Honestly for not much more than the LG you can get the "executive bluetooth speaker" kit from parts-express and it wipes the floor with this this. It has a 5-1/4" long throw sub with a 8" passive radiator and 4" coaxials to handle the highs. I built one and was kinda blown away. It's a lot fucking bigger though if that wasn't obvious.

I love this concept, and the design is really fun! As an audio geek, i did notice a few things. - the tweeter appears to be pointing straight up, which is going to result in an unbalanced sound. Tweeters are typically put facing in the same direction, and as close as reasonably possible to the woofers to compensate. - the "shrill" highs are a result of not using a crossover. Essentially, this divides up which frequencies are being played by each driver. If they are both doing the same frequencies ( no crossover) you end up with muddy lows and highs as a result. - The passive radiators on the lg ( and most bluetooth speakers) result in tighter bass, but limits how low the bass can go. This is generally a smart move for small speakers, but you could have cool results going the port route. I think with some work and using something like a used center channel speaker, you could destroy a bluetooth speaker for a lot less. At any rate, awesome work. If you cleaned up the holes id buy a speaker with that design!

TBH I wanna see them refine this design until it becomes cheaper to manufacture each one, as well as beats the off-the-shelf speaker!
@dtibor5903
@dtibor5903 2 жыл бұрын
Also the LG has DSP, the DIY does not. Passive radiators need a lot of EQ and power limiting, otherwise the main driver will get damaged easily, or it just sounds really bad.
@Randy-nb6fw

The toe out is cringe and the wood speaker grills are also cringe. Basically an anti wave guide. The plastic flaps that cover half of the driver ;( Even without a crossover this would probably sound better outside the box they made 😂
@Eng586
@Eng586 Жыл бұрын
Also I felt like the tweeter was kinda useless, the DMA series already has good treble, he shoulda used passive radiators instead. Idk if he looked at the frequency response graph but whatever. It would have been significantly smaller too
@techno1561
@techno1561 3 ай бұрын
@@AR15ORIGINAL I don't think that it would. Off-the-shelf speakers have the benefits of economies of scale, whereas a DIY/bespoke project like this is going to cost more for worse. LMG would have to go full speaker company to even come close to something off the shelf.

Well most of that cost was labor. The reason why speakers we buy are so cheap for better quality is they automated it, already had it designed and mass produced instead of having to have all the labor cost made back on 1 unit. Thus why niche products cost thousands if not in the 10 thousands when they should only cost hundreds if the company thought it would sell more units of it.

@@hydrolifetech7911 It's funny that he thinks that by adding the fact that he is an engineer, it will somehow add credibility to the comment. Most engineers, especially new ones, love to point out the fact they are engineers and are of the opinion that being an engineer is a profession that people look up to. Which is pretty much the opposite of reality. No one cares. I can diy shit better than most of my friends that are 'engineers'. I didn't need to go to school for four years to figure out how to fix shit. And half the time when I do fix something, I need to reconjigger it to work after some 'engineer' designed it until it was so complex it was destined to break. Why is the comment funny? Because engineers think they're special. There are of course good engineers. But none of them start a KZfaq comment with, "As an engineer". You asked. I elaborated.

2:00 costs such as labour costs and anything really associated with designing and manufacturing shouldn't be factored in. They have economies of scale, and usually products aren't developed from scratch entirely, especially with more refined companies, such as apple, saumsung, lg, etc. Also labour costs aren't easily as 'hourly' since the specialist in charge of that aspect of the product likely has other products they're working on, and if they understand crossover parts, notably seen with all automakers, then they aren't spending as much time as you'd think. I'm sure we all have friends in the engineering and manufacturing sector, you can ask around and they'll validate that.

But if you DIY something and want to know how much it costs in total, you really should value your own time too. Otherwise it would be hard for you to decide if DIY is cheaper for you than use that time to earn money and then buy the product. Like for an example if I would start doing that and let's say it would take me 5 hours to make it from start to finish that would be 90€ on top of material costs.
@gytux0258
@gytux0258 3 жыл бұрын
That part of the cost was more to show how worthwhile it is to go the DIY route if you want to save money.
@SummerSausage1
@SummerSausage1 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ziegeri Eh. I'm on the fence with this. I'm a strong advocate for DIY for things - I have my 800TB Roswell racks filled with HDDs from shucking external drives. I easily saved money from those overpriced 45Drive 'Storinators.' However, not every DIY project is about cost savings. I think Linus mentioned it himself in this, sometimes it's about the experience. If you were to say your time costs money, than you'd have to factor in everything you waste your time on. I would only say it's legitimate to factor in your time as a cost when you're planning on selling this aka this is a business venture. Also this would ba very hard thing to calculate - what is your time really worth? I can charge over $100 an hour for my tech services and that would be a reasonable charge, but if I (keyword is 'I') charged that for graphic design, no one would pay me because I don't have that skillset. Also, if you go down the route of calculating costs than you need to also factor in alternative costs and things that can bring costs down. You can outsource your CAD work to India, you could outsource your manufacturing of a chasis to China, etc. When factoring in your time, it's imperative to also factor in everything else. BUT, at the end of the day, I still say that a DIY project such as this is 'timeless' - whether it takes me 1 hour or 10 hours, I'd still attempt it, even if the product is subpar (as was the case for the video). Labour costs are also significantly more complicated than I even discussed.
@Ziegeri
@Ziegeri 3 жыл бұрын
@@SummerSausage1 Yeah I do get your point and I personally like doing DIY stuff. But in this case the "question" was if you could do it cheaper than what a off the shelf product would cost. And in my opinion if you are solely going for best for as little money as possible, you should calculate the cost of your time. Since in most cases at least in here, your employer will allow you to work overtime and even pay you more than what your agreed hourly salary is, like I think the min is 50% more by the law. Ofc that depends entirely where you live and what kind of laws etc. that country has. So IF I were to pursue the most cost effective product, I would consider if it would come cheaper by just taking few extra hours at work. If you love to DIY, it is most likely a hobby where the cost is in a minor role, and just the building and designing is the important part, then I would not worry about what my time is worth.

But that's the point - LG can do that, while we can't. Our time has value, so we have to factor that in when we're considering DIY as an alternative. The only way DIY comes out on top here is by assigning a high value to what you learn in the process of making it, which would be an absolutely fair thing to do, but whether that matters and how much it's worth will vary from person to person.
@ff-qf1th

@mattmers
@mattmers 3 жыл бұрын
@@SirVer51 Our time does have value but doing something on someones own time is our competitive advantage. It is wrong to value all time spent equal to a set value. I work x hours a week, I get paid for x hours, anything I do outside that time is not equal in value. No one can work 24/7 so time spent doing things does not have equal value. This would contradict the value of making your own dinner, working on your own car or even building your own computer. Have you seen LTT include labor hours for every pc build guide ($1000 build) on the channel? No because the expectation is that you building it yourself on your own time does not contribute to cost. If you work for a company, you will opt for prebuilds because company time has a higher associated value. It would only make sense to include the man hours if the speaker build was for a company.
@SirVer51
@SirVer51 3 жыл бұрын
@@mattmers I disagree - your time has value even if you're not working. In fact, depending on your priorities, your off time has greater value than your work time, since it's of greater personal value to you. They just picked the minimum wage because they needed some sort of baseline - you could take it as quarter of that and it still wouldn't even be close in terms of cost. The PC build comparison doesn't really hold up IMO because of how much simpler it is - even for a relatively tech savvy crowd like this one, designing your own speaker from scratch will take far longer than building a PC, even if they haven't done it before. This is especially true when you don't have LMG's resources, with the workshop and 3D printers and such. Now, like I said, if you view it as a personal leisure thing, then yeah, you don't have to consider your own time as part of it, but that only makes sense if doing this is something you would enjoy as much as having the speaker right from the start, which would be uncommon. And that's just to get to $130 vs $180 - the difference in sound quality, features and ease of use would easily make up that gap. You would have to either value the DIY experience enough for it to actually bring down the cost rather than just not affect it, or not care about any of those advantages. P.S. Working on your own car also rarely makes sense from a time and money perspective, at least where I live, unless of course the above-mentioned caveats apply.
