavs vs warriors rivalries. So ratings will definitely drop if RSN model is basically doing worse and worse each year. Lebron is the probably the main reason for higher revenue and viewership (if not the main reason he had a big impact) from about 2004-2019. luca is more of a guess but i'm not sure as of late because of how he complains during and after a play. even lebron isn't as bad as he is. also will be a spike in viewership for wemby. anyway you get my point. don't use ratings to judge how big a sport is. china has a larger viewer base than in the US. and ratings tend to skew towards people who grew up before the "internet/youtube" blowup. cause there the ones still paying for cable not the younger and wanna say larger audience (

@@tiredquokka I don't think Doncic alone will carry the brand. the crop of international stars will. Doncic might lead that group though. The younger demographic isn't the largest yet. In a decade or two they will be (because they will take over the majority of the 18-54 demographic which is the largest in television for instance) and I am sure ratings will be adjusted to included streaming views...that said while you might be right that YT kills accurate looks at viewership, that also still applies to MLB and NFL since they too also stream their games (especially the NFL whose thursday games every week are ONLY on amazon/twitch which is a massively young audience skewed platform...the NFL is actually forcing their older audience to learn the tech). So while the NBA might have deceiving viewership, so does the MLB and NFL that lead them. Alternatively you can look at revenues of the leagues and MLB and the NFL are the two biggest singular leagues in the world in revenue earned (2nd and 3rd if you lump the soccer leagues into one big sum). Lastly going back to ratings, I will say that I had completely neglected that streaming isn't counted in ratings, so I will admit to that but I am still unsure of how will the league grew in viewership in 20 years....at the very least it's had a problem since the global crisis of 2019-20 (then again almost every sport has). The NBA wasn't more popular in the 80s. What made the 80s so important/special is that those 80s stars you mentioned showed the league was worth watching and investing in. CBS wasn't showing the Finals live in the 1980s until 86 or 87 and was pre-empting it for other programs even. But they brought the NBA into the MLB/NFL discussion and forced the networks to show the league live. It reached its peak in the 1990s when the NBA was outdrawing the MLB in ratings (before falling behind again post-MJ) but it never seriously threatened the NFL in ratings and revenue and is also behind the MLB in revenue. I agree about the salary cap...but think the schedule allows fans to think their teams have a chance until week 8-10 (unless they are the worst team in the league). It also helps that players don't run the asylum yet in the NFL which harms the NBA product.

No. Even with the mishaps in ownership and with the commissioner, the NFL has stayed the same or grown. The NBA cannot afford the same and needs to be better managed. Ideally, for the individuals who makes up the sport, having more player power is good. But for a professional league that has to sell itself to networks and to the public, it is better maintained if the owners are able to prioritize growth. The NBA is losing site of it. I also don’t buy the idea that people really care about CTE or how “brutal” football is. Boxing and MMA are still relatively popular & nobody bats an eye or really makes a fuss over the brutality of it all or the condition those guys are in later in life.

The NBA's ratings and revenue are dropping in the states....that is not "increasing in popularity". People don't like the disloyal, legacy hounds of this NBA generation, a lot of them hate their social justice outcries (people prefer their athletes just be athletes...if you want to be an activist then get into politics) and most of all they are bored to death of Lebron, the Warriors and the defenseless gameplay (certainly caters to the finesse Europeans that hate playing defense, hate physicality and love their superstar players)....too bad the NBA has to compete with Spanish pro leagues, Italian proleagues, Slovakian pro leagues, Croatian pro leagues, etc just for coverage in those countries. MLB and the NFL don't have to worry about that. (Giannis [and he wasn't the first one] even has said he wasn't sure he wanted to go to the NBA....some draw the NBA is if international stars prefer their home leagues). @@scottb3034 Who cares about what the attendance the MLB draws in the present and the past, we are talking about the future. Look at the social media following of baseball's biggest stars like A-Rod, Ohtani and Trout, they have lower counts than some NBA benchwarmers. Fact is that the MLB doesn't have a young following which will lead to it's demise in the longhaul but not presently. They'll eventually go bankrupt once the ratings plummet as soon as the boomers kick the bucket. Especially when considering that their contracts are unsustainable and their union won't accept any paycuts. The NBA's popularity in China alone is more than MLB's entire Far East and Latin American market and that's without accounting for the NBA's popularity in Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia. The MLB's following in Asia is mainly centered around Japan and only a few small Carribean and Central American countries in Latin America. Secondly, I'm from Europe and I know how big the NBA is here compared to the MLB and NFL, it's not even comparable. Only Germans and a few Brits care about the NFL and no one watches the the MLB. The NBA is followed throughout Europe and the local basketball leagues are not watched much, only the Euroleague is. Thirdly, you can't account for NBA ratings in the traditional sense like you can with the MLB and NFL precisely because the older demographic of those leagues watch traditional cable and TV, whereas the more younger demographic of the NBA use legal and illegal streaming more. But still, if you account for total numbers, domestic and international then the NBA dwarfs the NFL and MLB in ratings. I do agree with you in that the general public don't care for SJW antics from athletes but that hasn't been too much of a detriment to the NBA, funny how you didn't point out that the same is occuring in the NFL as well and yet the last SB had the third highest ratings. So that point is a little overstated. Anyway, overall the NBA are in the best position going forward out of all three leagues, they have both an older and a younger demographic, the league is only getting more popular globally especially since international players are increasingly dominating the league and after the 2024 new TV deal, some top players will be earning near 90 million per season, which will subsequently make even bench players earn 40 million. The MLB with their 15 year 250 million contracts can't compete and let's not even talk about the NFL. You've got 6p per game roll players earning more than some QB's in the NFL lol. I know if I were to choose then I would be an NBA player all day rather than being tobacco-snorting fat baseball player in a damn four hour long 200 games per season dead senior citizen sport or have my brain scrambled on an unguaranteed contract within a savage sport like American football, that's for sure! There could be a family with 10 followers, 4 followers follow the dad, 3 the mom and 3 the son...the dad is technically the most followed one in the family but that is still a pretty small number. Or it's is simply a product of being the biggest league. That doesn't preclude, for instance, the spanish leagues being more popular in SPAIN...and that spanish people follow that league first and foremost and the NBA is just a cursory interest. Also, citing social media means very little. It's a terrible barometer. Great, I didn't say the NFL has caught up to the NBA yet. I merely said that the foreign basketball leagues are more popular in the foreign territories and the NFL doesn't have that problem. Also that in the territories that the NFL *has* poured resourced into they've eclipsed or are breathing down the NBA's neck in popularity (AKA the 2 biggest markets/populations outside of russia in Europe--UK and Germany). If/when the NFL expands further, the NBA better be prepared or it may lose its grip on USA league dominance in europe. Not only is your comparison not analogous (the "bubble" finals did not occur at the same time as the Super Bowl--Super Bowl was pre-Pandemic, the Finals were in the autumn of the pandemic) but unless you provide numbers from an objective source I'm going to call bullshit on your claim. Or better yet, I'll just claim the Super Bowl was watched by more, it's the most watched singular event in the world every year outside of a World Cup Final (and has 1/5 of your purported finals viewership in American television viewers alone).... Even people who don't watch football, tune in for Superbowl. Also it's a bit fascinating how the Superbowl experience is built on the fact that it's PPV. NBA, you get games every couple of days and the Xmas game is just seen as sort of, background noise while the fam does Xmas things. I think by the game, more people stream any NBA game than any NFL game, so there's that. It still doesn't close the gap though, and Superbowl is still king.

@@angelopillai2553that’s not exactly true. super bowl gets a lot of views because in the USA and Canada people have super bowl parties where a bunch of people go to one persons house and they watch the super bowl together. they watch the whole thing including the halftime show. super bowl parties are a big reason the super bowl gets many views. you cannot have a party to watch the final game in the NBA because you don’t know which game will be the last game in the finals, unless it goes to game 7. also the nfl is a better league for women to watch because women tend to enjoy talking to each other and socializing more and that’s easy to do when football is on because of the slow pace. with basketball you have to be constantly watching or else you will miss something.

I’m British so didn’t grow up with either sport - so as an outsider I think I have a fairly balanced view Imo the biggest difference is the parity. There’s so many small market NBA teams that feel invisible to the point that they may as well not exist, and with ‘player empowerment’ and the super teams even if those teams do land a star player it won’t be long before they leave to inevitably join the Lakers or form a super team. There’s some rare exceptions like Giannis, Jokic and Dame so maybe things will change. It also appears way harder to build through the draft. NFL you routinely find players on day 3 of the draft - including Tom Brady, outside of Jokic how many STARS are outside the top 20 picks? It just feeds into crummy teams tanking which is no fun for anyone, and makes them even more invisible. The NBA will never overtake the NFL in America but I think it could potentially over take it overall - the key - a World Cup. Look at the popularity of the FIFA World Cup, if basketball could ever get near to those levels where every 4 years there are ~5/6 teams with hopes of winning, stacked with the best players in the world then I think it has the potential to become the Worlds #2 (maybe 3 behind cricket) sport. We are seeing now that a worldwide team would be able to give Team USA a game, and would arguably be favoured. If down the line Canada, Spain, France, a Balkan country, (most likely candidates) could develop a team able to compete with Team USA then I think it would skyrocket basketball in all of those countries. Chuck in teams with one or 2 star players and some decent players from other leagues (Greece, Cameroon, more Balkans) and you would have a proper World Cup

Fair and balanced take. FWIW, the NBA is struggling to pass the MLB in America but internationally it seems to sell better. The NBA needs to get on this World Cup though because the NFL has a hold of Germany and is seeping into your homeland. Anyway, Cheers.

@@scottb3034 The other thing is over in Europe we are used to 'Leagues' with cup competitions on the side. The NFL the 17 games are short enough where every game matters and is crucial in deciding your seeding/Homefield. Sure, in the NBA at least every team plays each other home and away but we can't grasp the concept of games not really mattering, to the point where a top player just won't play for multiple games a year because 1 game has so little meaning and the prize for having the best record is nothing, in fact, it brings further derision if you then don't win the title. The NBA could become popular with regards to the playoffs - although the whole 7 game series will take some adjustment, but the NBA regular season is unlikely to ever become mainstream popular over here (Europe). A competitive world cup every game would matter and the playoffs are the only hope.

@@KC1996LFC Excellent, excellent points that I agree with. NBA was at its most popular/liked internationally when it went Olympic with its Dream Team and the Olympic format is a lot like World Cup play with pools and then single elimination tournament. Unfortunately the NBA will never adopt that for their official league but if they sponsored a world cup it would print money and popularity in europe and allow European fans to root for their home team in the tournament instead of a native player on a random NBA team. This is something ripe to exploit and the NBA is dragging its feet for some reason. I am glad you see the value, entertainment and drama of an NFL season, but I guess that makes sense given you are a football fan of I would guess the Premier League who have a similarish premium placed on regular season and playoff games.

@@scottb3034 The Olympics are great, but right now it’s pretty much just the USA invitational. It’s only a surprise if they don’t win. An international all star team could give team USA a game, they have stars but depth is a huge problem. PG - Shai/Jamal Murray SG - Luka/Bogdanovic SF - Giannis/Wiggins PF - Lauri/Siakam/Sabonis C - Jokic/Embiid/Wemby I’m probably forgetting someone obvious It’s going in the right direction, but it will take time.

For the parity part The NBA by the default as a sport it's easier to win as the better team Basketball is just a very underdog unfriendly sport Football the real football is one of the most underdog favorable sport an upset is always possible Leicester as a reference or Celtics beating Messi and Barcelona
