That artifacting can be caused by dry solder joints as well, especially if the cards overheated. If you cant find anything wrong with the SMD's its worth baking it to reflow the solder just in case thats the issue, also if it works could result in another video 😊

Had this same issue a while ago. The gpu needs reballing. In safe mode it operates on the minimum freq, voltage etc.. When installing drivers, it uses the proper settings up to specs, which crashes the card. Not the drivers or windows fault at all. Pure hardware issue unfortunately.

Ive had some gpus thst just degraded and some part of the voltage frequency curve (nvidia) or pstate (older amd) was unstable changing voltages in the bios did resolve the issue. Most of the time it was somewhere in the middle of the clock randge. Even had a intel cpu do this.

I've had a few AMD cards overheat with no fan spinning. Usually it's after driver installs. The first card I ever saw overheat and die was an AMD R9 280x. Once it overheated, the core was so hot it actually was damaged. You could see artifacting just like on the screen you had.

Im running a AMD R9 290 right now that had artifacting, green lines all over and slowing the computer down. Tried a few things before i just threw it into the oven. Have been working for a month without issues. Ran RDR2 meanwhile i was home with corona and the poor thing was 100% peaked all the time and still works. Now the question is how long it will last

I have a 280X and have been using it to speculative mine some coins as i have a better gpu for gaming. Whenever i start a miner it jumps to 99C, i never noticed if it did that before in games because i never really paid attention to it like i do now. But if i use the AMD software to change the voltage or the frequency settings in the tuning menu, it will fix itself and run at a good temp. Very strange behavior.

Thank you for being realistic in your repair process. Alot of unexperienced pc enthusiasts try the oven or a heat reflow on the gpu die, both of which are temporary fixes. The real fix for the main culprit is a reball which 99% of people won't do. A+

This behavior, specifically the artifacting in vertical bands (when drivers are loaded) is a sign of bad memory. GPU is probably fine and yes it prevents itself from overheating if fan is bad but memory doesn't.

At 3:07 mark, with the card port side on left of video, I can see part of the gold plating on the second from far right side end, the second one in from side nearest the L shaped side of long connector, has a bit of the gold missing from the connector. It's possible that could cause a bad connection in the slot on motherboard.

I picked up a 5770HD locally for $15 a couple of years back. I had a similar issue, very dusty, but the fan did spin. After cleaning and re-pasting, it would boot into windows but had some odd artifacts on occasion and slow downs. I figured the chip had deteriorated, so busted out the heat gun to "re-ball". That seemed to fix it - which more often than not is a temporary fix. I still have the card and use it in an old LGA775 build that sits in the garage for when I do car repairs/upgrades and want to refer to repair manuals, videos etc. without greasing up my phone.

I had the same issue with a Sapphire HD7950. I overheated the card after the fans failed. It reached 99 C, which shouldn't have been a big issue as I shut it down as soon as I realized it was overheating, but it did fry the 2nd v bios. I replaced the fans, and the card worked fine for a while, but started exhibiting the same artifacting yours did. I baked the card and it worked fine for 8 months, but eventually completely died.

Seen something similar to this years ago, with a buddy's GPU. I think it was a GTX 280 iirc, but it behaved almost identical to this. What happed with his was, when trying to clean the thing, he vacuumed over the fan and spun it up so fast, that the charge it generated, fried the card. The artifacting it produced was a little different than what this one showed, but it behaved, almost identical. The boot looping in particular, and this was back on Windows 8. Pretty sure he either fried the ram, or gpu itself. It's quite possible the damage to this card, was irreversible.

Hi Greg Have you ever thought of building a computer with part's from the 80's and 90's, you know those old school mother boards, graphics cards, processers and so on to see if they can still be used today 2022,running Windows 98, XP, vista and so on, just to see if they can cope with simple tasks of running 1080p games and other programs, just in case someone out there still has a pc running and just wants a couple of extra gigabytes of storage, ram, memory or speed. As I have a couple of Intel motherboards that could run Windows 98,but would struggle with XP, vista and so on. Would be fun to see if they are capable of doing basic tasks like running Internet searches and some basic game plays with the modern games. Just a thought to put out there in the computer tech world. Loving the video's and the information into the parts of the pc and so on.

The only thing that I could think that might yolo fix it would be to re-flash the original bios on it if there's a backup on techpowerup for that model. It's pretty common for cards to seem to work fine and then when drivers load things go down the drain. The artifacts lead me to think the flash wouldn't be successful though.

I just revived my old Radeon HD5770 to give to a friend who is struggling with 4th gen intel integrated graphics. The thermal paste had basically turned into powder but after a re-application and a deep clean of the fan/heatsink, its still going (relatively) strong at over a decade old now. My backup GPU is an HD7850 that could probably use the same treatment too, I hope I can keep it going for years to come.

Usually what happens is that the card first will work since there are no drivers installed. After drivers installation the card will try to operate at its “full potential”, and that’s when things will start to go south. Same happened to me with an old gtx980, awful day, such a good card that failed one day to the other.

Greg I fixed aold graphics card for my only desktop at the time my new build wasn't done yet and I still wanted to play games but it would artifact and freeze and crashed the games to desktop. I looked in the case and the fans were so clogged with dust that the blades couldn't spin. So one day I decided heck I will try cleaning it and see if that worked. It did, you got to peal off the seal on the back because dust can block the contact with the motor in the fan and also absorb the lubricant,, I opened it up there was nothing but dust rapped around the geal, so I cleaned that out. Relubracated it taped the seal back on and put the card back in with new thermal paste and the card fired up like new.

this reminds me of last year when I took my old 7970 apart. It was working just fine but running very hot when I decided to finally put it up for sale on something like offerup. so i got some new thermal paste and thermal pads, took the card apart, cleaned it up with new tim and pads, put it back together and was immediately getting very similar artifacting. I wound up taking it apart one more time to make sure I had put all the thermal pads in the right spots, put it back together and still same artifacting. Started going through driver troubleshooting and then the card just stopped working. I think I may have put to much pressure on one or more screws when putting it back together(i know better than to crank down on it, but maybe I still used to much force). Is it possible that at some point in the cards past it too was taken apart, repasted and then later on started showing artifacts due to incorrect pressure used when mounting the cooler? this might explain why paste didn't look that old for a card that is very old. when i took my old 7970 apart, the thermal paste flaked off, it was really bad.

Some other factors: 1. There may be a firmware update available. "GPU-Z" can identify the current video card firmware. 2. Check for UEFI compatibility using the free "GPU-Z" program. 3. Depending on the UEFI compatibility, may require setting the motherboard configuration set to "CSM Enabled". In which case, would also require complete Windows re-install with "CSM Enabled". 4. Check the status while the motherboard bios on-board graphics is set to "Enabled" instead of "Auto". Then plug in the graphics card, but the monitor still connected to the motherboard's HDMI port.

I had a r9 270 twinfrozr from msi that did the same thing. The fans would stop spinning I would have to spin them to get it to work, it gets worse until gpu temps get real bad, gpu artifacts, black screen with windows recovery and system shutdowns, I install the drivers with ddu and safe mode, driver crashes then shuts down computer. I eventually replaced it with a 1660 super from asus I hope it doesn't end up like the r9 270 did. I only got 5 years out of the r9 270. For me it was the opposite. I had artifacting on an older card. I was fixing a PC for my brother in law. I reinstalled Win10 and that actually fix the issue completely. No idea why but if I had to guess I would say the Win 10 that was installed was not updated and causing the issue so when I reinstalled it, it then had the correct drivers already for it.

I've seen this type of behaviour, vertical lines, with a couple of GPUs some 13 years ago. One XFX Nvidia card and one Sapphire AMD card. I have had many ATI/AMD cards over the years, and I have seen this more than once I had a 270 die a half year ago, same problem.i did some research on it. And my conclusion is, when the thermal paste gets too old and the heat starts to rise, that soldering joint starts to get loose, so the GPU needs to get refitted. Many have got it to work using the oven method (don't use the oven you use for food) others have used a blow dryer and also many got it to work using a heat gun. My family pc I believe had a Nvidia Riva TNT2 card in it. I remember trying to play a demo of Alien vs Predator 2 on it and it ran at like 10fps. Terrible times.

My older brother owns this card, really should remind him to clean it up and re-paste. Also, is it natural for a high-power GPU to heat up rapidly when fans are not spinning? Mine is MSI R7950 with Arctic Accelero Twin Turbo II cooler (250W rated). Fans do work, but i have to get an molex to 3-pin adapter since both 4-pin attached to the PCB and 3-pin connected to PSU are required for them to run. Idle sits at 40-50C, set to lowest speeds, and manages to reach 100C after few minutes while under load. Hopefully did not cause any damage as this happened 5 times, each the moment hit 100C i put it back to idle. No artifacts, no crashes. Processor, together with VRAM modules at this scenario were always at safe temps, around 50-60C. Left side panel has been removed for such reason, other than having to tidy up PSU cables that go outside the case, with single fan on the front. It got cleaned up, re-pasted with NT-H1, also has pads on memory modules.

Get yourself a cheap used Toaster oven, heat this thing up to 400 degrees for 10 min. Let it slowly cool....and see what happens "poor man's Reball". I have rescued Several cards doing just that even an HD7970!

I wish Greg would do an oven bake video on a card or at least a heat gun video on an artifacting card to see if that fixes it. I've fixed a few video cards using the oven method.

I had the same issue with a GT 8800 a looooong time ago after I did something stupid in Furmark. Long story short, I knew from the beginning of the video you were not going to have luck with this one. The GPU core is toast, nothing you can do. Great video as always, I really enjoy your channel!

nothing is wrong with the core but rather the soldier joints between the flip chip and the package. These can be temporarily repaired with a heat gun but will fail again.

I recently open my 3070 Ti FE, that i bought in July, it was completly new, but after only 7 months the thermal compound was TOTALLY dry. I had to use some instrument just to remove it from the GPU and the cooler.. what a shame for a new card.

Older cards may offer an initial spin up; they don't turn/engage unless under 3D load. So this may be normal for the card (that's definitely a cooked card - you should bake it - it won't last but may confirm it by reflow which is temporary at best)

I promised I'd come and watch the video after the McLaren car launch, so here I am. Could the culprit be the BIOS of the graphics card? I've seen similar behaviour with cards that have the wrong BIOS or a corrupted version. Keep up the great work, Greg. I'm looking forward to more PCDC and Fix or flop videos. Those are really good.

Kinda looks like a solder issue...I had this same thing happen with a gtx 1060 that belonged to a friend...I threw it in the oven at like 180 degrees or so and voila it worked again! Might be worth a try, it's not like you are gonna lose anything if it doesn't work...

I actually understand what is happening with that card because i had a simular expirience with a GTS 8800. Your card need a HOT minute in an oven.Also when you get into Windows the OS tried to initialise the card but because the card has a fault on it, it doesn't know what to do and restarts before you see it fully boot up and crushes to the screen you saw. Also that's the reason you can boot it up without drivers.

When I see color banding like that and I know the monitor/cable is good, it basically means the memory is toast on the video card. The fact that the fan isn't spinning on startup indicates to me the owner of this card was doing some intensive graphics with the card and the memory started to fry. If the GPU was fried, it wouldn't POST. You only get the color issues like that with segments of the memory being dead. So unless you resolder some new memory chips to that card, it will be forever like that. Your first attempt probably fried more memory in areas where the drivers were being loaded. Also cheap old cards didn't throttle or shutdown on overheat either. So basically it's dead Jim.

Good thing i'm keeping watch on my family's old PC with the H.I.S RX 560 still kicking after getting it for just $60 pre-pandemic , i'm not taking any chance's, throttled back power limit (-20%), that bought down temps from 61 C to 52 C with little performance loss.

I have an old HD 7870 that "died" on me 3 weeks ago with kinda the same issue. It's working fine until the driver loads.. after that I get nothing. I will try to fix it by putting it as a secondary card into a system that works and then try to reflash the BIOS because after 10 years there might be some issue with it. Maybe you could try the same with this card.
@Teksers
@Teksers 2 жыл бұрын
Greg, there is another posibility. It's called bitrot, the card is 10+ years old thermal paste was crusty and dusty. It could be that the BIOS chip got corrupted, I would boot directly from the APU and then try with ATI flash to re-flash the BIOS on it from TechPowerUp, where you can find the exact model.

watch der8auer, these kind of problems can be resolved by putting the card in the oven for x amount of time in y degrees. Think it has to do with the solder will get soft and when cooling down resolder and maybe fix the problem. I'm also pretty sure the artifacting is due to bad memory/connection to memory.
