So who do you think won the point, Juliana or Jay?

Does it matter if the front row player leaves his feet? Can they stand there flat footed and knock it back? What if they pushed it over or set it back over on 1?

@@ElectrifyingUno Good question, what do you think? Do you think it should be legal? I think he has to wait until it comes over the net into his space or the ref would call it a block.
@moujik2253
@moujik2253 Жыл бұрын
@@ElectrifyingUno no, jumping or not is irrelevant, only the height of the touch matters. A block is an attempt to prevent he ball from passing over the net, or slowing it down as it passes. If he touches that ball, it's an illegal block. The only chance of this being controversial is if he touches the net (and not the ball) as the ball pushes the net against his hands. In that case it wouldn't count as either a net touch or a ball touch, yet his attempt at an illegal block might still be preventing the ball from crossing the net. But if he does touch the ball (he does here), point to the server. In either case, replaying the point when in doubt is fine.

Judging by where it landed, the speed, the minor spin and the block, there is a chance it might have rolled over the net and maybe the block stopped the net from flipping over allowing the ball onto the other side. His block may have changed how the net would react and so I would either say a redo or serving team's point. (slow down to 0.25x speed at 0:25 or 0:26 right on the frame it touches the net) However if his hands didn't even touch the ball then I suppose it's the other teams point.

If you mean directly spike in response to a high arcing serve, that would be illegal on either side of the 10 foot line

@@moujik2253 yes, about the 12 foot line possibly the 15 foot line and always behind the 10 foot line because I also play outside with sky servers and others so if it’s within my hitting range I do it. Doubles fours or sixes because I play everything and I never get called. And also reverse Co-ed

@@volleydave2012 well by fivb ruling it very much should be called. Setups with mixed levels are pretty much the only kind of setup where the ruling would kick-in, incidentally it's also the kind of setup where referees are most likely to be unaware of the official rulings on rare-ish plays like that.

Whether the ball would've gone over or not isn't relevant here, the blocking rule will take precedence during the play. Even if the ball wasn't going over, it was illegal for the player to block the ball. What you should do is post the blocking rule in the video as well and that would clear it up. The blocking rule is very similar in all rule sets; FIVB, USAV, PAVO (NCAA) and NFHS. Blocking is the action of a player(s) close to the net that deflects the ball coming from the opponent by reaching higher than the top of the net at the moment of contact. So the only thing that should be considered was 1) was it a blocking action, 2) did he contact the ball. There is nothing in the rule that says a block isn't a block if the ball wouldn't go over. It happens quite often that a player blocks a ball entirely on the opponents side (which is legal after the attack is complete) when the ball wouldn't have made it across the net. So the short answer is if he made contact with the ball the opponent scores a rally point and is allowed to serve again, same server. If he didn't touch it then the receiving teams receives the rally point and rotates to the next server as there wasn't a block if the ball wasn't touched. There is nothing in the rule that says it's illegal to attempt to block (but it's a rather unsporting thing to do).

it is 100% relevant. no rule takes precedence over another, it's chronological: whatever fault happens first is counted. the only exception is when two or more faults happen simultaneously. So, if the ball is not going over, then it's a service fault and any faults that occur afterwards are irrelevant, such as blocking the serve.

Illegal block. The player was reaching higher than the top of the net and contacted the ball, so it's a block. Blocking the opponents' serve is forbidden.

The ball was in contact with the tape and so it must not have been completely over the net, so not illegal by the rules he cited. Also, I don’t agree that Jay hit the ball, but that’s a matter of opinion.

1. Blocking motion by opposing front row player. That's not illegal and would be an incomplete block if he didn't touch the ball. 2. Did he touch the ball? Hard to say from this angle. If yes, illegal play. If not, trolling.

I'm a PAVO referee, it's illegal because it's obviously attacking the ball above the height of the net.

The ball going to go over or not does not matter. He jumped or not also does not matter. The only thing that matters is whether he touched anything, which we cannot know for sure by watching this video. If he touched the ball, it's a block on a serve and therefore loses a point. If he did not touch the ball, it's not a block, no matter his hand positions. If he touched the net, it's a net fault and therefore loses a point. In summary, if he touched anything, he loses a point; if he touched nothing, he wins a point.
@sk.43821

Difficult. When the ball pushes the net to touch the blocker's hands, it is not a net fault and no completed block by contact with the ball. I'd say the referee (or democratic decision in this case) has to decide whether the ball would have crossed the net plane by bending the top of the net. If this was prevented by the action, one might perhaps call it a completed block on the service hit.

@@sk.43821 Good point about the ball pushes the net to touch the player's hands. But in that case, he did NOT touch the net, the net pushed by the ball touched him, so he is not at fault.

ball going over or not definitely matters. if it's not going over, then he can't commit a fault because it was never going over. if it was going over, then a different set of options needs to be explored.

Are we sure it even touched his hands? It honestly doesn't look like he touched it at all, which should be service error and side out. But I think if it hits his hand, there is no real way of knowing for sure that it was not going over. I don't think you want to give that much discretion to refs to decide if a ball could have possibly rolled up on a loose net, or had some weird top spin that allowed it to roll up and over. So any ball that hits the blockers hands above the net should be an illegal block even if it is just a small sliver of the ball above the net. That's a simple case of a player screwing himself over by not following the rules and giving a point to the other team when it would have definitely been their point. Kind of like a basketball player goaltending on a ball that was 99.9% certainty not going to go in if it was let go. In any league I have ever played in, this would almost certainly be called a point for the serving team anyway. Just for him being a douche. Men blocking women is already bad. Illegal in rec leagues where I play. so blocking a woman's serve is extra douchey and if there is any doubt whatsoever of it touching him or not....no do-over, his team loses a point.

Jay shouldn't be in the blocking position on a serve in the first place. Is it legal? Yes, but its not a good look. On the re-serve, he is sitting down. This kind of attitude would drive me nuts if he was on my team.
