Joe finally tracked down one of his Holy Grail vinyl records... but it's warped and unplayable! Can the Record Pi save this super-rare but damaged pre-Capitol Beach Boys single?
We also talk about the history of this 45 rpm disc, containing the songs Surfin' and Luau.

Too bad we didn’t have that technology in the 60’s and 70’s. Quite often we used to buy records that were warped and then it wasn’t as easy as it is today to exchange or having our money back after buying a record. Thanks for sharing your video.

Glad to hear of your success. I love my record pi. It takes several sessions most of the times but it has worked on every single record I have tried so far. It was a great purchase and has just about paid for itself so far👍🏼

Hi, I am new to your music room, Very interesting subject, I saw something back in 2001 I think it was somebody I used to pieces of glass , if I remember rightly they were half inch thick and he put the record in between them and put them in the oven electric oven not gas, I believe around half an hour around 150 seems a lot to me, I think it went in cold and then slowly heat it up then it was left to cool down. I love my vinyl I do not have a lot and I normally played on a Linn LP 12, which I purchased back in the mid 80s secondhand around about £350 all might have been a bit more but I can’t remember, Just recently electronics at the back top where the motor kept stalling so I have been out and purchased a cheaper record deck the time being, As I now live in France, I’ve got to get them from UK. As you probably can imagine the parts are very expensive though I’ll have to wait for the time being, A year ago I was given a load of LPs and 45s records. Back from the 60s and 80s I still have not gone through them yet. I enjoyed your territorial on how to flatten vinyl records, And I look forward to looking and listening to more of your music tutorials. PHIL FROM THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOULIN FRANCE.

7 inches seem perfect for this device. Forgiving. The act of trying to save any album is worth it. No matter the value. Great vid

I've had mine for over a year now and I have raised the temperature to 135 and I bake for 4-6 hours. Then I let cool overnight with great results. First time seeing your channel and I really enjoyed your review of the RecordPi.

Put the warped record on a hard surface. Take a metal pie tin and place it over the record. Take a hair dryer and heat the pie tin evenly and press on the pie tin. I tried this with a MAJOR warped record and it, totally, removed the warp.

Very interesting and great vid. I believe this single also came out on a label prior to the one shown. Beach Boys fan I am and just subbed your channel.

pressure after the proper heat is key while it cools. Some vinyl matrix has a different 'melting' point than other companies.. so yes you have to experiment. Good work, nice single.

A late comment for you. Well done. Perseverance paid off for you. As for the comment you made about others saying why are you bothering, don't let anyone tell you to stop doing something that brings you happiness. Great results all around 👍

First, records made of styrene like your record don't usually warp. They often come new with slight straight cracks from the record cooling too quickly. I have experimented with leaving a record out on the patio, laying on a piece of heavy/thick glass on 105 degree California summer day and nothing happened to the record during the 5 hours it was out in the sun. Now, when flattening a record, I find that the magic heat number is 135 degrees, from experience. When records are pressed, the pucks are heated to 270 degrees, so half that would be a nice target. Styrene records, like yours, are injection molded. The labels are glued on after the record has been pressed. With vinyl records, the labels are applied to the stampers and are molded into the records. No glue is necessary.

Nice find! "Luau" was first issued on LP in the early 70's when the Hite Morgan recordings were licensed to Scepter/Springboard. There were a handful of "greatest hits" albums pressed between the Scepter, Springboard, Orbit, and Wand labels, all legitimate issues. The Wand/Orbit albums contain liner notes on the rear cover from Dorinda Morgan.

Excellent! I have Luau on the Hite Collection CD, but was pretty sure it never appeared on a non-compilation album.

Way to go Joe. You saved it. Joe have you ever wondered why the album version of Surfin on Surfin Safari is faster Then the 45. It's like they were trying to make the guys sound younger.. Joe I'm so glad that I subscribed to your channel thank you.

Thanks, Mark! I think Murray Wilson asked that the LP version be speeded up so that (as you said) the guys would sounded even younger. Seems ridiculous considering how young they actually were at the time.

I was looking at getting one prior to seeing your videos. I'm pretty convinced but the price is still a bit too high for me. I knew I should have jumped at the $250 price, but that was during the holiday spending window. I really wish this was available for $150. I have no idea of the material and labor costs, but I think it'd sell easier if it was sub $200. That's where my comfort level is. I'm not into rare records like you, so for $300-$350 I can purchase a bunch of replacement records. I buy most of my records used, so the return on investment would take quite a while. For my warped new records (which is all too frequent these days) I just exchange them. Thanks for the update and I look forward to seeing what else you put out. I like your easy going style.

I have found that playing warped records - even slightly warped - on turntables with counterweights on the arm is generally impossible. Even if the tracking weight is increased, they still jump. Older decks that have spring regulated downforce tend to cope much better. I have a Sinatra LP with a huge edge warp where the groove is pulled inwards by a few mm, yet on an old Garrard 2025TC with Sonotone cartridge it will play without a single jump. Tracking weight is not very high either (4g or so).
@AverageJoeVinyl
@AverageJoeVinyl Жыл бұрын
I'm sure that plays a part. My cartridge (Ortofon 2m Blue) has a tracking weight of only 1.8g, so it's very prone to skips if the vinyl isn't flat. I was very glad to get this playable without having to increase the tracking force. Thanks for watching!

Interesting. I use a DJ cart stylus for my warped discs 3 to 4 grams will play most warps and if not the vinyl gets binned, but no longer i wish i had known oabout the Pi earlier

I see a lot of reviews for this record pi. I think the real issue I see with this is the price. If I had a toaster and I am telling everyone how awesome it is and then I tell people this toaster on a good day cost $250 the conversation comes to a full stop. They might come over and enjoy my wonderful toast now and again, but they are not going to buy it. My point is I think you might have bought this to be a good friend and that makes you a good person 😀 .

That’s heat damage. If the edge is warped like that, there’s no fix for it.

Does the record play over the warp spot and you can hear a static sound based where warp is? I had a record that somehow had a warp on edge close enough to be a thumb pressing where needle would shift back and forth at warp with an audible static at that section. One day I got brave and used an iron (not directly on vinyl) to flatten out the curve, the curve went down, but still where warp was you can hear the audible static which was louder than music on record. Ended up tossing the record.

Hey I apologize for the random unrelated questions but I was curious. Is it possible to put any cartridge on any tonearm? My mom had accidentally messed my needle up and I wanted to swap my AT95E to the Nagaoka MP-110 and didn't know if my Fluance RT81 was compatible, I don't even know if compatibility is an issue nonetheless, any help is appreciated.
@AverageJoeVinyl
@AverageJoeVinyl Жыл бұрын
The Fluance is pretty darn upgradeable, so I doubt you'd have a problem. Not every tone-arm can have a new cartridge added. You'll have a hard-time upgrading a Victrola or Crosley suitcase-style player, for instance. But any moderate or high-end turntable should allow you to do so, and the Fluance should be fine. Thanks for watching!
@Grimwriggler
@Grimwriggler Жыл бұрын
Yes the Fluence uses the standard SME / Technics type headshell for half inch carts Both the Audio Ttechnica and Nagaoka are half inch mount carts. you can swap them over and the MP-110 will sound much smoother over the AT 95E

You are actually fortunate that it was a very tiny edge warp because if it was a large warp going through the entire record, with all the manipulation and attempts that you made, there would be a good probability that the record would crack. About that Candix record, I’m still kicking myself that I passed up on it forty years ago. I did not want to pay $50 for it!
