Can we turn crayola markers into copic markers? I am working from the Marker Maker Kit and trying different methods to make these into blendable expensive markers. Can Crayola Copics win vs copic Markers? This is a cheap alternative for alcohol markers that are longterm refillable, environmentally friendly, cheaper, and customizable.

As an avid copic user, honestly, the results are not bad at all! It's a nice alternative for those who really wish to try out alcohol markers, but don't have the money (or access to a job).

@C C as someone who is disabled and living in a country with "free" healthcare, I couldn't agree with you more! I can't work because of my disability, but I used to be able to, and my money went toward rent and the like. Unfortunately my disability made it difficult to finish any schooling (working myself too hard often causes my body to shut down) so I was forced to work entry level retail jobs, so I was stuck in poverty regardless of paying for medical, AND my country still doesn't necessary pay for meds either, I'm just lucky enough to be so. Chronically I'll that our province's disability program accepted me, and I'm able to get a majority of my meds free. Hence my quotation marks over the word previously. I also have jaw problems that aren't covered by our province's healthcare because jaws are too close to teeth, but not close enough to be covered by dental. So it's a tiny little section of medical that everyone has to pay for, and it's unnecessarily expensive because of its unregulated situation. Anyway, my point is, I agree, some places can pay for meds, but that doesn't stop people from being able to afford art supplies, as well, THEY'RE FREAKING COPICS! Lol. It's probably the most expensive cost per use, art supply there is. Unless you count Caran D'ache.

when I was in art school I used to buy those cheap brush-tip coloring pens and would open the back and use a syringe to put alcohol in it. It worked pretty well and some cheap sets actually have decent colors. You can even do it with dollar store pens. Best trick I ever learnt for cheap coloring pens

ok so Id usually put 1/3 of a small syringe into the pen and wait for the next day to use them (and keep them in a pot tip down while you wait for the alcohol to be evenly absorbed). if its a thicker felt inside (like crayola and such) I'd use half a syringe. If you put too little alcohol, the ink will not blend properly. if you put too much the ink will seep through the paper and bleed over the lines when coloring so I recommend doing a test pen to know what quantity you need (start small and add up to it, then you know how much you need in total for the best result) make sure your pens close properly also because alcohol is more volatile than water so the ink will dry faster if left uncovered.

I think you can get shimmery marker ink by mixing in a little mica powder. If someone gets to try this before me, let me know how it works. I have hypothesized for quite a while, after obtaining a kit from pearlex for making metallic effect calligraphy ink that I could use the same procedures to get alcohol ink by swapping the water for alcohol. Have not tried it yet, but I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Also word of advice, as someone who was working a lot with isopropyl alcohol for collecting DNA samples, keep the bottle open only for short times and do all in well ventilated room. Especially if you decide to make bunch of markers in a row. Usually you do not notice problems until you get a bit of a nausea, but the thing can irritate you nose, mouth and lungs while you are breathing it in. If it gets on the skin it will cause it to shrivel and it will take some tome for the place to get re hydrated. Here in Europe you can't even purchase it in the pharmacy. You can only get 80% alcohol.

I use TouchLiit. It was like £30 for 80 markers and has simple chisel and nib tips but were a good copic alternative I found (smooth blending and quite a few colours match up when comparing charts) and I got them off amazon

You reveal your age by saying the rubbing alcohol "smells like the doctor's office". I remember as a kid this was true, but it's been many years since I've been in a doctor's office that smelled like that. They don't use alcohol in doctor's offices anymore to sterilize, because there are now superbugs that laugh off the alcohol as if it was nothing. The newer sterilization solutions don't have strong scents. Great video, Jackie. Good for you for thinking creatively and coming up with DIY Copic markers!

Christine's Creativity Cabinet I d k what doctor you go to ? because every office I have ever been to has a lab and one doctor I use to see everyone I went in it smelled like that the general evaluation room . they wipe stuff down in alcohol too all the time. I have a really sensitive smeller and smell it. nothing to do with age . depending on were you go some places sell stronger than others. this is Veronica to if you smoke it can dull your sense of smell too

Kioku they don’t have a brush but blend REALLY GOOD. However, you have to buy whole packs, and the colors are kind of random. I would still give them five stars.

If you wanna experiment with alcohol inks more, you can DIY some by deconstructing a sharpie and diluting the ink pad in some alcohol. Makes a lot more than the 10 dollar small bottle of inks! I've used this method and it's super handy. Made some colors you can buy in regular alcohol ink.

If you want lighter shades, just add more alcohol and less overall pigment. Also, a colourless blender is just pure alcohol. So you can make a marker without any pigment in it, and it slightly lightens the shades!

I actually really suggest trying out the TouchFive markers! They are a knock off brand where you can get 80 markers for something like $40 I think? And they are surprisingly amazing markers! And if you live in America, there is a knock off brand that does BRUSH TIP markers (a bit more expensive). As someone from UK we don’t have that here and shipping is painfully expensive but! If you need a cheap but genuine alternative, they are very juicy pens that have great colours while being at a fraction of the cost! I think that buying Ohuhu markers might be a better alternative. the crayolas: 26 dollars for 16 markers= 1.6 dollars per marker, while for 31.99 dollars you'll get 60 markers, they are cheap but very good as an introduction into the marker world. They don't ship to everywhere though. Doesn't mean I don't think it's a great idea to make your own, I have actually tried that too.

This is great, there was an fine arts teacher that was teaching in Ecuador who told his students to bring their charcoal to class the next day. While drawing he saw that they had these misshapen lumps. They had no access to an art/ craft store or internet (10 years ago at least.) Teacher was blown away, instead of coming with excuses they made their own drawing tool. Don't listen to anyone who says the expensive stuff is what you need to buy. Your mind and ability to make can overcome lack of finances. Plus who knows what fabulous fails might produce. Thank you!! This video is awesome.

Umn that's an interesting idea. It would have to be really liquid to go through the nib. But it might work. I'm not sure how well it would store inside the pen though. It would be nice to find out though.

I had never heard of copic markers a few days ago. Now I can’t escape them. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. They’re popping up in all my Feeds across the interwebs. I’ve never searched for them, I don’t know how this is happening!!! They’re even popping up on my Facebook!!! 😱😱

Brush nibs aren't needed for blending!!! People saying that are the ones that didn't used normal nibs before! Also, great video. I've done similar things before for some dying water-based markers and it also worked, but it's good to know there's other (and more custom) option.
