Can You Beat Fallout New Vegas’s Dead Money DLC Without Taking Any Damage? (in text form)
This run is different than any challenge I’ve done so far for a very simple reason that you probably already knew: it’s downloadable content. It’s meant to be played during or after you beat the main story, which means you’re not expected to do it as soon as you leave Doc Mitchell’s house. Because the challenge isn’t to beat the DLC at Level 1, I did something that may be controversial. I used console commands to level me up to 20, which is the minimum level suggested for starting Dead Money. In an effort to keep things somewhat fair, rather than dumping all my points into Skills that I’d rely on like Speech, Sneak, or Guns, I decided to get every skill up to 40, then I put the 9 leftover points into my tag skills: the skills I just said I’d normally rely on. You’re probably wondering about Perks. Well, I chose Confirmed Bachelor, Fortune Finder, Lady Killer, and Intense Training, with Educated being the last perk I chose so that I’d get its effects going forwards. Then, to try to balance things out again, which in retrospect didn’t matter, like, at all, I removed Confirmed Bachelor and Lady Killer via console commands. The entire point of this was to go into Dead Money with an as average character as possible.
Alright, into the game. I started out by making my way to the Abandoned Brotherhood of Steel bunker to begin the DLC. I did get sexually assaulted by a group of Cazadors on the way there, but the DLC hadn’t started yet so it doesn’t matter. I went down a ladder, got attacked with gas, and woke up in front of a fountain with a collar around my neck and an old man giving me orders. Pudding, uh, Bill Cosby joke. Yeah, I got nothing.
My mission was simple: find and recruit three others to help Daddy Elijah get into the Sierra Madre Casino. There are only a few problems: 1) the thick cloud of poisonous gas 2) the collar around my neck that will explode if I take a step in the wrong direction and 3) the Ghost People who, just like almost every other monstrosity to grace the Mojave Wasteland and its nearby areas, are a result of experiments done by brains in jars in a giant crater. I also have almost no armor, a laughably small amount of weapons to work with, and no healing items. Oh, and there’s the whole “any damage of any kind kills me because I set my max health to 1” thing. So, not the worst situation I’ve found myself in.
With the extra damage inflicted from stealth attacks, the Holorifle is taking out a Ghost Person with a single shot. After I found out I wasn’t completely out of hope, I picked up some Chuck E Cheese tokens from a fountain, entered the Villa Police Station, and exploded for the first time. The beeping collar is significantly more annoying than the red cloud, but it’s present throughout the entire run so I’m not gonna be a little whiner and complain about it anymore.
I continued searching the Police Station for a way to free the God Dog, found a helmet which was irrelephant [faint elephant sound] since I couldn’t take any damage in the first place, picked up a Police Pistol that would allow me to save my Holorifle for tougher foes, went down to the basement, looted more stuff, got the Dog Command Tape, cautiously approached the holding cell, played the tape, and initiated dialog with the beast.

@@marshahammack4503 A similar bug happens in the old Civilization games. Once you get far enough through the research tree, every civ in your game gets their aggression level reduced. Gandhi, being historically passive, gets his aggression reduced so low, it does the classic overflow thing computers do and his aggression level becomes the maximum. That's where the Gandhi nukes everything meme comes from.

@@theomegablade6415 lonesome road is a walk in the park. The only challenge is Ulysses. And that's IF you fight him. You can still one shot him with a sniper+psycho +sneak attack and stealthboy to escape again to restart.

Fun fact, if you time things *just* right, you can take all of the gold bars. From what I remember, you have to lock Elijah in the vault and slowly make your way to the elevator before he activates the forcefields.

5 year old comment thread but I just did it. You don't need anything crazy. Just have Eli come down, and crouch next to the tesla. When he deactivates his forcefield and walks out, jump his ass and if you need to move his body as close as you can to the forcefield and dump the bars in him. Then sprint through the facility,, and when you get to the starting point, if eli is close enough, you can loot him through the focefield. You may have to go third person. Grab the shit, then run like hell to the exit. It's complete doable on a first try

Can confirm it’s possible to sneak past Elijah with all of the loot with at least 70 sneak and no stealth boy or stims. Sneak behind the generator to the right side of the glass entrance dome. Keeping out of Elijah’s line of sight can be tricky, and you must wait until you see his body turn towards the terminal before you can make a break for the doorway with the force field. At which point it’s a save scum slow run to the finish line. I’ve done this every single time. Only killed Elijah once for the achievement.

For everyone leaving comments about what happens at 8:20, here's some explanation: If you get crippled by an enemy (or anything else, like falling) and then immediately reload a quicksave, which the game did automatically because any damaged killed me, you'll see the Crippled HUD Icon *after* you reload the save. Hearing Elijah, Dean, Dog and Christine deliver that speech at the end of the dlc will forever give me goosebumps, the delivery was fucking perfect. Then that final message just before you leave, Dead Money is underappreciated.

@@ProblmSolvd Dead Money is my favorite, it's got a really cool self contained story and the Sierra Madre is really dripping with atmosphere, one of the coolest locations in the game. Don't gotta let go when you make it out with the treasure though!

Well not really,the cloud only brings you to the brink of death (stated by elijah himself) and won't actually kill you on it's own. The concentrated cloud will though.

Yep I do all the dlc because the main game ends it and I went to dead money at level one and worse was it was not intentionality and I never played a fallout game oh and I got ffd up by cazadors before I got to the dlc so crippled badly and no healing items and a lot of bad quick saves I beat the dlc after 12 hours and was round about lvl 20 gotta say I loved it so much that I reset my character and did every dlc at lvl 1 to see what dlc levels you up the most gonna say the divide broke me.

New Vegas is great but the one gripe I had with every DLC was that the companions you get there can't leave with you. I found that completely inane. They tried to shoehorn in a 'life' lesson for Dead Money to explain why none of them came along but I still thought it was pretty lazy.

MediocritysMuse I don’t see it as laze as much as it was to make you feel separation. A big point of that dlc is to have an insanely stark contrast to just about everything in game other DLC included. As for the no companions from the other DLCs, who cares? The only one that would be worth a damn in the rest of the game would be Joshua Graham.

By setting his health to 1, mitten squad effectively negated any cloud effect - as the poison effects in every game reduce your health to minimum (1) but can never end you.

Dead Money might just be my favorite part of New Vegas. The atmosphere and story are really enthralling to me. It's like the feeling of entering a location in the main game, discovering some holotapes or scenery that tells a tragic story, and you just want to learn more about it. Dead Money captured that feeling perfectly.

Great Video. When I beat Dead Money the first time I spent 2 hours trying to trap him in the vault while I took it all. I had to plan my movements down to Perfection while Overencumberd but I succeeded.

If you exhaust all of veronica's dialogue about Father Elijah and are villified by NCR, you can side with Elijah and get the secret ending of the Cloud helping you at Hoover Dam. Not sure if it actually does come through though.
