Favourite drinking song in the Royal Navy... At least it used to be; they probably don't even allow alcohol anymore. Just in case someone forgets to close a valve and we end up refuelling the south Atlantic. It was ONE time!

@@Eileen139 Lol, possibly. Interesting fact: A smaller cat o'nine tails was sometimes used on ships boys instead of a rattan cane. This was lighter and only had six tails and was called a 'pussy cat'. Hence the term we use today. ('pussy' meaning 'purser' a term often used to define some shipboard item of lesser quality; as the ships purser would usually go for the cheaper alternative when buying supplies)

Irish people took a lot of musical influence from Great Britian: Jigs, Fiddles for example. The parting glass being a scottish song attached to a famous scottish tradition of the parting glass tradtion in scotland. One Irish muscian a hundred years ago talking about how most of the songs he song were actually scottish/English in origin because at one point Jigs, fiddles and folk music was not very Irish thing but the sound came from Great Britian like Scotland and England. So yeah, Irish music is full of non-Irish origin songs because of it, Wild Mountain Thyme is a rearangement of a famous scottish poem. Yeah, you know what that type of music is becoming more and more part of Irish culture as of British, look I am Scottish with an Irish mother and English/Scottiah father so I am all for the mixing of music on the Islands, it is definately a sound that binds us together.

Buy a copy of pete seegers "How to play the 5 string banjo" Kelly essential did petes basic strumming and 2 finger style.

Historically, the Irish couldn't afford to have much to call their own. Even if the fact is that those famous songs are not originally from Ireland, their gene-engraved gift took them, made them nice to sing, turned them into something Irish. This is the point to note - to make the best of life.

Never once heard this referred to as our '2nd National Anthem'. I can think of half a dozen that better fit that bill (and that's *without* invoking Put 'Em Under Pressure, The Breakfast Roll Song or Maniac 2000). In fact, I can think of at least 3 other *Luke Kelly* tracks that are more likely to be thought of as substitute Nationsl Anthems. That pedantry aside, good bit of info here!
