Myanmar is original and respectful word. Burma is actully BAMAA. It is little less compare to Myanmar. In Burmese language we use Myanmar only. After wards Myanmar govt. Changed officially from burma to Myanmar. Like this Rangoon to Yangon. Actually Yangon is YAN KON. This yankon also new and original name of this city was dagon. The king Alongphayar drove out the enemies and rename it as yankon. YAN KON YAN--- enemy or enmity then KON --- finished, completed or empty. I born in Myanmar and studied there for 10 years. Then I came to india and continue my study. Now I am retired engineer from Indian central government. India is good country and mother to all countries. But we have enemy within.

I live in Thailand and have a number of Burmese friends. They call themselves Burmese and usually refer to Myanmar as Burma. The Northern Thais think the best cooking in Myanmar is from the Shan State which borders Thailand on the North.
@therock8224
@therock8224 3 жыл бұрын
@@topixfromthetropix1674 That's very interesting, but isn't the cuisine there rather similar to northern Thai cuisine? The other thing about Shan State is that, even outside of current corona virus restrictions, the corridor from Mae Sai (Chiang Rai)/Tachilek (border town on the Burmese side) to Kengtung/Mong Lar and further west is still one of the least well traveled parts of SE Asia. The restrictions on foreigners using the Kengtung to Taunggyi road, except for short distances from either end probably explain this. An article in the Myanmar Times published just weeks ago (I think it was late 2020) suggested that the Burmese government is keen on opening up this road to foreign travelers once corona virus restrictions are lifted. So, in a sense, they've come full circle given the theme of this documentary is talking about how the Burma road will open up the region to foreign tourism. Same thing with highway 4, between Kengtung and Taunggyi. Only a handful of foreigners have ever seen it, nearly all of whom required a permit and many of whom went on an escorted tour driving their own vehicles. The Top Gear (UK) team boasted they were the first foreigners to be allowed to use the road; not sure if that's true, but very few others had been before them.

Great documentary, just beautiful. A few basic errors were made, that a simple fact check could have resolved before the film was released: The border town depicted in China is RUILI not Muse. Muse is the town on the Burmese side. I've been to the latter twice and came close to the former on an earlier occasion, but not actually visited, once. Apparently I was one of the only foreigners to visit Muse in a year or more on my first visit and Chinese visitors aside, I doubt more than a couple of hundred foreigners have ever been to Muse. Days after my second visit in 2015, foreigners were no longer allowed to visit Muse due to civil unrest and that has been the case ever since. The Sino-Burmese border is planned to open to travelers/foreigners but this could be years away (notwithstanding corona virus restrictions). The narrator has an uncanny ability to grossly underestimate travel times between places. At the time the film was released in 2007, there was an expressway connecting Kunming with Dali, but beyond that the road was a winding, mountainous mess. It would have easily taken 15+ hours to travel between Kunming and the border town of Ruili at the time. By late 2010 when I traveled to Mangshi, the capital of the district where Ruili is located, about one and a half hour's drive to the west, the expressway had been extended nearly to Baoshan. My bus journey took roughly 10 hours to reach Mangshi. On the return to Kunming, I took a flight that took just 40 mins. The expressway has since been extended to Ruili, but as signs in Kunming tell you, that's 800km away (now shortened to 730km)! This will still take you 8h45m according to Google Maps. This is because many sections are winding, with reduced driving speeds of 80-100km/h; it's 80km/h when driving through the numerous tunnels along the route. A far cry from the 5h claimed by the narrator! From Bagan to the nearest border, it may not be very far as the crow flies [to India or Bangladesh] but whatever road goes there, takes forever, even today. Back in 2007, it would have taken you the better part of an entire day (something like 20 hours) to travel from Bagan to the nearest border crossing (not open to foreigners at the time). The Chin State/Mizoram border crossing at Rikhawadar (town on the Burmese side)/Zokhawtar (Indian side) opened to foreigners back in 2018. Once corona virus travel restrictions are lifted, it is expected this crossing will once again open to everyone. Another border crossing further north, Tamu, also opened in the same year.

I dont think burma resisted any changes but the fact is burma wasn't given any chance for changes in decades.otherwise like any other developing country it too would have been a fast developing country.

They better plant more trees, though. It a simple doable thing. Why most countries dont plant new trees? Its lazy and irresponsible!

Most don’t plant more trees because they want the land cleared to farm or build on. Only the Government seems to them to have power so they do as they are told. They need leaders (not Senators or Presidents) near their own level to build havens, to plant trees, to just do what will benefit them in ten years, fifteen. Most people can’t really visualize much beyond the next year, the next harvest. It takes someone with the ability to look forward with vision.

They clear the land to grow opium poppy. Without roads perishable goods cannot be transported while opium doesn't require refrigeration or electricity. You have to consider that everything is connected. I suggest you guys do some travelling to learn about the ways of the world, one of the comments here didn t even know that Burma is Myanmar. I mean this kind of knowledge is the most basic, education is vital for the world to become a better place. 🕉 My blessings to all of you, maybe we meet on the Burma Road. Love and peace ❤🌺🌼🦋

This is why I hate about government and politician especially Burmese government, all they care about is wealth and power. There are still many human being which people don't even know their existence unless they watch discovery history like right now and stuff. I am from Myanmar and I know what the reality is, I saw with my own eyes. After watching this video, I realize that while there are still many struggling to survive, people who are greedy are not satisfied with what they already have. Ughhhh, Life is suck.

The people need a leader near their own level to lead them. Recent history shows tight, repressive governments don’t last long, maybe ten to fifteen years, which is long by their standards. Then comes chaos and usually another form of the same thing. The leaders of the next government have to know what to do to stop the cycle and cause their people to want a share in deciding their future. That is a road that must be paved with enough food, money plowed back into their country rather than in off-shore accounts. It is hard work for the first government.

They can't do logging, they can't do mining, they can't do argiculture but they're allowed to do tourism. And so the documentary concludes that tourism is the answer. Nobody has any imagination at all.
@soewintun7477
@soewintun7477 3 жыл бұрын
The militay has been doing mining for deades as well as logging. Argriculture is the main income of the country. Tourism only started when nld became a half government because half of the power is still in the hands of the military. Military generals are billionairs and the countries economy is still in their hands. Myanmar people support nld because they look after the peoples interest and infrastructure of the country has improved as well as the economy. Myanmar people do not support the military generals they are for themselves and their family they do not care about the people or country. They are obstructionist for the nld government and the people of Myanmar. They are tyrants who will do anything for money and power. Myanmar situation is very delicate with two governments and the people are still suffering.

The irony is that was the last time anyone living along said road saw any significant number of foreigners! On both sides of the border, we're talking about the remotest parts of both countries. Seems hard to believe there was a time when thousands of foreigners (both Asians and westerners) went to that region. For a totally different purpose of course.

I cannot agree more. It seems the ones that claim they are most poor are the ones that have abandoned their customs and growing their own food and moved on to destroying the rainforest to grow opium to sell and get addicted to themselves, therefore digging themselves into an even worse whole than they were in in the first place. ugh.... western culture will never stop its train wreck of an influence. (I guess that includes china too)
