I just finished this challenge with UCP fast spearmen and god even that was painful. He built up to 20k gold then I played like an AI and slowly ground him to dust with mass attack waves. In the end I had to destroy almost all his castle by hand and lost over 7000 troops

I loved the og stronghold 1 soundtrack, really nostalgic

I think it is possible, but it would take a long time, you can use the trick of putting walls in your castle and leave a small opening for all the enemy troops to pass through and accumulate the spearmen there, it is an easy defense, and that way you accumulate as many spearmen as you can for the attack

@Jefflenious I appreciate the effort here and all in your videos as well I like them! :) I've just finished the challenge myself with the mentioned 2 rules , and I finally managed to kill the Wolf after 3 and half hour of intense micro eco and army of the mighty spearmen. I want to let you know I used the UCP for increase health vs ranged and run by default option for the spearmen, since Wolf has the ability to ignite the pitch with his europ archer with the UCP option active so for balance I use it too, but I think honestly i've would kill him anyways, just more hours needed. The only reason that challenge is hard is cuz he uses the pitch against your attacks. Eco phase: For eco I went full bread ofc and two hops with beer, negative fear factor at the start, and when defending and attacking swipe to max positive. selling stones, iron, bread and some spears overproduced ,taxes when I could, IMPORTANT keep always 100 popularity so the recruit rate of spearmen is max. I used the water pot exploit to mass recruit spearmen about 120 after set off those water pots, you could do it without sure but is harder to keep recruiting while destroying his eco buildings but is doable I guess. After some time I reached a point where I had 15k gold so I set off my 50 poleturners, and just buy the spears. Defense phase: Only two times Wolf attacked me, I organized my defense to garrison and keep all of my spearmen and the lord around my base, near the buildings (hundreds of bakeries and poleturners) and just wait the troops come close, then set them in aggro stance and obliterate them, doing this def approach will ensure wolf's crossbows can't target easily your spearmen, cuz they sights is blocked from all of the hundreds of buildings, so you can kill the melee soldiers easily without having the xbows support them, and then finish the xbows easily too cuz they come very close and they do not have any chances for range killing. For repelling siege eng. is a bit harder, I set the spearmen point just close the iron in front, so only when his catapults come close I send some about 20/30 to destroy them, doing the same when he sends the main siege, Im gonna kill quickly his engineers before all the other troops arrived, he's dumb cuz he sends first his eng, so you can kill them easily and not worry about siege engs later when the siege begins. As I mentioned before, he attacked me 2 times, after the second times I start blasting his hairy wolf ass. Attack phase: First attack I've send about 400 spearmen + Lord to just havoc most I can, destroying houses and weap workshops while taking care about my Lord making sure hes not gonna run over some killing pits or some ( as your lord did lol ) swordsman and pikes who go out aggro tryna kill my lord. Here the main problem is the pitch, it will 100% pulverized most of your army, so you must use your Lord effectively to destroy as many building as possible house and weap workshops are the priority, then ales and church. As soon as your Lord reach yellow healthbar send him back to the keep otherwise hes not gonna make it back home :(, at this point his economy is ruined forever, no more attack from him, just hes gonna send arab archer and some xbows and archer but very little few so the worse section have end. Now is super important *to keep destroying all of his quarries, ironmines ,food buildings and woodcutters* . Doing this will keep him useless inactive while of course, recruiting and keep increasing spearmen army. After some time, you may have reached the max army unit as I had ( 1160 spearmen max army count reached). Now you want to attack him, set max positive fear factor before, and rally all your spearmen at the opposite way where you attacked ( is the worse way to attack that way you did), at enough distance to keep them away from the range of the tower ( only the mangonel and ballistas may be shooting) , from here send about 50 spearmen to bait his pitch and his boiling eng on the corner, then send 50 more to bait more pitch, same way ofc, you have to attack from only that side cuz his xbows and bows from the keep can't shoot properly your army, cuz they have cover from his buildings at the corner. If some pitch happen to ignite just dont send them straight make 'em turn around it, but after the bait there is no more of pitch, destroy the gate ASAP and send them to the keep, when I killed him, from 1160 spearmen they dropped to about 400, and the Lord I didn't use him in the final attack cuz he was very low health. When I've launched the final attack, his troops counts was near to 250, ofc try to attack him as soon as his last second attack finished. Sry If smth is incorrect and for the long comment lol but honestly right now Ive spare time so.. yea thank you :)

Archers can take 5 arrow shots and spearmen can only take 3 which is honestly kinda dumb and i really wish spearmen were just a little bit more tanky maybe as much as arabian archers at least....

I tried something similar like this, but also included slaves for more fodder. It was like I was playing SC2 Co-op using Stukov again.

Using small group to destroy his building would eventually starve him

Maybe beatable if you lower his gatehouse hp to red in one attack, then blitz the next one with a massive force

After playing with UCP for so long, it feels weird to see them spearmen walk instead of sprint lol. Initially I suspected you might not count shields as units since they can't attack and use them to cheese the battle, but glad I was wrong :D

I just completed it. My trick was to send small groups of spearman all over the map and deny him resources (on the map you played, this is possible), while using constant pressure on his one gate to prevent him from marching out (the gate is always closed). Individual spearman can survive if you hide them between his buildings and in the corners of his walls. The final assault was alot more difficult than I thought and it took several waves of hundreds of spearman to conquer his keep even when he was already bankrupt. I also use a hotkey spamclicker (I hold down the key and it'll go click, click, click, click, etc. very quickly) which allowed me to spend more time microing spearman and less time on building units which is a lot of work normally.

yes respect, maybe train mass spearman and command all of em in the same time to destroy the gate with the lord might be an option. Ofcourse i dunno how many you can train in a single game. an other tactic is cut down the stone resources of the enemey but it's too close to the archers...:/

Try to beat a UCP buffed wolf with speedy tough spearmen from that mod.

On unofficial patch spearman has improoved arrow resistance and runs by default.

Did you tried maximum army size?

To begin with, popularity should be maximized so that spearmen receive +25% to attack. There is an idea to destroy all the economic buildings of the wolf, and kill his army in defense. As long as he doesn't have any people left. Then make the maximum army of spearmen and kill him

I have an idea of a new challenge. Try to beat every lord using only engineers and their machines. It is not hard, but fun challenge

Hello jeff i have a challenge for you. Can you beat this map having 7 wolf opponents having 10000 gold all using only slinger and turnaller only. Conditions is you cannt produce any food and cannt construct Religion buildings.Have to make fear factors and cannt defeat any wolfs early.you have to find a way to balance factors. Special condition if needed: You can recruit 40 assassins if needed to complete this mission.but cannt use this in early 15 mins world time

it is possible i think. i played multiplayer with a friend and we defeated other friends only with spearmen. it was crusader extreme so we had 3000 spermen at least, but human player has been killed :D

Try in Extreme where troop limit is higher.

I can beat any AI opponent with any mele unit actually (even with slaves if you want) . But I can't do it without any archery units. They are my key ingredient to victory

I tried, exact same map exact same spot and gold, noooo way, cuz if you don't kill him fast later can't do it.But, i think, if you put him farrrr away, chances are much bigger cuz he cannot harras me then.Maybe i make some narrow passage for his troops to must meet mine and maybe, just maybe i can kill him..

Remember when we all talked crap about the rat I got killed by him because I left my Lord alone outside of my castle for a minute I don't know why the AI decided to send him there because I was building an army to go murder the last rat and then the wolf in that map where you have the wolf being defended by three rats of course the rat decides to take the greatest moment in history he matches his huge Army of spearmen and they go brutally murder me even though I had an army of archers horse archers and even slaves to just attempt to defend my Lord he gets brutally murdered by the rat😅😂😝

The key could be in constantly ruining his economy (as you tried to do) and barracks/houses, which you did not do and keep spamming units to destroy as much buildings as possible.

Why didn't you use fire pitch? The only requirement was "use spearmen as yer (melee) unit". Pitch is just a utility defense like walls :) You easily could've set his entire army on fire each time and then farmed for 1000 spearmen.

Honestly, 8 gold for a spearman is too much. 1 or 2 gold would have been much more reasonable and would make them actually useful as meat shield at least.

7 rats can beat a wolf?

With enough numbers Spearman can do alright in pure melee fights and can be somewhat cost effective, but against ranged they just get destroyed. Spearman without ranged support are simply cannon fodder for the endless meatgrinder, so this is kinda hard to watch. Imagine Spearman only against Caliph or Nizar. No thanks.

Honestly the disrespect spears get throughout this series is irritating. They shouldve made armoured spearmen or sth or made them s tiny bit more tanky and with decent damage. In this game even a thousand spearmen can be massacred without being able to accomplish much
