Can You 3D Scan Tools With Your Phone, Model, and Print It?

We love to Mod out tools, cars, or just about anything really. How can we make them work better, make less work for us and save time. In this video we look at the process of 3D scanning with a phone and we also take those 3D scans all of the way to making real functional parts on my Ender 3 V2 printer to see if the parts will really last.
The software shown in the video is from a Company called POLYCAM, I am not affiliated with them, here is the link if you are interested in checking them out. poly.cam/ If you have tested other software which works better, please let me know, I am interested in trying them out. If you don't have a LIDAR capable phone, you can also upload photos on their website, I believe the scale and rotations will not be calculated automatically, but have yet to test this myself.
If you'd like to become a patron to help this channel grow and get involved with future video ideas, here is the link: / needitmakeit
As usual I am printing these parts from the cheap grey PETG on my Ender 3 V2 printer, I am still going strong with the M4 Voron extruder setup. My only complaint is still the ease of loading filament.
If you'd like to support the channel, the links below are affiliate links, a small % of any sale goes towards making future videos for this channel and thank you everyone for your interest and support!

If you don't mind a little cleanup, you can dust your shiny surfaces with something like sawdust or add a watery/runny toothpaste mixture to a toothbrush and flick it onto the surface and let it dry to give it a flat, speckled surface pattern, and easy to wipe off after.

Ideally, Photogrammetry software likes to differentiate a given pixel from its neighboring pixels. For the regions that were giving problems, apply a temporary contrasting color, such as dollar store athletes foot powder spray. A light dust coat works best so that you can see the background color between the powder droplets. It also dries faster. Allow adequate drying time so the wetness doesn't appear different as the spray dries between image captures

@@brad3378 Thank you kindly! I have lots of ideas for using this software and I'd imagine it will improve dramatically in the coming years. I'd like to see the objects come in as useable shapes to see interferences and to use faces as reference, rather than eyeballing it to get it close.

Quick things to consider is to 1: have an item in view for scaling purposes (the meshes usually import way off scale from Polycam) and 2: export as an FBX file as it brings in the color/photo mapping info (the other option for fusion 360 only bring in the mesh )

@@NeedItMakeIt I still measure ( EVEN IF photogrammetry was perfect, we always measure ) - but the time saved by not having to BUILD the whole thing in Fusion 360 is massive.
