For the mileage, it is said that if the first 2 numbers are offset of each other, that the odometer has turned over, so it is likely that it has 116,000 miles...These cars were the flagship of Chrysler...Chrysler got a the best amenities since it was the luxury class of Mopar. That being said, they got heavier metal, and Higher quality paint than the muscle cars of the time. This is why they still seem to stand the test of time, and survive so well. I personally am a "C" body fan, and have owned a few...I love them most for the condition you can still find them in. Amazing cars. I have owned a 1977 Chrysler Newport, a 1974 Chrysler Imperial, and a 1972 Plymouth fury for my "C" body platforms...The 72 Fury III being my favorite. The Imperials received the low powered 440 since it's purpose was mainly a cruiser, however the 69-71 Chrysler 300 got a High Performance 440 with the better 906 heads pushing it to 375HP...

They are really awesome cars! This is my second imperial I have collected over time. I have a 61 also! My grandparents bought a 73 Plymouth fury brand new but unfortunately it’s to far gone to save. What a car that was. The 70’s was definitely a cool time!

When you do your teardown, i think you may find the #4 rod bearing is the issue. At the 26-minute mark it appears that rod cap is darker than the rest at least from the video angle. That could indicate a lot of heat isolated there from a tight/spun bearing. Either way, a rebuild is needed. Gotta love those big Chryslers, they were rolling couches and you could seat six and still have plenty of power on tap when needed. Good luck with that Imperial.

It’s critical that those a/c compressors have sufficient oil in them or they’ll sling a connecting rod right out the side of them. Just keep that in mind before you try to get the a/c cooling. Beautiful car.

I had a 72 NewYorker Brougham with a 440. It was something else. The horn "button" was actually a pressure tape that ran the circumference of the steering wheel. It dry rotted after a few years and I replaced it with an actual button. The electric windows also became troublesome. It would eat the 120 speedo with no trouble, but the transmission gave out, as most Chrysler products were prone to do, and I parked it. Vandals tapdanced on the hood and windshield and I wound up selling it for a song when it was only 14 years old. I hope it was restored and still being used as the #LandYacht it was. After sitting as long as that Imperial likely was, I would pull the engine first thing. When you first opened the hood, it reminded me of how many belts that engine had😯. I remember having to replace all of them at one time when a mud clog on a back road broke them all(Likely just one or two, whose remnants got the others). Good luck restoring that Imperial.

Now, almost 30 years later,... people are starting to understand them and appreciate them!! They are getting much harder to find these days and starting to appreciate a little in value. They are great cars, and for their size, handle quite well with the torsion bars!! I can't wait to see your 61 and more videos!!!

The fluids always want to tell a story, get to know what different looking g fluids are telling you. Very good to it out first if it's bad. I would refill with tyranny fluid a marvel mystery to break loose a get things moving slowly after coating valves and springs and let soak with cri oil or liquid wrench spray foam. They love that type of bath and more often than not will perform perfectly. Lots of old toothbrushs and rags to scrub off sitting guck. Reapply liquid wrench foam. Imperial were very special and deserve restoration.

Guess you might've found out why it was parked in the first place. Cars in that kind of condition don't usually get parked if they're running perfectly. Seems more like a "116k miles" engine problem than a "16k miles" engine problem, presuming it's a bearing issue. I guess it's possible the owner ran it out of oil and ignored the low oil pressure light, but I suspect 10 years and 100k miles of a less-than-optimal maintenance philosophy are more likely. The sticking valves and oil varnishing on the cam seem to point that direction too. Fingers crossed the damage isn't too extensive. Awesome that you had a spare 440 to get this glorious boat back on the road while you rebuild the original engine! I'm not a big Mopar guy myself, but I am a fan of old land yachts (and an owner of a 77 Continental), and I will happily proclaim they absolutely knocked it out of the park with the fourth gen Imperial. Out of all the other versions they produced, this is unquestionably my favorite... it just has an unparalleled imposing presence about it. Certainly hope to pick one up someday.

Original engine rebuild is yet to come! And I’m just amazed on how well the body is and it’s in great shape for sitting that long. When it goes for it’s first drive there will be a video for that, and a tons more content coming soon as I have more cars that need work! Thanks for your awesome comment I hope you have a great day!

Those imperials have real leather interior too it's not the fake stuff. I bet that car was still a good car when parked but they just wanted a new car and parked it. My grandfather was a Chrysler guy he worked at Chrysler and drove nothing but Chrysler and he loved his New Yorkers and his Newports he use to drive the Imperials when they still made them but that's what made me a big Mopar guy riding in all them Mopars as a kid not to mention my uncle and dad were Mopar guys too but they drive the muscle car Mopars so it sort of ran in the family

You need compression to have the engine run and when you have valves open your losing compression out of them cylinders it's too bad someone forced the engine over and bent the push rods I'm sure while doing that is collapsed the spring in the lifters too from the lifter being bottomed out with no oil in them. The proper way to fix it right is to pull the heads. If it's a low mile car that is the reason why you are having those issues because everything has tight tolerance then a worn engine that is loose. Did the engine have the breather and air filter on it when it sat all them years or did the carb sit wide open
@rustyrevivals1623
@rustyrevivals1623 Жыл бұрын
We pulled the heads, and it dropped two valves but it dropped the one in cylinder one, I’m guessing the piston came up and hit it since it was stuck, it’s definitely a good thing this motor didn’t run. Also, the air cleaner was on it and everything when it sat so thankfully for that or there would of been other problems I’m sure! We are going to replace new valves and everything when we rebuild the original motor. Glad it wasn’t hurt bad

As good as the 440/3sp auto is, I'd love to see somebody swap in a genuine 426 hemi into an old luxo-barge like this classic Imp. Mated to a modern 4sp w/lock-up torque converter to provide some semblance of fuel efficiency and economy. If you're REALLY ambitious, maybe you can adapt some kind of independent front axle and give it AWD.
