Can We Make This 1978 E7 Locomotive Run Again? - Seized & Burning Motor

I picked up this 1978 TYCO E7 locomotive off eBay over a year ago. The drive appeared at the time to be in poor condition with tons of grease and saw dust over the gears. Until now I didn't understand the full extent of the condition of this loco - The whole drive was completely seized which may have also damaged the windings on the motor, causing it to start burning. This is certainly one of the more challenging repairs I've seen.

that motor is strikingly reminscent of the aurora pancake motors used in the h/o slot cars.used to rewind them for more speed.brushes were the same though notched for the pick up on the bottom.as this came from tyco i betcha thats what they used.tyco also had h/o slot cars,gheez i just gave my age away.saw that motor and wham out came those days.

Thanks, there were a few attempts I didn't show too. I initially attempted to rewind the motor however there were a few problems with this since I didn't have the right gauge of wire so in order to pull the same torque I put 350 turns which made the coils too large to fit inside the casing...

BTW, NYNH&H was `a devoted Alco customer `(`with a few FM's` and a group of Lima 1200 hp switchers working Maybrook yard) - not buying its first EMD until 1956.

It actually isn't too far off from a few ex-CB&Q E-7s and E-8s the BN inherited. I've seen photos where the cab and nose are in cascade green, the rest of the body is stainless steel. Ever since I saw prototype pics that Tyco was not too far off, I've been trying to find a couple. Go figure, it's just like the blue stripe Amtrak coach (Which also had a one-off prototype!) when I am not interested in buying them, they're everywhere. Soon as I want 'em, no one is selling.

I always thought Tyco went too far with some of the "artistic license" they took when marketing their products in the 1970s. It did save them money to use the trucks and power unit from the C-630, but the average modeler was not impressed. Model railroaders, however, were not their market. They sold toys! Having worked for a toy store in the mid 1970s, we sold thousands of Tyco starter sets, and additionally had many after sale purchases of their accessories and cars. Neither Bachmann or Life-Like were as big in North America back then. These were also the years of the Lionel HO line that Bachmann later incorporated parts of. Their big? competitor then was AHM, at least in our stores. From a repair standpoint, Tyco was fairly easy due the commonality of parts. But our store had a 90 day guarantee, and many "aftermarket" Tyco locomotives were acquired by customers "for free." Tyco did not want their "failed equipment" back, and most issues were due to over-oiling, pet hair, and running on the carpet. Usually, the store would just dump them, but I did repair a few, and with proper cleaning they ran like new. We would put them in the used cabinet at half the price of a new loco. Essentially, people got a new loco, for half price, sans box. Should you have the opportunity, pick up a Model Power E-7 from that era, which I found to be a much better loco.

I think I eventually will. My suggestion for the time being would probably be to buy the cheapest Bachmann train set on the market. ($100 or less) They aren't the best but they are the cheapest. If you have the budget you might want to consider a Walthers Proto train set. I would avoid the larger Bachmann train sets, they are much more expensive than their cheap ones but not higher quality.
@SMTMainline
