White belts teaching is actually good for them! Many will say it's just the blind leading the blind but the "teaching" component is actually essential in the consolidation of memory that enables a person to remember what they have learnt. In order to fully grasp a technique, formalising what you think you know and having to explain it to another person is just as good for you if not better than it is for the person you are teaching. Though this goes against the grain of standard BJJ dogma it will help your improve at BJJ.

I completely agree. I LEARN so much by talking through stuff with others. It solidifies stuff in my brain so much. This has been one of the great things about my gf getting into BJJ (without my asking) a little over a year after I started. In her first year I was able to occasionally impart what I knew about a position and basically every time I did that it became one of my most solid techniques. For example, she told me she was struggled to finish triangles and at this point I can basically recite Danaher's video on "how to do the perfect triangle choke even if you have short legs". I can notice my brain recalling going over it with her when I have a triangle locked in and need to underhook the leg to help get a little more angle to finish.

Agreed as a white belt. I've found that talking with my training partners we find nuances of the technique better.

If there were 20 black belts available after class to discuss technique with white belts for hours, then I would've been happy to only talk to black belts.

I’m a purple belt and I’m helping teach the kids and teens. It helps tremendously.

Surprising to hear agreement on this. Usually white belt teachers are highly frowned upon. When I, 23 month white belt who attends classes 5-6 days a week, show moves to other white belts I do have a better idea how to drill something than the 1-2x/week attendee. However, I preface it with, ‘the way senpai showed it…’ to reinforce I’m not the one with the answers but how I understand the way it was shown to me. When there’s 20-30 people on the mat and one instructor sometimes it can’t be helped but I do try to avoid it.

Different people bring different things to the table for sure. Someone with a wrestling and or military background or Law enforcement background who has actually had to lay hands on someone trying to hurt them absolutely has a different perspective than someone who has only just done jiu jitsu and competitions...... so if that person was a white belt.... they deff can teach a brand new white belt something.... and yes.... teaching is a great way to hone ones craft.

Started doing some limited teaching as an advanced purple and it leveled me up. The funny part is that I felt like I was taking from the folks I was teaching because I knew it was as good or better for me than it was for them.

The part where he talks about learning a new move and not having anything to do with that information is wrong. We try to use that move in an effective manner while rolling, in order to achieve a goal, typical to submit another person.

I think you missed the point..... if you've ever been to a several hour long seminar and learned a dozen new moves over the weekend.... no way you are picking all them up that weekend and using them in a live roll. It takes reps and practice to get new stuff down.

@@AverageGIJoeOutdoors Yes you are correct, and I agree with the idea that teaching cements what you learned, with that said, I believe the primary way to remember something is repitition in rolling/drilling etc, and teaching is an extra tool to help you remember it.

Without a doubt JT. Needs to be under supervision and guidance. More people need to understand how much better we get when we actually explain what we are trying to learn.
