Thanks Andrea! Putting them inside a cloche sounds like a really cool idea - I guess you're using really large bottles. What size egg shells do you aim for? I couldn't decide which might be better here so I went for a mix but I think the sac/lining didn't help things

Totally agree. I'm not perfect but I try very hard not to just repeat things and it turned out to be very wise in this case! Disappointed and surprised by the first two results to be honest - I even made the copper react and turn blue to test that it actually was copper that I bought (it just didn't make the edit).

Also around my brassica tunnel the nettles are wild only leaves touching the ground getting nibbled so far ill have to top up the mulch and I water through a pipe so the ground dries quicker as always happy gardening Richardx

Thank you so much! It's a great question about wet perlite. I did bring a watering can upstairs and soaked the tray (and my landlord's carpet) but Arthur didn't really like it and stopped moving. I think he was a bit tired too so I abandoned it. The pots with perlite and copper in the greenhouse at the end were wet and untouched. Outside seemed fine as long as the perlite isn't dispersed - I think the birds kicked it about and then the slugs came in. My thinking is it still sticks to the slug and they dislike it but potentially less so than when it's dry. Didn't directly observe that and I've tried a few patches outside to test but the blackbirds seem to be kicking it up. I feel like it's definitely a good solution for pots where drying is quick, and probably still helpful when wet but can't confirm. So I found a paper that used a caffeine solution at 2% concentration and found that had better effect than at 1% (60% and 95% mortality respectively). I can't remember the caffeine content in coffee off-hand unfortunately. They applied the spray to the growing medium and also directly to the slugs. The paper is here if you're interested digitalcommons.unl.edu/icwdm_usdanwrc/470/ (Caffeine as a repellent for slugs and snails, Hollingsworth et al. Nature 417 2002) but possible you've already read it. Let me know if it works, I might have to try it myself tbh - it's July and they are still everywhere!

That sounds smart. I saw someone use rotting fruit - pears maybe - nearby as a decoy, but I've not tested it. They don't seem to be interested in apples

Thanks Chris! I can imagine that they are a lot sharper and less flexible. I guess they do a better job of stabbing the slug. Agree it's been wild this year - I imagine even more so in the wetter areas. My garden is a mess which definitely doesn't help...

Lol well I ended up recording that bit a few times because I kept fumbling the words or dropping the cutlery so I chewed on a lot of snails. Unfortunately I had to buy 36 for an order so two dozen are in the freezer right now. Beer was interesting. I did record a section about how they potentially attract slugs from other gardens but I had to cut a lot out and I hadn't tested the origin of each slug so couldn't confirm. Advice is to put the trap outside the veg patch just in case. I did find that Guinness was much better than some of the golden ales I tried - the bowl completely filled with slugs while with lighter beers it was less full and I guess some might have had a sip and slid off. It would be interesting to see if slugs are into craft beers full of citra or not (I imagine not) or ones where they chuck loads of yeast in after brewing to make it foam. Need to find out if I can claim them as tax deductible.... Sandpaper might work. I guess more coarse would be worse for them. Main thing seems to be to either puncture or dehydrate them. The copper was weird because it definitely effects their body chemistry in some way and they hate it. From what I could tell the wider the copper and the smaller the slug the better that defence works which might be why the greenhouse pots did a little better. But I imagine a big slug can do anything it wants. Arthur was probably only medium size for my garden sadly. Nematode sprays (maybe) or planting repelling plants or getting some ducks or hedgehogs in is probably the way to go
