I find it so ridiculous, that the black community is so offended by cultural appropriation when the bonnet was stolen from white women quite literally we are literally having our culture stolen from us and stomped on for trying to take it back!! and I don’t even care who wears it just know where it came from and don’t try stealing it from others, claiming it’s your own.

@Itslanii Not sure why this even matters. People should feel free to wear what they wish without criticism or judgment,no matter their race. I wear Indian 🇮🇳 attire all the time, and the only thing I get from Indian people are compliments for embracing their culture, not one side eye or ill remark. They seem quite positive and confident in their culture, and in other's embracing it, people could learn from their kindness.

This type of bonnet that USA BW are wearing is Europian style bonnet. It was made and wore first by white women since 19. century. It's even the French word. So no one should be offended. It's for everyone.

Same here and I started doing it and I see some benefits already. I have curly hair and was encouraged by my cousin's to start wearing it to protect my hair from breakage and I don't like silk pillowcases because they are so slippery! The bonnet what's the best alternative! Although it is very lose on my head but I just tie it in a ponytail in the back and make sure I don't touch my hair. Probably by the time my hair grows out some more because I had to cut it due to medical issues such as thyroid issues which was causing my hair to fall out in abnormal clumps and it was matting more than usual and I cut it basically shoulder length. I am now getting treated for my thyroid issues in my hair is now growing back and no longer falling in clumps!

I'll buy from whoever offers a good price for a good product regardless of race. Cultural appropriation is ridicilous, culture is meant to be shared and appreciated. I welcome you all to take part in norwegian culture, I'd be happy and filled with pride if you were interested because I'm proud of my culture and I want to share it so it lives on for generations to come.

I’m gonna say no on that one. Bonnets are culturally ubiquitous and both white and black folks have been wearing them for centuries. In the modern context, it is a loose hair covering, usually silk, with a tighter headband. Both black and white women used them heavily in the 50s and 60s when hair curlers were a staple in the modern woman’s hair care cabinet. In more historical contexts, bonnets are still a hair covering but have a stiff brim that acted as a sun shade and you primarily saw them worn by people, of all colors and classes, traveling through the day or by farm ladies who didn’t want the sun in their eyes and sweat rolling down their face. In very recent times bonnets have become associated with black women via tv shows and hair care marketing, but that doesn’t mean it’s a clothing item that is being culturally appropriated if warn by someone who’s not of the proper ethnic background.

Personally I think anyone can wear a bonnets, I’m white and sometimes I wear a silk bonnet to sleep (I have natural curly hair) it just keeps my hair in place and makes my curled look nice. If someone is wearing a bonnet to purposefully make fun of anyone of any race it’s not right, but I think anyone can wear whatever they want as long as it’s not harming others.

When you says white people shouldn’t wear the same things as black people, your essentially saying black people do your thing and white people do your thing and no crossover. It’s giving Jim Crow racism. Cultures have always been and will continued to be shared. Yes, black people will profit off of things that are traditionally white and white people will profit off of things that are traditionally black. Cultures were made to be shared. As long as the person wearing the bonnet is not doing it with the purpose of offending anyone, I see no issue with a white person wearing one.

I don’t see any cultural appropriations from a white girl wearing a bonnet, it’s simply for protecting your hair while you sleep. Whether you have straight, wavy, curly, or coily hair you can wear one!!! im neither a black nor white girl, I’m a Mexican girl who wants to protect her curls while she sleeps. Also bonnets were worn by European women ever since the 1400s, yes I know it’s 2024 now but I don’t think any black girl will think a white girl wearing a bonnet is offensive or rude. If anything a white girl should think it’s rude for a black girl to wear one since European women wore them first. This is just my opinion so please don’t come at me for it.🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

It comes from them cosplaying as black ppl. Stereotyping us and making content dressed as what they perceive as is black. No those bonnets are not the same. Before commenting you opinion do you attempt to read? Anyone can wear a bonnet. If you’re wearing one to mock black ppl however you are apart of anyone. I haven’t come at anyone yet your comment was passive aggressive. There are black ppl offended. Why? Bc offend times white ppl take and rename. Your opinion is simply one sided. Spew it after at least reading the comments first. Wear your bonnet for sleep. Not as a costume mocking black ppl. Anyway my opinion is that bonnets are for ppl with hair. Thanks for asking.

Let’s get in to some culture history ands facts! Bonnet has been used as the name for a wide variety of headgear for both sexes-more often female-from the Middle Ages to the present. As with "hat" and "cap", it is impossible to generalize as to the styles for which the word has been used, but there is for both sexes a tendency to use the word for styles in soft material and lacking a brim, or at least one all the way round, rather than just at the front.[1] Yet the term has also been used, for example, for steel helmets. This was from Scotland (in 1505), where the term has long been especially popular. Headgear tied under the chin with a string was especially likely to be called a bonnet.[3] Other features associated with bonnets as opposed to hats was that the forehead was not covered, and the back of the head often was. The outdoor headgear of female servants and workers was more likely to be called a bonnet. It was often worn outside over a thinner everyday head covering, which was worn at all times. In summary, hats were often stiffer, worn on the top of the head with the crown and brim roughly horizontal, while bonnets were pushed back, covering the back of the head, with any brim often approaching the vertical at the front. Other types of bonnet might otherwise be called "caps", for example the Scottish blue bonnet worn by working-class men and women, a kind of large floppy beret. Bonnet derives from the same word in French, where it originally indicated a type of material. From the 18th century bonnet forms of headgear, previously mostly worn by elite women in informal contexts at home (as well as more generally by working women), became adopted by high fashion, and until at least the late 19th century, bonnet was the dominant term used for female hats. In the 21st century, only a few specialized kinds of headgear are still called bonnets, most commonly those worn by babies and the feather bonnets of Scottish Highland regiments, as well as perhaps the war bonnets of North American Plains Indians. In addition, types of headgear called bonnets are worn by women as an outer Christian headcovering in some denominations such as the Amish, Mennonite and Brethren churches among the Anabaptist branch of Christianity, and with Conservative Quakers, mainly in the Americas. 😱😱😱😱

As a woman with curly hair and as a half white and half Hispanic, I just started wearing my hair in a bonnet when I go to sleep and I even saw my younger cousin wearing it on her head when I went to visit them to go bed and then recently I started wearing it and I started seeing some benefits! I've only been wearing it for a few days in the first night it came off and I had to tie it in a ponytail in the back and ever since then it hasn't been falling off! I also like seeing other women wearing braids and I always wanted box braids or jumbo braids but because of the time length it takes which for me because my hair is so thick and curly it would have probably taken 12 hours According to some ladies and so I did partial braids where are the front of my hair was braided but then the rest of my hair was natural and not to mention it didn't cause as much as the other braids! I didn't want to get the braids to offend people but because I thought they were the most beautiful thing ever! I think all hair is beautiful hair. Unfortunately, my mom who is Hispanic who I inherited her curly hair from always straightens her hair and always tries to pressure me into doing it because she thinks straight hair is more presentable. But I said Mom, you always tell me about women who would kill to have my hair so why are you telling me to straighten my hair? Before the last couple years I wouldn't care if I had my hair straightened but now, I prefer to keep it natural which is curly because I see my curly hair as part of my Hispanic roots and ironically I got thick hair from my dad and my grandma from his side of the family!
@MissOmiJo
@MissOmiJo 5 ай бұрын
I think your mom may do that bc straight is still a prevalent standard of beauty. I don’t think she’s doing it consciously bc she expresses love for you curls. Sometimes we adhere to standards we don’t know we believe. Depending on your hair box braids can be damaging. There can be damaging for all races. Particularly fine hair textures. Personally I’d try it at a black not African salon. Do what you like and live out loud. Our hair is a crown and a who says you can’t put jewels on your crown?
@Faithandseekerofchrist
@Faithandseekerofchrist 5 ай бұрын
@MissOmiJo yeah because they make it seem like straight hair is the fashion statement and my mom always straightened her hair so much that she even lost her curl pattern and now it's just wavy. Like I said, all hair is beautiful hair but I wish that she embraced her natural hair just like what I'm doing now! I know there's a lot of women and even people at my job tell me that they wish that they had hair like mine and that is why I almost always wear my hair natural except for rare occasions where I had to straighten my hair such as when I got injured and I couldn't take care of my hair myself and if it's up to me I don't think I even want to straight to my hair again! I mean I'm not prideful but I embrace my mom's Hispanic culture and as well as my dad's culture who is white and had Jewish parents. So I'm mixed and it was something I used to be ashamed of but now I'm not. Again all skin types and all hair types is beautiful hair! I like that everyone in this world is so different and that's what makes it so interesting!

Its down to my upper mid thigh and i just got my first pretty red silk bonnet and im worried aboit sleepovers with my friemds who are WOC and maybe offending them, should i avpid wearing it or is my reason okay? I just want to tie dowm the morning frizz man!

Although I think anyone can wear a bonnet. I do not know your friends. I don’t want to set you up to be treated like an outcast. I would ask one of your friends. You would be subjected to their comments if they are against it. You all sound like teens so you never know which way it will go at this age.

Buy it from who inspired you or taught you to wear one. 9/10 is was a black person. Except for all the folks saying “meemaw”. If you learn it from a culture, purchase it from that same culture. It’s actually more beneficial to do so. Why? You’re getting what you need. Not a gentrified overpriced item. If the French taught you, but from the French. You get it?

I'm sorry, totally respect your point. But "religious bonnets" is giving pilgrim vibes, and their bonnets have a completely different functional and cultural context. Idk what other religious bonnets you're talking about but am genuinely curious
