This! Respect to Anton but his signing leaned a little PSE. ASL is very illustrative, and I think it would’ve been so cool to see how much more information a native Deaf signer could give them just by virtue of being more expansive and vivid in their signing.

Very cool episode! Alas... ASL wasn't made in America. We actually went over to the U.K. to ask them if we could learn their sign language, but they wanted monetary compensation. A French representative was there and offered to teach us for free, thus American Sign Language is actually French in origin. 😁

In all fairness, FSL merged with indigenous sign languages and home signs in America to become the ASL of back then, and then it has drastically changed over the centuries to become uniquely ASL. ASL as we know it today IS distinctly *American.* Also slight correction, but sign languages did already exist in the US at the time. Gallaudet went to Europe to learn about how to educate deaf children. Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc mainly helped establish schools for the deaf in the US, which then “standardized” sign language more and naturally gave it heavy French influence bc of Clerc.

@@Cynthiaaagghh I appreciate the clarity!! My son is deaf, and his teacher explained it to me in very rough terms! I'm Hard of Hearing and an American Sign Language interpreting student in my senior year. It was interesting to see some of the variations and dialectical differences. There were some errors in signs like "the two of you" should be palm up, but nice to see a bit of representation. I'd love to see a Deaf person on the show next do story telling
@alyxv5163

I also noticed some issues with sign choice / production. I wished they had brought in a Deaf ASL user to give the instructions. But, it was cool to see ASL represented!

Does the Philipines have their own native sign language? I'm curious how much of the "errors" people are reporting are a result of Anton's family--probably via his brother--assimilating their local sign language after being taught ASL by a Peace Corp person.
@ladymink8
@ladymink8 Жыл бұрын
@@morgensellier7816 there is, it's called Filipino Sign Language (FSL). However, the issues folks have been commenting on are mostly errors in how he produces the ASL signs. It did not look like he was using completely new signs that would have been from FSL.

Getting a sibling of a deaf kid is great, but do this again with a native d/Deaf signer! There are so many great ones on IG and KZfaq and Twitter. Most of your language speakers spoke their language at home or was their first language/culture. Let's see the same with ASL please. 🤟

@@k49821 technically yes. Which is why I added in first language/culture because a hearing family member doesn't have the same connection to the culture/language as a d/Deaf signer
