Can We Joke About God?

If we can’t use the Lord’s name in vain, can we joke about God? Fr. Mike makes the case that there is room for humor about God in the context of love.
No one in the universe or beyond it deserves more honor, respect, and reverence than God, and we jeopardize our souls if we fail to see this. At the same time, though, Jesus called us his friends (John 15:15). Friends can joke about each other because they know there is mutual love and respect there.
It goes even deeper than that though, Fr. Mike argues. God is calling us to a whole different kind of relationship, a whole different kind of intimacy, through his son Jesus. If we enter into that relationship and nurture it, we may discover that God does indeed have a sense of humor, a whole new sense of humor we didn’t even think was possible.
Catechism paragraph on the Second Commandment:
“Blasphemy is directly opposed to the second commandment. It consists in uttering against God - inwardly or outwardly - words of hatred, reproach, or defiance; in speaking ill of God; in failing in respect toward him in one's speech; in misusing God's name. St. James condemns those "who blaspheme that honorable name [of Jesus] by which you are called" (James 2:7). The prohibition of blasphemy extends to language against Christ's Church, the saints, and sacred things. It is also blasphemous to make use of God's name to cover up criminal practices, to reduce peoples to servitude, to torture persons or put them to death. The misuse of God's name to commit a crime can provoke others to repudiate religion” (CCC 2148)

@Hey I think there is something to this. Some see humor, like intentional humor, in the gospels. For instance, Jesus walking across the water, so who gets out of the boat and tries walking to him? The apostle named rock, of course. And... that gently pokes fun, respectfully, at St. Peter while avoiding even friendly irreverence toward Jesus.

Once, in a fit of sadness after being rejected by a girl, I was in tears literally asking God, "God, just give me someome to love!" I had my music playing on shuffle in the background, the very next song that started playing was "Dont pray for love" I was laughing through tears😂😂 I believe I got to briefly experience God's humor

One afternoon my electricity went off in my house. I sort of panicked because I never had it go off since I moved there. I was thinking, "I hope it goes back on before it gets dark." So, Later on I thought," OK, I think I'll read the Bible for awhile while it's still light out. So, I asked God which book in the Bible He wanted me to read. He said start in Genesis. Which I thought was sort of odd. But, I started to read it Then I got the joke, when I got to Genesis 1:3 And God said, "Let there be light."

I recently bought a beautiful drawing of Jesus. It is pretty large. I was trying to put it into a frame which I had used for another project. The drawing is of Jesus smiling broadly. I love it. Anyway I was struggling to hammer the nails in the frame straight. Some were okay but the last one was really giving me a problem. I said to God "I really want to put this picture of you in my room! Help me out here! YOU were a carpenter!" I smiled as I said it with much love, affection and joy. Next thing, the nail went in perfectly. The drawing is next to my bed.

My favorite story in this regard concerns Saint Teresa of Avila. As St. Teresa made her way to her convent during a fierce rainstorm, she slipped down an embankment and fell squarely into the mud. The irrepressible nun looked up to heaven and remarked to God, "If this is how You treat Your friends, no wonder why You have so few of them!"

Went to Mass today and Fr. told a joke in his homily. Jesus was walking through the streets of Heaven and He noticed people in the streets who were not supposed to be there. He went to see St. Peter at the gate. "Peter you are slacking off, letting the wrong people into Heaven." "It's not me Lord. I sent them away like you told me to, but then they go around the back way and Your Mother lets them in." (He told it to illustrate Our Lady's desire for our salvation.)

I KNOW God has a sense of humor because He'll often joke with me when I'm talking to Him. Usually I'll be in my car, just telling God my problems, and He'll often respond to me in the form of a Christian radio host talking about a certain subject, sending me a sign that relates to something I'm dealing with, or sometimes I'll just hear His still, quiet voice in the back of my mind, giving me direct counsel- sometimes He'll even completely roast me or crack a joke at my expense. One of these times I was talking to God about my own downfalls and frustrations- I don't remember the exact details- and immediately a meme popped into the back of my mind- the one of Michael Jordan saying, "Stop it. Get some help." It felt very much like God sent that vision to me and it made me laugh out loud, because in context to the conversation I was having with Him, it worked well and I didn't see it coming. I'm sure I sound crazy to some but to this day I swear God sent me that meme. x'D

I often wake up during the night and will pray the Divine Mercy for those in most need and dying. Yesterday, our daughter sent us a text of an adorable kitten in need of a home one 2 cats recently died). I was excited and told her that if the family was able wait till we returned from vacation in a week, we would immediately connect with them. So, I began to fall back asleep and caught myself saying, “ for the sake of Your Sorrowful kitten, have mercy on us and the whole world.” I was now more awake and began to chuckle, quickly thinking, God has a great sense of humor and HE SURE KNOWS what was in the back of my mind!

Father, on the other side of this, I often wondered and mostly believe, that God has a sense of humor. As an example, whenever I'm having one of those crazy days when nothing can seem to go right, I look up and say or think: "Okay, God you can stop laughing." And then I begin to laugh at myself. I think the best God/saints/catholic/jesus jokes are ones that have a basis in the true nature of God. The joke about the boats and helicopter in the flood for example define God's work in the world. Also, jokes about Jesuits are fair game.

I always thought of that as more of an anecdote rather than a true joke. One of my favorites A very religious man was once caught in rising floodwaters. He climbed onto the roof of his house and trusted God to rescue him. A neighbour came by in a canoe and said, “The waters will soon be above your house. Hop in and we’ll paddle to safety.” “No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me” A short time later the police came by in a boat. “The waters will soon be above your house. Hop in and we’ll take you to safety.” “No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me” A little time later a rescue services helicopter hovered overhead, let down a rope ladder and said. “The waters will soon be above your house. Climb the ladder and we’ll fly you to safety.” “No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me” All this time the floodwaters continued to rise, until soon they reached above the roof and the religious man drowned. When he arrived at heaven he demanded an audience with God. Ushered into God’s throne room he said, “Lord, why am I here in heaven? I prayed for you to save me, I trusted you to save me from that flood.” “Yes you did my child” replied the Lord. “And I sent you a canoe, a boat and a helicopter. But you never got in.”

@@jarrodchee That's amazing. The Czech Republic 🇨🇿 on the other hand is by some researchers called the most atheist country in the world. The Churches are far from full (although there is a lot of them) and mass attendants are mostly older people.

I stopped watching Family Guy for the said reason; Seth McFarlane and company make egregious jokes about Christ without remorse. Screenjunkies and Wisecrack on KZfaq are also pushing their humor to a blasphemous line.

I found a book by a stoic, Marcus Aurelius. When Jesus died on the cross and then lamented “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” he mirrored some of that stoicism though was certainly not imperfect and, wishing not to be besmirched with their murder, he thus lamented. God must have been that stoic ten times over. It is a big leap to think that God would hold that sin against Jesus and Jesus knew it. Thank you for your teaching. I appreciate you.

A good message Fr Mike , shaking things up a bit , sometimes we as believers can look like we’ve been baptised in lemon juice , and one wonders were the fruits of the spirit have gone . Joy and laughter manifested by our carnal mind , by way of our flesh are always created at a cost to others , including those around us receiving it , our flesh tends to TAKE to receive joy . The Spirit of life SUPPLIES us with all joy through the love of Christ Jesus flowing out of us , and the laughter and happiness manifested becomes your shining light giving others the love you’ve received , to God be the glory. Galatians 5:22-23 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Know your Identity in Christ Jesus and keep your eyes on him , and you won’t sink Mathew 14 v 22 to 33.

I like this topic alot and was always wondering about it so, thank you so much for it! As someone in their mid-20's and in a world where most of my generation grew up with shows like Family Guy or TV humour that wrote really disrespectful jokes about God and Jesus I never really laughed at it and felt odd why others were. It made me doubt myself because I didn't want to be someone who ruins the party at all, but these jokes were always spoken with a layer of insult and disrespect, moreover people nowadays throw insults and mean words and get away with it by saying its a joke so many times. If its someone I am close to and we've already established a relationship then I would get it, but too often I see strangers just telling mean jokes as if I can tell whether they are joking or not on our first meet. So, thank you for this! Boundaries are always important as well as the context of the joke too. I donno if God jokes back at me but I'm pretty sure He does, there will be moments I will do things that are difficult in life and think about how God would advise me, and I feel like sometimes I keep making the same mistake and in my head all I pictured was God shaking His head and sighing, telling me how many times He had told me He loves me and will never leave me in a loving Father way that's just feeling like, 'My child, believe me. Have I ever lied? Why are you making it difficult for yourself?' It makes me laugh cause I can relate to that feeling before with people in my life xD It's weird but it pumps me up when I sort of got reminded by Him about His character and nature that is so obvious that I felt like 'How could I forgot about this?!'

Throughout my life, occasionally when I’m in deep doubt, God will speak to me in the most ironic humor. As in, once in adoration, consulting a friend about spiritual restlessness, the *exact* line from “Your Grace is Enough” (another friend had Christian contemporary playing on her phone) played as follows: “You bring rest to the sinner’s restless heart…” (paraphrased, it’s been awhile since I’ve heard the song) Or, at least, that’s the example that comes to mind when I think of God’s sense of humor. Coincidence? Maybe. God working hands-on? Most likely.

Fr. Mike, it was a great pleasure to have seen you in our magazine. Your messages always keep me focused, so seeing your picture on the magazine actually made me read it with more enthusiasm. Not that I don't but this time it was a more connected. Thank you for your way of expressing love to God and thank you for your time in helping us thru questions we have. By the way the magazine's name is North Texas Catholic.
