Sky's Tom Clarke asks if £20bn of govt funding can revolutionise science and research in the United Kingdom, to create the next 'Silicon Valley' right here.
Until now, the UK has not always been successful at getting science and innovation from the laboratory experiment stage to practical production to boost the economy.

What I find remarkable as European is that we don't really have an equivalent to Silicon Valley in Europe, might as well have it in UK but remember how Silicon Valley was formed. It was a sparsely populated area that which meant cheap cost to start a company there, now Silicon Valley is on the diametrical opposite side on the socioeconomical scale. So the site can't be in heavily populated areas like London, that won't fly anywhere!

True but it was not only that. Add a mix preferential tax/law to run company, strong academic environment with a lot of freedom and last but not least hippies. Embrace entrepreneurship, scientific enquiry and free thought, marinate it all with LSD and that's how Silicon Valley can emerge. Government funding had nothing to go with it.

It wasn't simply a sparse population, it was world class universities nearby, a superb logistical infrastructure, massive military spending that drove a need for technology, a desirable area to live and access to funds on easy terms. Plus a very relaxed attitude to immigration by skilled workers. Many of the products were easily exported by air freight to a huge domestic market that was unified by one set of standards. I was there at the time of the rapid expansion and neither the UK nor the EU meet those criteria. By the late 80s we were selling more products to Californian customers than the entirety of Europe.

How do they keep the costs down? The UK imports 90% of its raw materials. And how are they selling it to their biggest market, the EU post Brexit?
@vrclckd-zz3pv

The raw materials used for chips are extremely cheap. Chips are primarily made of Silicone which is easily extracted from sand. The rest is gold for the traces and in this specific case Carbon for the graphene. The biggest cost in manufacturing chips is acquiring laser lithography machines which are incredibly expensive and become obsolete quick, as well as funding the R&D for the design of the chips. The EU might be the biggest market for consumer electronics but Shenzhen, China is by far the biggest hub for electronic production. Any individual components like chips, capacitors, etc, will likely be sold to a Chinese company (or a Chinese subsidiary of a western company for tax purposes) and then assembled in Shenzhen before being shipped around the world to be sold.

Uk did try and failed getting into the semiconductor space.. it is not something that any government has much success in nurturing.. trying to compete on the cutting edge with tsmc, Samsung and US is just not feasible, mid end with global foundry and the Chinese are unprofitable and low end chips are pretty much pointless. Unless we pull a RISC as in architecture as grapheme as to fab, we are just going to be wasting money.. it’s not going to be easy and this government wouldn’t last long enough to promote confidence

The EU is already in the semiconductor industry just in the early phase in production phase. We got ASML and zeiss two extremly important companies in the semi conductor industry. We just produce a loot of manufacturing tooling and beat our competitors. Japan tried to compete with ASML but now ASML is close to the sole producer when it comes to lithography machines. Sad that the UK did not want to be part of the EU since its EU or more specifically european combined cooperation that competes in the international market like airbus as a example where multiple air manufacturing companies combined to compete with boeing and now airbus is leading in share of the global market. We shoot ourself in the foot when we priorities national interests over EU interests it makes us less competitive but decides to be stupid. We could have our hermis space plane during 2003 and launched our own astronauts but decided to follow the us and not develope our own capabilities since no one wanted to put the resources necessary to complete the project.

Investment in Tech development is essential for the UK's future. To avoid having to rely on foreign banking and Military exports as the main source of income. That said, the UK will never be able to compete with China and the US, on this front. The UK just doesn't have the cheap labour, Cheap materials and/or Financial resources. Silicone Valley had the US market / resources on its door, without import duties.. Joining the CPTPP will help, but, is unlike to elevate the UK to world leader. Following similar model's to Japan, is I think, the UK's, best course.

Technology gravitates to the market that can sustain it in terms of returns for the research effort in creating it. That's why, in light of Brexit, this gizmo is more likely to be produced in the US than in the UK. Pre 2012 there would have been competition from the US, EU, and China to acquire it. Now it's just the US, and they'll acquire it as cheaply as possible.

It already is. The US is clearly the leader in chip design with most of the chips manufactured in Taiwan are actually designed by US companies such as apple and google, but is also home to chip manufacturing. The US currently produces 12% of global output, but the recently enacted CHIPS and Science Act will change that. The law has set aside $52 billion in incentives, research and development and training. Signed into law only in August of this year, it's already having a significant impact. TSMC has committed to build a $12 billion facility in Arizona that will come online in 2024. Intel is building a $20 billion facility in Ohio, and Micron just announced a $100 billion facility in New York.
