My father was rescued from Dunkirk in operation dynamo. He was one of the last to the beach and absolutely exhausted, but because of these 'little boats' and the men who sailed them, he made it safely back to England. It is not just the boats that should be remembered, but the men who sailed them and the risks they took to save the troops. it was such a feat it should never be forgotten. I wish the team well and hope that they are successful with the restoration.

My father as a 20 year old Royal Engineer was in Belgium attached to General Montgomery's troops. He was behind the retreating troops blowing bridges and roads to delay the advancing enemy long enough for Dynamo to be a success. Fortunately, he managed to get to Brays dune just over the Belgium border and then on one of these little boats and back to blighty, cold, wet and hungry. As you say, lest We Forget ! 🌹🇬🇧

Dominic, you have done a wonderful job in documenting the first step in this dramatic rescue attempt of a former rescue boat! This was well done and is a credit to you in your expanding capabilities in film making and story telling! Since I didn't see any one else filming, I assume the restoration committee didn't hire a documentary team. I hope they realize that the efforts to complete this boat "resurrection" might require some more public support and they will need to let you continue with the job!

So many old abandoned rotting boats left by the wayside. They all have stories. They were once someone's pride and joy, their business, their family get away or in the case of this one a life saver that allowed so many soldiers to live on and in some cases continue their families. There are so many people alive today that wouldn't be if it weren't for these boats. I wish I could save them all so massive thanks to the people who are putting their time and money in to saving this one.

Seeing this video has made me very happy. As someone whose father and uncle took Little Ships to Dunkirk, I've been interested in the fate of Southern Queen for a number of years. I'm part of a group that approached the owner to try and purchase her, with a view to completing a rebuild and returning her to home waters in Folkestone (very convenient for returns to Dunkirk). With his agreement, we've removed the heavy Gardner engine and are keeping it safe, with the intention of rebuilding that too. It's true, Southern Queen is in poor shape but it's worth saying that, on the basis of my inexpert inspection, her oak frames are in pretty good shape. The hull planking was replaced some twenty-odd years ago with softwood and, having been stored ashore for most of that time, it has dried out and rotted. The frames may possibly be salvageable but, at the very least, will provide the restorers with templates, should they need replacing. First and foremost, what is needed is the funding to save her, as she saved many. We have some ring-fenced funds, raised by our association - The Remembrance Line Association - and we are intending to apply for Heritage Lottery funding in due course. I'm glad to see the Go Fund Me appeal and have just contributed to it. I really hope many more will do the same. Well done, Sailing Cadoha!

Those who like this sort of boat re-conditioning might also want to watch "Sailing Yaba", A large fishing vessel from Brazil. Every bit of the boat had to be replaced due to worm damage. Another WW2 boat being restored is "Ship Happens", an 80 foot coastal gun ship, being done in the UK, also. I'm not sure if the boat was used in the evacuation, but I suspect that it might have been. I wish you good luck with your project. It looks to be quite extensive since nothing is left and will need a total rebuild.

Dom, this is an astonishing video. This should be on TV as it is a story to capture the minds of so many especially those few veterans that are still around to tell the story of Dunkirk. As a nation we have lost far too much of our maritime heritage, unlike buildings that seem to get protection and listings historic boats don’t enjoy that luxury, generally, and it is left to dedicated individuals and groups to do the crazy thing and save these vessels. If you have watched any of the restoration of Tally Ho you will appreciate the task that lies ahead. Yes, many of the original boat will need to be replaced and many will say, why not build a replica? Well, as you alluded to in the video it isn’t about the boat per se, it’s about the memory and legacy that lies within the structure, no matter how little of the original is left. I rebuilt a 1937, 48’ wooden fishing boat back in the 80’s/90’s on a very small budget and when there was no internet or KZfaq to help. Everyone said I was crazy but the emotion when she was returned to the water was overwhelming. It would be great to see any photos of how she looked originally and I may well have some fittings and gear that may be of help to the project. I will definitely look in to the workshop when I am next in Southampton and I guess Carly will be working on her if she is still at Willet Marine. Best of luck. Andy UK
@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures Жыл бұрын
The good news, Andy seems to be that after a surveyor came down to take a closer look at her yesterday it would appear that roughly 70% of the oak frame looks salvageable and about 30% of the planking also looks good. I don't know about you but I'd say that still falls into the realms of a restored boat rather than a replica 🙏🏻
@AndyUK-Corrival

@@CadohaAdventures Absolutely, if you think about Tally Ho there is very little of the original timber as I understand it but that’s still a restoration/rebuild in my book. It’s more than just the physical part IMHO.

The fact you were able to help and film, shows how much you are into it and how keen you are about the filmiing. It takes good judgement to know when to help, ie, not be in the way, and when to film "which isnt only putting cameras up" i would say. i would watch this for sure! as a former art restorer i can say that it is always about saving the message, time, and zeitgeist of any given era. the object in itself its the messenger.

I was surprised there was no block under the forward hog of the bow during transport or was this done but not shown. Presumably you will have to at least brace the keel and replace many of the floors and the open nature of the vessel will make the beam shelf a vital part of the replacement. With the technical skill of your team I see no problem in achieving restoration in 2 years provided you have funds and man hours available and the former will control the latter. You do realise that part of the vessel will become Ceaser’s Axe to some degree! I think the project is worthwhile but the second part of the project will be just as important namely generating a trust to run and maintain her.

Its not so much about the boat but what she represents, we are a maritime nation and unfortunately so often our maritime history is left in obscurity to be lost, once its gone its lost forever, I wish these people every success.

Many thanks Dominic, thoroughly enjoyed that and have to say with a tear forming in my eye. Thank goodness there are still folk out there that are passionate when it comes to preserving our history, whether it be on land or at sea. Good luck to the team with this ambitious project and I hope they get the public support they deserve, no doubt helped considerably with this excellent video from your good self.

brilliantly documented Dom, you’re a natural at this documentary lark and easily compare to the best we see on mainstream TV. The project is awesome and thanks for alerting me/us to the reunion. I dare say there will be many other boats out there being restored in time for that epic adventure back to France.

On the early nineties I was in a boat yard in Poole where there was apparently one of the Dunkirk little ships . Unfortunately the planking at the now had sprung away from the bow . No one seemed to be concerned about it so it is possible that it rotted away , big shame!
