The short answer is "YES!" Degenerative disc disease is a painful spinal condition that can affect daily life, and if you developed it as a result of military service, you may be eligible for disability benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
To qualify for VA disability benefits, you'll need to have official documentation of your degenerative disc disease, as well as evidence that it was caused by your military service.
If you're approved for VA disability benefits, you'll receive monthly payments that can help offset the costs of medical treatment and make everyday life more manageable. So if you're suffering from degenerative disc disease, it's definitely worth considering a VA disability claim.

Let the VA pay for an MRI, don't leave without a disc with the images, and then go see a civilian orthopedic doctor. The VA radiologist stated there was nothing wrong with my neck (even though I went due to pain). The civilian doctor saw DDD at my C4 - C5 in my neck. The same thing happened to my lumbar back injury. Now, I get to show this new evidence to my C&P exam for my increase.

My only issue with this, (letting the VA pay for imaging) is I had xrays done on my back at the VA and they came back fine. I wasn't fine though. I couldn't walk in there, I had to be wheel chaired in. The following day, I went to my civilian orthopedic, took xrays of my back and their's showed DDD at the L5-S1. So it's conflicting xrays. Now we're doing MRI to confirm those findings. So I totally understand letting the VA pay for this, then take to civilian doc. But I now have even more trust issues with the VA after their xrays had no findings.

I will have to do the same. I can't even bend my neck back and forward like tilting back. Got an x ray but found nothing so will try to get an MRI but appointments take so long

@@MH-il1lk I learned this the hard way. Active duty, about to retire, have had back issues for years, had an x-ray a long time ago. Only after finding out the difference between x-rays and MRIs did I start requesting MRIs and low and behold they actually find my back is full of bulging, impinging, herniated discs. Same thing happened with my shoulder and they found a tear.

Wow, you and I have the exact same back disability with radiocupy. I just joined the "Hundo" Club after 3yrs on the VA Rollercoaster. I retired in Jan 2004 with 20%, didn't claim anything until Nov 2019, I wished I'd have known then what I've learned years later and watching your videos "CC" definitely kept me on track, in my Gomer Pyle voice thank you, thank you, thank you!

Combat Craig I'm still trying to get the rating I merit but watching your videos has helped me along the way. I have tried to do research and make my claims based on solid medical evidence. I signed up for your full never expiring Boot Camp because I thought you deserved to be compensated for helping your fellow veterans. I'm currently at 90% but they denied me on some of the main issues that would take me to 100. I'm planning on an appeal. I'll be going into the boot camp to see if something can help me with that. I believe I need a better nexus letter. Thanks again for all you do!

Got referral to rheumatology to rule out rheumatoid arthritis. Well the VA confirm that I did not have rheumatoid arthritis, the VA doctor did state I had three herniated disc & it could be related to my military service from the fifty-pound ruck sack & road marches/ medic bags I had to carry but that he could not document that in my records. 🙄😒 Thanks for all of the helpful content you continue to create & educate us all with. My fights not over.🙏

For a couple years my VA Drs lied about my spine xrays said I "was fine" Ill call them out, Dr Bataglia and Keitems. Anyway when I got my new Dr he was like "Oh no there is nothing fine about your xrays here take a look." Finally recently the VA said they will finally may me for it. Not only do I have bulged discs and a compressed spine but its also curved as a result of lack of treatment.

@@theMister07 I appreciate it. Like everybody here my client process has been rather lengthy I've been fighting non-stop since 2012 I got out of the military in 2010. At first I had a highly incompetent vet rep that did the most minimal she could do and it wasn't getting me anywhere then for a couple years I started doing claims myself and that wasn't getting me anywhere so finally I hired an attorney in 2018 and finally everything's almost completely wrapped up.

I got TDIU for DDD,lumbar spondylosis,partial paralysis of the sciatic nerve with radiculapathy in L3-L5 from a facet slip I suffered in service. Without me getting an MRI,the VA would’ve screwed me. Good luck everybody!

It's good info. My doc noted radiculopathy, and "mildly severe disc degenerative" along with cervicalgia. I was waiting for the right time to file a secondary. I Filed cervicalgia 5 months ago and got nothing back yet but "waiting for records". Cervicalgia ---> degeneration --> radiculopathy. seems to be the correct path.

@@CombatCraig My C-Spine is in worse shape but the lumbar hurts much worse. I just filed with the VA two days ago. I should have gone to sick call after getting dumped off of a moving M-113 during Team Spirit '85. Of course, we didn't do that back then.

My L5-S1 got messed up when I was in the Navy, they had a surgeon shave down the disk because it was pressing into my nerves so much it was causing paralysis and unbelievable pain that I couldn't move to do even the simplest of moves. Like sitting up or standing up. They said I was "too young" to fuse my spine (I was 23 at the time, happened in 2015) so they opted to give me a spinal Cord Stimulator for pain management. I sometimes have loss of control of my legs and just collapse. After getting my claim back when being medically separated, I find they only awarded me 40% for it. Thankfully my other claims helped to get it added up to 100% P&T

I have have 2 spinal surgeries and i am fused from L3 through S1. It only gave relief for about a year now the next 3 vertibre above the fusion are all herniated. I don't recommend anyone getting a fusion it works only for a short time. Long term you will get net herinations and more pain.

To make a long story short, I ended up being out of work for over 4 months due to back pain. Was at work and went to stand up and couldn't move my legs and the most intense pain started. Ended up getting diagnosed with L4-L5 herniated discs, L5-S1 retrolisthesis, lumbar spondylosis and lumbar radiculopathy. Both of my surgeons said they believe that my back issues, as well as my hip which started giving me problems a couple weeks prior, are caused by my service connected knee injury. I asked if they could put that in writing so I could have a Nexus, and they both declined, saying that they don't write those. Ugh.

Have your PC refer you to Pain Management and then request a MRI! Your results will confirm your injuries and a nexus will not be needed! But first file an intent and once u receive your MRI results submit your results and the rest will fall in place

I currently had ankle surgery, modified brostrom, also found out I have a torn tendon in my shoulder along with DDD and bulged disk in my C3-C7. Insomnia, depression and anxiety and numerous other things. Plus I had a tumor removed out of my thumb. I wonder what my rating will be. What happens if you have great cervical flexibility (I can touch my chin to my chest) but you have poor bending at the waist (on a good day I'm never able to touch toes without sharp pain in my lower spine)? Love your channel!

Hello, I claimed DDD after the VA accepted my accident on IDT weekend (2005) and the L5-S1 disc fusion as being necessary. But they just included the DDD with their previous acceptance and didn't increase the percent...

So heres my question. Served 15 yrs Army infantry. Deplyed 4 times. Hurt my back in afghan 2012. Diagnosed with lumbago and Thoraculumbar spine strain same year. Couple years later got out. Got 10% thoroculumbar spine strain right off bat. Increased to 20% this year. Filed bilateral lumbar Radiculopathy-Sciatica this year but denied. They said my Radiculopathy wasnt from Thoraculumbar strain (even though I never filed it that way) and WASNT from service, but WAS from diagnosis of DDD and Stenosis. What should I do? I currently have 6 bulging discs, scoliosis, stenosis etc. Do i file a new claim for DDD and Stenosis and then file Bilateral Radiculopathy secondary to one of those? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cc Is a depression rating the same as a somatic system rating? Can you get rated for both or only one.I have a depression rating secondary to tinnitus. We all know 10 is all for tinnitus no matter how bad it is.

War dog, great info as always. Quick question, could a primary SCD of DDD in the lumbar spine and right knee diagnosed in 2004, be causing my current secondary issues in my hips and left knee now in 2023? My recent VA appointment was the same old same old meaning do you want us to prescribe more pain killers. I'm two old to keep playing that game so I've scheduled a visit to the best Orthopedic surgeon in my area for his medical opinion. Based on his diagnosis I may file for secondary conditions. Is this a smart move or am I going to just end up poking the bear? Thanks and Semper Fi, Ken

So someone explain this to me. I had a 20% rating for Thorocumlumbar spine strain. I filed for DDD and Spinal Stenosis. All the VA did was change my 20% rating from Thorocumlumbar Spine Strain to DDD and Spinal Stenosis and kept the rating at 20%. Is that right? Seems like I missed out on an extra rating? The DDD and Spinal stenosis was actually from a lumbar MRI.

I have this, in my records. Also waiting SIX MONTHS now after a mental health C&P, (plus a psychical ailment claim that I should not have filed until after the mental health claim was resolved), I'm literally a victim of my own ignorance. It could be months before they schedule the physical C&P, while they sit on the completed mental health decision.

@@ywevis1 You mean the 800# for VBA? I did that. I don't know of any specific C&P office that has it's own phone number. I called the VA/VBA number and requested C&P exam for the specific physical issue. They told me they can't until my STR's arrive.. lol. Then they sent me a letter asking for detail on my contention for a presumptive illness, "What specific illness are you claiming"? I wrote back that it's a Presumptive for NON SPECIFIC and undiagnosed illness, per the VA's own guidelines. A set of undiagnosed and unexplained symptoms that are legally PRESUMPTIVE if you prove you were in that area at the time. Combat Craig did a vid on this and the VA specifically lists it as a valid presumptive. My VA records list long time complaints about them. Now the waiting game again.

@@eQuariuz Call the VA hospital that hosts your c&p office, once given a menu get to the VA operator, they will put you through to the c&p office. Ask them for the number. I goto the Kernersville VA clinic and I got the number directly to the c&p office. They had 2 orders for c&p exams for me, but never called me. I waited a month. I called the c&p office I had one exam 2 days after I called them directly and my last exam is this Tuesday. I called them directly on Wednesday of last week. If the VA put a order in for you to get a c&p it's just sitting on their computer.

Asking for a friend. He recently got 10% for tinnitus and 20% for arthritis in his back. He got toral of 30%. He does have back peoblems and he's walking but barely like he's walking on glass. He has been diagnose with gout and has records and image of bad back on his L5 S1 nerve or spine. Can he file a claim for his gout or DDD or his L5 S1 secondary to his service connected arthritis? Just fyi his MOS is tanker and 11 B.

Question: I filed a supplemental claim for DDD, was denied through claim and HLR, Got my shirt together, and got my medical evidence and DBQ from a private DR., Q: The VA ordered a Lumbar spine X-Ray during my initial claim, 8 months ago, since then I filed a supplemental claim and the VA re-ordered another/ same X-Ray..is this normal? Bicycle accident a year ago while PCSing broke 4 ribs , clavicle and punctured lung. Have had back pain since. Does this not count towards service connection ? I have pain doing ACFT , work, rucking. I didn't realize DDD could be a secondary I have it as my primary. I had a vehicle role over and have significant issues with my back, had hernated and budging disks from the issue. I have severe lower back pain and spasms that caused me to med board and I've always wondered why I'm only getting 20% for my back... ( I get 10 for the secondary radial and other ratings). Sounds like I should be getting something for my other back issues.

@@CombatCraig Thank you I'll have to look into it. I feel very fortunate that I'm at 80% now but I'm rapidly getting to the point where I can't work. I actually work for the VA in the help desk and my health has gotten much worse primarily from sitting so much. I'm lucky to be able to work 15-20 hours a week right now. I could file for TDUI but because I do have a job I'm not really sure how that would work. I also really like helping fellow veterans get into their accounts (password resets navigation support). Makes me feel like I still make a difference.

I have direct service connection degenerative disc disease with radiculopathy. I've always been a pretty flexible person. I have a 10% rating for this. Should I file for an increase? I haven't because I think I hit higher ranges, but I'm not sure if I have a low rating.

Vietnam Vet. I had back surgery 12 years ago, fused L2-S1, now with limited range of motion etc. I don't know how to tie my DDD to any single military experience other than generally daily activities lifting, filling sand bags, building bunkers etc. Anyone have suggestions?

Wait, isn’t spondylosis and DDD the same thing? I’ve always been told I have DDD but my VA rating was Spondylosis.

I have DDD I’ve had four surgeries to lower back to neck surgeries. I’m still in pain. I was in the army for about nine years. How do I get it? Connected to something I’ve got 70% mental but I might. It’s not good. I’m not having a good time with life

I got 70 for lower lumbar on both sides and for some reason two weeks the va upped my compensation to 100% don’t know why, haven’t got a letter yet. Wondered if the pact act had them review my case.

@@ericmata3728 yes primary. I made no 2ndary claims only claims I had been seen for and proven by army docs and given meds for so I knew it would be in my records like Hairline fractures in both my shins or horrible migraines that I had to get meds for and sleep apnea

Ok, I’m confused. The VA drs diagnosed me with Spina bifida occulta, degenerative disc disease and chronic back pain during active duty and after two active duty accidents. They denied service connection saying I had these issues prior to my military service. I think I have a case. It’s all in my medical records and I have a nexus. Are they all primary or is there a secondary? Help

VA just started sending me to chiropractor and dudes frustrated hearing how long I've been going on like this wondering how I'm not crawling from pain. Stemming from my lower lumbar (DDD) my hips are out of place by about an inch and a half, and sacrum off by another inch. I literally have one leg longer than the other from compensating all these years. I have no clue how to turn this evidence into a claim though

No. You can have them both along with like stenosis, arthritis, etc. but it is still one rating, based on range of motion. The exception is IVDS as defined by prescribed bed rest. By the way, bed rest for back issues is a 50 years ago failed treatment for back problems. Leave it to the VA to want to see that as medical evidence in 2022! Sheesh.

I have 10% lower lumbar strain service connected 10% rating for left lower extremity sciatic radiculopathy 10% rating for right lower extremity sciatic radiculopathy 40% rating for overactive bladder with leaking and dribbling 10% rating for right lower extremity femoral radiculopathy 10% rating for non-allergic rhinitis 10% rating for left lower extremity femoral radiculopathy 10% rating for left ankle sprain 70% rating for post traumatic stress disorder with depressive component and generalized anxiety disorder 0% rating for scar, status post right hernia repair 10% rating for tinnitus 90% total service connected I have been told by my VA doctors that I have mild DDD and have went through 5 lower back steroid injections so far with nothing helping my pain. The DAV case worker told me not to file for an increase because they can lower my service connections like they did with my lower back strain. It was at 30% and was dropped to 10%. Since I'm at 90% I have to file for TDIU but how can I claim DDD and bulging discs at L1-L4?

Hey CC, my psychologist is recommending me to a six week program because of anger, anxiety issues. I’m at 70% for ptsd. She said I might have a chance for an increase because my condition has worsened. Is there an increase for ptsd at 70% because my symptoms have gotten worse. I don’t suffer from schizophrenia or any conditions listed at the 100% ptsd.

If you have no history of any symptoms rated at the 100%, you will be denied for an increase. Study the code sheet and study your symptoms.

My biggest problem right now is I am service connected for lumbar sprain. I was recently diagnosed with DDD and a compression fracture. They have decided that the DDD and compression fracture was not service connected, even though my complaints have been consistent since I have gotten out and there is zero instances where I would have gotten a compression fracture after I got out. I can barely stand for 30 minutes without extreme pain, can not bend down or bend side to side. Since they are saying my compression fracture and DDD is not service connected they are saying any increase in disability is not service connected. Finally working with a lawyer to get things done, but sucks I will have to pay them back pay for something that should have been nearly automatic.

No, I am fairly certain it's when your vertebrae slip out of alignment and overlap another vertebrae slightly. Ive seen this DDD Herniated, Ruptured etc on my Actual MRI Films. I suggest after an MRI having your doctor go over the actual images not just the Radiologist reports and take photos of your bad images when the doctor is showing you on his monitor. I can attest to this "a picture is worth 1000 words, the visual impact of looking at the images and also uploading them with your claim are shocking Ughhh

I suffered for years with a lumbar strain for 20% and sciatica rad for 10% and the VA Primary NP wanted to prove I was faking so she signed off on a VA MRI but skipped the upper cervical. I fired her for failing to even look at a suspicious skin cancer that turned out to be a malignant melanoma and the new Primary did the upper MRI as well and the evidence confirmed what my complaints were about and left unaddressed for twenty years in the making. Moderate to severe disc neuropathy contributing issues, DDD and spinal deformation. It’s going on a year now and even though chiropractic was helping; only 12 sessions /year are authorized along w/PT. It’s a crazy process requiring the skill of a medical practitioner to navigate the proper DBQ exam and then it might still get under rated . Only intervention by prayer to Jesus for help from the Holy Spirit will guarantee a fair outcome.

They gave me 20% even after telling me I have a herniated disc and the only way to fix it is by surgery. I’m 24. I’m not having damn back surgery at fucking 24. Especially when I’ve had two surgeries on my right knee and it’s worse now than it was before the damn surgeries lol.

You are not describing DDD you are describing a degenerative disc the difference is when it spreads like a disease to other disc's multiple disc's up to all of the disc's

Love your vids bud- your thumbnails are awsome im trying to make better ones on my channel- My DDD is rated 10% , my chief complaint Was pain down my shoulder blade into my arm -“ridiculopothy” VA never paid or mentioned the nerve disability. I’m now doing a video on my condition- the VA easily saved 100k by underrating my neck. Sad- but kudos to the buddy fcker who saved the VA some money by being a complete POS. 👍 he has a wall full of COA’s I’m sure!! Let me know if you think my thumbnails are ok Craig - I can’t get views? But I haven’t posted videos because my neck ruptured in July and I’m now getting better from PT etc. 🤷🏼‍♂️ stand sit stand sit stand sit - hard to edit videos that way. Lol

How about this for nuts. A VA doctor used a WW1 field manual and a piece of string to measure the length of my legs. He had me hold the string on the inside of my thigh just below the Jewel box and that's how he measured me.🤔😳😁🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I can't make this up! Only the best for America's best!

@@CombatCraig I'm am serious! I just figured out that they owe me a lot of back pay and I just saw your video on it. Even though I got 100% unemployability rating in 2018, I only got one year of back pay. Can I still file for back pay? I didn't get PTSD then, I have been out since 1993 but wasn't diagnosed until 2013. I complained to the VA since discharge in 93. Any suggestions? Thank you.
