Independent venues are arguing that merch splits from artist merch are crucial to them staying in business. Recently, Live Nation released a program “On The Road Again,” which would give 100% of merch to the artists. In addition, they are giving $1,500 to independent artists for each performance to stay on the road. The National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), is arguing that Live Nation is not doing this out of the kindness of their heart, but to squeeze out the competition. The independent venues, which are the lifeblood of the music industry. Can independent venues really not survive without merch cuts? Let’s look at the economics and some background info.
