If you're a child of the 80's and want to relive the 8-bit joy of programming and gaming with a Commodore 64 (C64), or you're just wondering what all the fuss is about, then this two part episode of Retro Now is for you!
In part 2 of this episode, I'll show you one of the options I talked about in part 1, and how you can build a new 2020s version of the Commodore 64. I'll take you through the process of unboxing all the parts, putting them together and demoing the finished unit.
I'm going to be using a new FPGA based Commodore 64 system board, called the Ultimate 64 Elite, from a company called Gidion's Logic Architectures This is not an emulator or a re-creation using an embedded emulator, but a true modern version of the Commodore 64, with all the ports that you would expect to see on the original. It also has USB ports, an Ethernet port and HDMI output. It even has sockets so you can add two physical SID chips!

Note that the Pixelwizard shop has now closed and the new cases can be bought from Individual Computers instead. This is the link to their site: icomp.de/shop-icomp/en/produkt-details/product/c64c-case.html

I LOVE this being a new way to keep the legacy of the C64 alive.

There are cheaper alternatives, but the Ultimate 64 really feels like a true modern day version of the C64.

This is really cool. Thanks for making this video. Making me want to build one like yours now. I've been using emulation but this is really motivating to build and use instead.

It's not a cheap way to relive the experience, but it's probably the closest thing to a modern version of the Commodore 64, and it is absolutely packed with features. Whilst the THEC64 offers a very good (and cheaper) alternative, the Ultimate 64 has the advantage that you can use real C64 peripherals with it.

Get a original 1541 drive. The first ones were amusingly huge. The power supply was built in. Yes your system can load imagines faster but its fun to load floppies sometimes at least while we can still coax old disks to spin up. I used to go and play on a neighbors C64, it was a Breadbin with the massive drive. I was always impressed as at home we had a tape loading Sinclair Spectrum. I still loved the little Spectrum though. I intend to upload some videos of some of my more rare computers as time allows. Of Commodores I have some c16's, Vic 20's , c64's, 128's including the external keyboard model, A plus 4, Amiga 500's and a currently non working Amiga 600.

It's up there on my wanted list. I was tempted by a very nice looking 1541 II recently, but it sold almost as soon as I saw it. I also want to get a Spectrum as the one I had broke years okay and I gave all my Spectrum stuff to a friend. I'd certainly be interested in seeing videos of your collection, but yes finding time is the real problem.

I have three of them, and they were terrible in the 80s and are worse today. As soon as I get my floppies copied over to a modern medium, they're going up for sale. I recommend getting a cheap EPROM burner and some blank chips.

I'm a Commodore lover as well. I have an old school flat C128, a TheVic20 from RGL. I also use the Vice Emulator on my laptop and desktop PCs. This build you did looks awesome. I am curious about adding a user port. where would it be located as it looks like the space is taken up by the USB & HDMI ports? I assume the case would have to be modified in some way.

I also now have a TheVIC20 and a Raspberry Pi based machine that uses BMC64 (which itself uses VICE) and they all do a great job of emulating the real thing (which I also have a few of). As for the user port on the U64, you would have to buy an additional adapter and cut an extra hole in the case to accommodate it. It's the one drawback to this board, especially if you need to use the user port.

Thanks. Fortunately, I built this before the chip shortage kicked in. The Ultimate 64 boards are now on a long lead time, but the Reloaded Mk 2 does seem to be still available.

Is that an RGB header at about 4:27 (where it says "LED Strip" below the FPGA chip) for an LED strip like you see often in modern computers? Can you RGB the inside of your C64 Ultimate or light up through a keyboard?
@RetroNowTV

I think it is. Although I haven't done it, I have seen several examples of people with the Ultimate 64 in a transparent case with RGB lighting.

Truth is with Amiga 4ever and C64 forever, I'm having more fun now than then 😊. Because of Total Commander I can read. d64 and. adf and make my own floppies in seconds. Soooo cool. 🤗👍

Yes, I have both and they're great, especially if you just want a casual game. I particularly like Amiga Forever as it makes Amiga emulation so simple. There are now so many ways to keep enjoying these old machines, including lots of new software. 😁

Sadly, Pixelwizard has had to shut down due to ill health. However, Individual Computers (icomp.de) have taken over distribution of the cases. I believe they were already producing the cases and Pixelwizard was selling them.

I think the way craigslist is chock full of hoarders willing to pay "the best price for your unwanted old computers," you might as well buy new manufactured parts... but it's really disappointing that you can't make a computer for $600 today, when that same computer cost 600 Reagan dollars brand new. What are all these people doing with these computers? Stacking them in their basements so their grandchildren can become eBay millionaires?
